Why did the replace Pidgin with Empathy in !Ubuntu #Karmic ? Seems like more of a downgrade than an upgrade to me.

@carpentr #Empany contains valuable vaporware features and lets the #NSA read your IMs. Epic win! !ubuntu #karmic

@carpentr 'cause they see benifits in using Empathy over Pidgin, and want to get it stable for the LTS.

    • techwizrd techwizrd GNOME

@carpentr: There was a lot of debate, but empathy is the default in !gnome now. I still prefer pidgin though.

@carpentr I feel much the same. If empathy got html support and did away with the way they do timestamps I'd be intruiged.

@techwizrd yeah, #epiphany is the default in #gnome, too.

@teddks: Btw, all passwords in pidgin are stored in plain text. So are the IM logs.

@teddks Vapourware features? Like... voice and video support?

      Saturday, 31-Oct-09 20:56:14 UTC
    • Ted Smith Ted Smith techwizrd

@techwizrd So they're as secure as my filesystem? Sounds... reasonable. Are IM logs sent over the network in #empathy?

      Saturday, 31-Oct-09 20:56:53 UTC
    • techwizrd techwizrd Ted Smith

@teddks: AFAIK, no. I don't know why they would be.

@marcusharrison !pidgin has voice and video. But #empathy was sold on the #telepathy framework. Guess what uses that?

@teddks @carpentr The telepathy framework is a better choice for the future of !gnome because of superior integration possibilities.

      Saturday, 31-Oct-09 20:59:00 UTC
    • Ted Smith Ted Smith techwizrd

@techwizrd Great, so I have no reason to have them encrypted by the program. What was your point?

      Saturday, 31-Oct-09 20:59:15 UTC
    • Ted Smith Ted Smith Ubuntu users , Mirsal Ennaime

@mirsal That is what I meant by vaporware. I don't care about possibility, I care about reality. !ubuntu

@teddks Is there something particularly wrong with the telepathy framework?

      Saturday, 31-Oct-09 21:01:34 UTC
    • techwizrd techwizrd Ted Smith

@teddks: You don't want all of your conversations readable by anyone (gf/spouse, government, lawyers, friend).

      Saturday, 31-Oct-09 21:01:39 UTC
    • Ted Smith Ted Smith techwizrd

@techwizrd Yes, which is why I have an encrypted filesystem. But it's useless to have that if the IM's are sent in the clear on the net.

@teddks And the whole KDE 4 thing showed us the benifits of better infastructure in the short- AND long-term, I do think.

@teddks Pidgin DIDN'T have voice and video (or even plans for them) when we decided on Empathy in May.

@marcusharrison There's no reason to have an unused infrastructure in a non-rolling distribution.

@maco I find it hard to believe that !pidgin got voice and video from scratch in a matter of months... really?

@teddks I do care about better design. This is not vaporware, the rest of !ubuntu doesn't use it yet. And there is still a pidgin package

@mirsal The argument I'm making is that the switch !ubuntu made is a massive lose for privacy, equal to dropping !gnupg from the system.

      @teddks they've said since 2.0 "someday..." but hadn't set a timeframe

      Saturday, 31-Oct-09 21:09:38 UTC
    • Mirsal Ennaime Mirsal Ennaime Ted Smith

@teddks There is no loss, pidgin is still here It is not wiped out your system when you upgrade and it's an apt-get away from a base install

@mirsal Strong !crypto for #IM is orders of magnitude farther away for the new user. It's a massive !privacy loss. !ubuntu #karmic #empathy

      @jorge ? "Ask Mark" + "Leadership Workshop"? I don't see how that's relevant.

@teddks Then improve it. You got the code. Go make a patch and send it in.
