Xmas package came in. Pulled the trigger on a refurb !Thinkpad X301 to replace my dying Dell. Should be here Wednesday.
-
@fabsh congrats. The Lenovos are good working horses. You will have fun.
-
@jwildeboer Thanks, man. It's a bit ugly, but I need a laptop to last 2+ years, really...
-
@fabsh I got an x200 last week (used, slightly) and it is an amazing thing. totally amazing.
-
@fabsh but will it be installed and running by showtime tonight?
-
@fabsh agreed. They are not pretty. But they work. I started with an X31, an X41, a T61p and am now on a X200. All still work.
-
@tychoish Cool. I was alternating between an X200s and the X301. In the end I went with the 301...
-
@yareckon The Lenovo? No. It arrives in a few days...
-
@jwildeboer Impressive!
-
@fabsh Congrats on the new laptop!! One thing I always here about the thinkpads is that they last well :)
-
@fabsh at Red Hat the Lenovos are quite the standard. Lenovo cares about compatibility and certification.
-
@fabsh I've been amazingly impressed with lenovo hardware. and quality
-
@dantheman Thanks! That was the main factor for buying one. That and the Linux support.
-
@jwildeboer Yeah, I heard @bkuhn loves them as well. That's why I considered them.
-
@tychoish Nice to hear so much good about my choice. :)
-
@fabsh How much did it set you back?
-
@tante Around 900 Euros with student rebates. It's not cheap, but if it lasts, it'll be worth it.
-
@fabsh They have supported Linux really well for a long time. I'm still pissed they removed that 13.3" model which looked sweet
-
@fabsh wonderful, now I can't even read to the end of a dent without my attention wandering... sorry
-
@fabsh must.. read.. to.. end.. of.. dents.. sorry
-
@dantheman The X301 is 13.3" but it is pricey. All SSD though, which is fantastic for the road!
-
@fabsh nice! Does the !Thinkpad X301 play nicely with !linux?
-
@yareckon NP I know the feeling! ;)
-
@mohanpram Should. May need proprietary wifi drivers, we'll see...
-
@fabsh nope - itel chips, open drivers.
-
@fabsh intel chips sorry.
-
@jwildeboer Yay! :D
-
@fabsh I had a only Thinkpad a21m, I cant speak for drivers or anything, but the machine lasted for nigh 10 years. They're tough
-
@bkuhn Well, technically, refurbished mean used, right? ;)
-
@fabsh, I guess refurbs are "used", but I'm talking about used ones from ebay. I still use T4x models & probably will for another year.
-
@bkuhn I am not comfortable with buying computers from eBay...
-
@fabsh eBay is so '95 ;-)
-
@fabsh, I have had good luck with it. I go with sellers with very high feedback & reflash BIOS when they arrive.
-
@jwildeboer Yes and a scam minefield these days...
-
@bkuhn Yeah, well... I can't risk that ATM. I'm happy with the deal I've got as well... :)
-
@bkuhn Thanks for hint about reflashing BIOS. Had not thought about that.
-
@bkuhn I personally really enjoy !sflc show, I have learned a lot about Free software and the different kinds of freedom. Keep it up!

-
@mohanpram what? podcasting naked? ;)
-
@fabsh now your talking...hey wait! No, no podcasting naked, only free as in nude! ;)
-
@bkuhn How do you reflash a BIOS with free software?
-
@mohanpram ;)
-
@sobotka the act of flashing
-
@bkuhn Flashing a !BIOS with !freesoftware on !linux is is possible with !flashrom. Many supported boards. Laptops are difficult, though.
