pip is not living up to my expectations. why can't i install from a local tarball?

vim has vastly better python plugins available (http://tr.im/HDuB, http://tr.im/HDuF, http://tr.im/HDuG ) but i don't like modal editing...

emacs has better syntax highlighting and indentation, plus can run integrated processes... but i don't like lisp all that much

i'm pretty sure i want to start using emacs or vim... but which? i like things about them both!
