@lxoliva @jxself so here's my current situation: in a few weeks I'll start giving workshops on freeing computers and androids. Supposing everyone came with freedom-compatible hardware, it'd be a no-brainer; just install a libre distro. But given ~80% of their laptops will not have libre drivers for all of their parts (mostly wireless cards), what would you do? I'm all for libre hardware, but it's not like we're going to buy wireless usb dongles so easily. What I would (personally) do is install Debian and activate non-free in case a non-free driver was critically needed, then encourage them to get their next laptop from somewhere like thinkpenguin.com. That is what I mean by "transition" from non-free software. What's your honest opinion about it? P.S. sorry for the long post ;)
