  1. Gordon Sinclair Gordon Sinclair GNU's Not Unix

it's debates like this that remind me the only people actually who care about this are the !gnu people, usually reignited by the GNU people

    • theuser theuser GNU's Not Unix , Linux

@thistleweb currently you reignite it !gnu !linux

      Wednesday, 06-Jan-10 16:29:35 UTC
    • Alexandre Oliva Alexandre Oliva GNU's Not Unix

@thistleweb that's an incorrect assessment. many more people care about denying !GNU the fair recognition it deserves

      Wednesday, 06-Jan-10 16:30:29 UTC
    • Gordon Sinclair Gordon Sinclair theuser

@theuser lol, yeah, like it's not been going on for hours already. It's easy to reignite something already in full flow huh? The work's done

    • Gordon Sinclair Gordon Sinclair Alexandre Oliva

@lxoliva if it makes you happy, so be it

      Wednesday, 06-Jan-10 16:37:15 UTC
    • Alexandre Oliva Alexandre Oliva

@thistleweb it doesn't. I'm sad at how many people will fight for those who take undue credit and against those being wronged

      Wednesday, 06-Jan-10 16:40:13 UTC
    • Gordon Sinclair Gordon Sinclair Alexandre Oliva

@lxoliva My point is the name "Linux" has stuck, any attempts to try and force people to change their use of it will be seen as whiney

      Wednesday, 06-Jan-10 16:46:45 UTC
    • Alexandre Oliva Alexandre Oliva

@thistleweb Linux is the name of a kernel. “Linux kernel“ means the kernel named Linux, not the kernel of the system named Linux.

    • Alexandre Oliva Alexandre Oliva

@thistleweb but some people want to pretend gnu is not as relevant as it is

      Wednesday, 06-Jan-10 16:49:05 UTC
    • Gordon Sinclair Gordon Sinclair Alexandre Oliva

@lxoliva You're not telling me anything I didn't know a few years back, it changes nothing. The name has still stuck.

      Wednesday, 06-Jan-10 16:51:45 UTC
    • Gordon Sinclair Gordon Sinclair Alexandre Oliva

@lxoliva "pretending it's not as important" is different from "not caring about the name and wanting to use and improve the OS"

      Wednesday, 06-Jan-10 16:52:30 UTC
    • Alexandre Oliva Alexandre Oliva

@thistleweb yeah, I'm also sad about the number of people who will just sit back and do nothing while others are wronged

      Wednesday, 06-Jan-10 16:53:04 UTC
    • Alexandre Oliva Alexandre Oliva

@thistleweb there are those who don't care about the name. those don't take part in these debates, and don't fight for either side

      Wednesday, 06-Jan-10 16:53:58 UTC
    • Gordon Sinclair Gordon Sinclair GNU's Not Unix , Linux , Alexandre Oliva

@lxoliva which brings us back to the debate between the !gnu peeps who do care, and the !linux peeps who just want to get on with things

      Wednesday, 06-Jan-10 16:56:50 UTC
    • Alexandre Oliva Alexandre Oliva

@thistleweb and the linux folks who want to pretend they did the majority of the work, and that the community formed around linux alone...

@thistleweb and the linux folks who want to pretend they did the majority of the work

      Wednesday, 06-Jan-10 17:00:37 UTC
    • Alexandre Oliva Alexandre Oliva

@thistleweb and that the community formed around linux alone, rather than around the combination of linux and gnu

      Wednesday, 06-Jan-10 17:00:39 UTC
    • Alexandre Oliva Alexandre Oliva GNU's Not Unix

@thistleweb how could it? linux never worked by itself! Linus said it needed !gnu to do anything useful

      Wednesday, 06-Jan-10 17:00:40 UTC
    • mwgamera mwgamera GNU's Not Unix

@thistleweb Those who don't care could just do a favor to those who do and put !GNU before !linux since they do use it anyway.

      Wednesday, 06-Jan-10 17:02:27 UTC
    • Alexandre Oliva Alexandre Oliva mwgamera

@thistleweb @mwgamera if everyone who cared about the name wanted it the same way, we'd quickly reach an agreement

      Wednesday, 06-Jan-10 17:03:45 UTC
    • Alexandre Oliva Alexandre Oliva GNU's Not Unix , mwgamera

@thistleweb @mwgamera but many *claim* not to care, but fight to death *for* the wrong they're doing to !gnu

      Wednesday, 06-Jan-10 17:06:32 UTC
    • Gordon Sinclair Gordon Sinclair GNU's Not Unix , mwgamera

@mwgamera interesting logic, not caring about a name should require extra effort to make sure the name is !gnu approved lol

      Wednesday, 06-Jan-10 17:07:16 UTC
    • Alexandre Oliva Alexandre Oliva

@thistleweb not caring means not caring, going happily either way, not opposing vehemently and coming up with excuses to have it your way

      Wednesday, 06-Jan-10 17:09:00 UTC
    • mwgamera mwgamera GNU's Not Unix

@thistleweb Are 3 keystrokes really that much effort to ask in return for awesome system like !gnu?

      Wednesday, 06-Jan-10 17:11:18 UTC
    • Gordon Sinclair Gordon Sinclair Alexandre Oliva

@lxoliva ya know, if adding GNU to the start didn't make it sound more of a tongue twister, it might work

      Wednesday, 06-Jan-10 17:12:41 UTC
    • Gordon Sinclair Gordon Sinclair

@thistleweb it also don't help being told by "freedom" crusaders that we're NOT free to use "linux" that we must use "gnu/linux"

      Wednesday, 06-Jan-10 17:12:50 UTC
    • Arne Babenhauserheide Arne Babenhauserheide mwgamera

@mwgamera That's a point - @thistleweb do you mean "don't care" or "don't want to think about implications, philosophy and politics"?

      Wednesday, 06-Jan-10 17:13:27 UTC
    • mwgamera mwgamera

@thistleweb What's wrong with that logic? If you don't care then why insist on using a other name than those who made it wish you to use?

      Wednesday, 06-Jan-10 17:16:18 UTC
    • Gordon Sinclair Gordon Sinclair Arne Babenhauserheide

@arnebab I mean "don't care". Not everyone who use FOSS do so for the cause of free software. Plenty of people see a PC as just a PC

      Wednesday, 06-Jan-10 17:16:40 UTC
    • Gordon Sinclair Gordon Sinclair Arne Babenhauserheide

@arnebab There's plenty of people who advocate GPL software because they understand it's value, they're already converted to the idea

      Wednesday, 06-Jan-10 17:18:44 UTC
    • Gordon Sinclair Gordon Sinclair mwgamera

@mwgamera the logic is, they use a shorter, snappier name that's stuck and see no reason to change it as they don't care about the name

      Wednesday, 06-Jan-10 17:21:13 UTC
    • Arne Babenhauserheide Arne Babenhauserheide

@thistleweb For me, using "GNU/Linux" is a way to keep the philosophy in it: Linux was started for fun, GNU was started for freedom

      Wednesday, 06-Jan-10 17:27:27 UTC
    • Gordon Sinclair Gordon Sinclair Arne Babenhauserheide

@arnebab Good for you, I've no probs with people calling it GNU/Linux, I do have a prob with people forcing that choice down other's throats

      Wednesday, 06-Jan-10 17:31:50 UTC
    • Alexandre Oliva Alexandre Oliva

@thistleweb see?, this is the kind of lame excuse that people come up with... look at your identi.ca nick for an actual tongue twister ;-)

      Wednesday, 06-Jan-10 17:33:27 UTC
    • Arne Babenhauserheide Arne Babenhauserheide

@thistleweb you're free to use the any name you want -> http://identi.ca/notice/18324094

@lxoliva being a Scot, with the national flower of Scotland being a thistle, I see where you're coming from, I often see non Scots struggle
