So, can anyone tell me if upgrading #fedora16 to #fedora17 via #yum using #preupgrade actually works ok?

The #fedoraproject instructions  (here: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Upgrading_Fedora_using_yum#Fedora_16_-.3E_Fedora_17) suggest it's not recommended, although they seem applicable to the beta version.  #fedora  image
