@exador Nominally SMTP... but email isn't real time... so... kinda apples/oranges
-
@briantroy gotcha. thanks.
-
@exador23 The bus for email is a network of servers talking SMTP. The bus for real time will be a network of XMPP servers.
-
@exador23 Web clients, desktop clients, etc are a direct parallel. We're simply switching to real time plumbing.
-
@exador23 Twitter, FriendFeed, etc. will be to real time what AOL, Hotmail, Gmail are to email.
-
@kshep that's assuming Twitter doesn't become Ma Bell. Garden walls don't always fall of their own accord.
-
@briantroy "do you know something I don't" Almost certainly. ;-) I'm sure you know stuff I don't.
-
@exador23 Have their been any "walled gardens" in the (short) history of the internet that didn't eventually fall? Compuserve, AOL...?
-
@openallnight the bridge goes to the Hotel California. Your posts can check in, but they can never leave ;-)
-
@exador23 I read it a bit earlier. will have a response, but am suddenly inundated. tonight, later.
-
@kshep You are full of wisdom tonight.
-
@kshep yes. But I rarely am definitive when I predict the future...
-
@kshep yes - all walled gardens fall... even pre-interenet.
-
@kshep 10 years ago H.323 was the VoIP standard... all the telcom mfg's said so... the were adamant... and wrong.
-
@briantroy but sometimes the hungry peasants outside starve waiting for gravity to do it's work ;-)
-
@briantroy Cool. So in ten years you can say 'I told you so'. Meanwhile I'm going to help built the XMPP realtime bus.
-
@kshep Hah! I told you so.
-
@dwd that, in short, is the difference between semantic and Semantic folks ;)
-
@bear *sigh* You'll make me look this stuff up. And last time I read the proper UR[ILN] spec I didn't spot drinking for a week.
-
@exador23 you are missing my point... bleep the bus... create the applicaitons that drive value... the bus will come!!!
-
@bear "stop" drinking. Well. Maybe, anyway.
-
@dwd yea, don't go down that path, there be dragons
-
@kshep it isn't about I told you so... it is about being realistic about how/where in the value chain you focus your effort.
-
@briantroy Sure. It's all about resource allocation. I'm going to allocate mine on helping build out a real-time XMPP microcontent network.
-
@kshep what I'm saying is - do you want to be skype, or the person who worked on the ITEF for SIP? Your call. No wrong answer.
-
@briantroy I want to be a guy who builds stuff that works with other peoples stuff instead of talking about it all day. I'm failing. :-)
-
@bear Found the dragons. RFC 3305 section 2.2.
-
@briantroy no, I get it. I just love talking in metaphors & I'm not opposed to picking up a sledge from time to time. O team would b a big 1
-
@briantroy Skype is kind of a sad state. I think about all the things I *can't* do with it because it's too closed off. I don't want more of
-
@kshep I like that :) - have fun.
-
@exador23 I know... I wasn't hacking at you...
-
@dwd gah! thanks for the acid flashback!
-
@bear Hey... Man... Don't be a URL or a URN... Why can't we all be URIs?
-
@dwd dude, I think you just found the next cool t-shirt phrase
-
@bear Maybe I'll get some printed up for next FOSDEM.
-
@dwd I'm all over that if you do
-
@julien I'd like to, of course, but I'm going to have a hard time getting away from work. :/
-
@dustin agree, don't want more of... but I'll take the valuation and the user base any day. Don't underestimate what they did - drive market
-
@briantroy Sure, it's good if you're *them*. I like building stuff. They don't let me. I'm not a businessman, (I'm a business, man).
-
@julien would love to - today got kidnapped by the boss
-
@dustin but that is what they did kaaza, skype, joost... they built stuff... didn't wait around for the standard or someone to give access..
-
@briantroy u can say the same thing about microsoft re: userbase & driving the market. Would be nice to avoid another behemoth like them.
-
@exador23 I didn't say abandon principle... I said build it... create value. That is what MS did at first... (ok, the stole some of it)...
-
@briantroy Just saying you brought up skype as an example. Not sure what the topic is, but I don't want to build a proprietary system.
-
@dustin skype built skype before SIP was ready. Proprietary was a choice. But they didn't propose standard... they created user value.
-
@briantroy Our ideas of user value are clearly vastly different. The web as a single-vendor solution does what you're describing, not what I
