@akfoerster, I don't like public shaming of violators, but Rafael did a excellent job after that point. He deserves credit for that part.

Thx @harishpillay. M$ re-uses GPLv2 code without respecting the GPL? @bkuhn, your take? http://ur1.ca/fc0b
-
@jwildeboer, I replied on the blog: ur1.ca/fdrf Short version: GPL enforcer would need more details & work directly w/ copyright holders.
-
@bkuhn thx. Let's wait. Just wanted to make sure it goes the right direction ...
-
This situation led me to blog some suggestions on how to deal with #GPL violations: http://ur1.ca/fe6k I hope that the post is useful.

@akfoerster, As @bignose said #GPL violations are special cases of #copyright infringements, which are common. We simply must be vigilant.
-
Wow, I'm mentioned on Ars Technica 2x in as many days: ur1.ca/fiwr ur1.ca/fisf Also, ebb.org got slashdotted & survived: ur1.ca/fiwu phew!
-
@bkuhn @kaz Surprised there was no mention of CC-0 on 0x1a; maybe open data licenses like http://ur1.ca/fkhc on a future show?
-
@bkuhn whats the point of open source if you have to enforce rules on people who use your open code?
-
@bkuhn isn't the point that the code is open?
-
@mypetbean, no, point of software freedom is users & developers have rights to copy, share, modify and redistribute both for profit and not.
-
@mypetbean Wait. Open Source has a point? When did this happen? http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/open-source-misses-the-point.html
-
@bkuhn Got me again. For a while I thought C&CS was a new first-person shooter strategy game. Love your work; wind down however you like.
-
@bkuhn Pardon my ignorance, but what's C&CS?
-
@saintaardvark, C&CS is #GPL enforcement shorthand for "complete and corresponding source code". It's what GPL requires you give w/ binaries

@freemjd whoa there zealot
-
@mypetbean Thanks. You know you're wasting your breath if nobody's calling you a zealot.
-
Congratulations to Rafael Rivera for his #GPL compliance work w/ #Microsoft. C&CS for WUDT is now available. Good work! http://ur1.ca/hhw0

@bkuhn I don't get the BSD license fans' enthusiasm for the license. Their argument seems to clearly reduce to public domain; why a license?
-
@bkuhn I can kind of see, although "proprietary" casts too wide a net; surely there are viral or semi-viral closed licenses (ie FOSS not ok)
-
@trelane BSD ~= PD + Don't Sue Me Bro + Give Me Credit
-
@bkuhn 'cept it's not really copyleft, it's more like copy-left-the-defenses-down, or rather copy-wrong-oponent ;-)
-
@awalton Give me credit is a restirction on the redistribution; the point of BSD is to increase redist. I also dont' see "don't sue" there
-
@bkuhn BSD peeps will always have sth against Free Software. Its OK IMHO.
-
@jwildeboer: no, I don't have anything against free software. I just can't use GPL software in mine, that's all.
-
@jwildeboer: OTOH some GNU developers are in a rage against BSD software and try to rewrite everything under GPL, which I can't understand.
-
@jwildeboer GPL folks always look down their noses at BSD folks too, of course. It's a fundamental software freedom narrative...
-
@bkuhn or more precise: the schism between BSD and GPL is not resolvable. So both sides should respect eachother.
-
@bkuhn Thanks for the follow-up article. I found a typo near the end: "as well GPL enforcement geeks" s/well/we/
-
@ott: that's what Goodness invented the word «some» for.
-
@ott: You should redo the maths on the GPL-violations project and the boost of VxWorks.
-
@ott: and migrate to VxWorks for the next version.
-
@trelane "don't sue me": the big capslock section. Give credit: "Don't remove this license" "Must reproduce this notice" Copyright Info
-
@ott: neither is Windows CE an appropriate substitution nor am I a majority. I know what stuff to buy, but the ex-violator is still happy.
-
@ott: you need to understand the perception of these companies that they got sued for using GPL software, which is what reaches management.
-
@ott: the difference is that NetBSD users use NetBSD standards
-
@ott: also, we have to stop this identichat, my train is arriving
-
@ott: they don't need to, they use our code so they use whatever protocols we use.
-
@ott: the GPLv3 brings software patents into the equation, regardless if you acknowledge them or not, the license does it for you.
-
@ott: in others it means that software patents make your software unpublishable despite the fact that you don't even have software patents
