    rms' parallel licensing stance is quite simple. mysql making prop available is no diff if they did with MIT license. #fossmy

      @harishpillay http://bit.ly/4gLfcf says MySQL must not be sold to ORCL if proprietary licensing not possible for all. Why does RMS say that?

      @harishpillay He seems to say that GPL is not sufficient to allow developers to earn a living

      @webmink not really. he has clarified that if you do GPL, and proprietary, it is no different from the end user POV it is no diff from MIT

      @harishpillay Pity that was all he said. It does not in any way explain the letter he sent to the EU.

      @webmink, I find it lamentable that you keep misrepresenting @rms' position over and over. Please start engaging in honest debate instead.

      @bkuhn I actually still don't understand the statement he sent, though. It's quite confusing, and probably the reason @webmink misrepresents

      @bkuhn The words in the KEI letter are clear. The acquisition must be blocked unless all are free to make money from a proprietary version.

      @bkuhn Why will you not face the fact that RMS has made a mistake?

      @ruiseabra Thats, RUI. I thought I understood RMS position until he sent that naive letter.

      @bkuhn Explain why the para starting "As only the original rights holder can sell" in http://keionline.org/ec-mysql does not mean this.

      @webmink I'm really sad Sun couldn't survive, but to be bought by Oracle... sorry, does not forebode well for my interests :|

      @ruiseabra Me too. But the alternative - that Oracle pulls out - is even worse. When Sun folds, anyone can buy MySQL without oversight...

    • Simon Phipps Simon Phipps Rui Seabra

      @ruiseabra I mean the copyright & trademark, not the company. Sun going bust would be a disaster for the FOSS movement.

      @webmink I think it's a loose-loose situation that could only be turned into a win-win or win-neutral by Oracle's destiny for MySQL.

      @webmink if MySQL was relicensed to "GPLv2 or later", (or "GPLv3 or later"), and a good trademark policy similar to Ubuntu would be better.

      @ruiseabra I agree with those, yes.

      @webmink, As I said: I don't agree w/ letter & wouldn't sign. But it doesn't say what you claim & isn't only statement of @rms' on subject.

    • Simon Phipps Simon Phipps Bradley M. Kuhn

      @bkuhn If it doesn't mean what I say, what does http://identi.ca/notice/12876973 mean? You accused, so correct.

      Sunday, 25-Oct-09 15:04:54 UTC
    • Simon Phipps Simon Phipps Bradley M. Kuhn

      @bkuhn Also, I don't claim it is only statement. It is however inconsistent, and will cost many people their jobs. It deserves explanation.

      @webmink indeed, he chose not to elaborate the letter. then again, to me, his explanation sounded reasonable. #fossmy

      @webmink,I read it to say:"Fastest/easiest way to lotsa $$$ is proprietary relicensing"; it can be true even if it's actually net.negative.
