What would happen if you dropped a diamond into a pool of nitric acid?

Would a diamond dropped into nitric acid be effected at all? Also, is there any substance that can alter diamonds.

Answer
No, the acidic properties would not effect the C-C bonds in diamond.
Diamond is for most purposes chemically inert, as is other forms of pure carbon.

Diamonds can be effected by external forces such as pressure, temperature or physical damage but not chemicals like acid.
