it's debates like this that remind me the only people actually who care about this are the !gnu people, usually reignited by the GNU people
-
@thistleweb currently you reignite it !gnu !linux
-
@thistleweb that's an incorrect assessment. many more people care about denying !GNU the fair recognition it deserves
-
@theuser lol, yeah, like it's not been going on for hours already. It's easy to reignite something already in full flow huh? The work's done
-
@lxoliva if it makes you happy, so be it
-
@thistleweb it doesn't. I'm sad at how many people will fight for those who take undue credit and against those being wronged
-
@lxoliva My point is the name "Linux" has stuck, any attempts to try and force people to change their use of it will be seen as whiney
-
@thistleweb Linux is the name of a kernel. “Linux kernel“ means the kernel named Linux, not the kernel of the system named Linux.
-
@thistleweb but some people want to pretend gnu is not as relevant as it is
-
@lxoliva You're not telling me anything I didn't know a few years back, it changes nothing. The name has still stuck.
-
@lxoliva "pretending it's not as important" is different from "not caring about the name and wanting to use and improve the OS"
-
@thistleweb yeah, I'm also sad about the number of people who will just sit back and do nothing while others are wronged
-
@thistleweb there are those who don't care about the name. those don't take part in these debates, and don't fight for either side
-
@thistleweb and the linux folks who want to pretend they did the majority of the work, and that the community formed around linux alone...
-
@thistleweb and the linux folks who want to pretend they did the majority of the work
-
@thistleweb and that the community formed around linux alone, rather than around the combination of linux and gnu
-
@thistleweb how could it? linux never worked by itself! Linus said it needed !gnu to do anything useful
-
@thistleweb Those who don't care could just do a favor to those who do and put !GNU before !linux since they do use it anyway.
-
@thistleweb @mwgamera if everyone who cared about the name wanted it the same way, we'd quickly reach an agreement
-
@thistleweb @mwgamera but many *claim* not to care, but fight to death *for* the wrong they're doing to !gnu
-
@thistleweb not caring means not caring, going happily either way, not opposing vehemently and coming up with excuses to have it your way
-
@thistleweb Are 3 keystrokes really that much effort to ask in return for awesome system like !gnu?
-
@lxoliva ya know, if adding GNU to the start didn't make it sound more of a tongue twister, it might work
-
@thistleweb it also don't help being told by "freedom" crusaders that we're NOT free to use "linux" that we must use "gnu/linux"
-
@mwgamera That's a point - @thistleweb do you mean "don't care" or "don't want to think about implications, philosophy and politics"?
-
@thistleweb What's wrong with that logic? If you don't care then why insist on using a other name than those who made it wish you to use?
-
@arnebab I mean "don't care". Not everyone who use FOSS do so for the cause of free software. Plenty of people see a PC as just a PC
-
@arnebab There's plenty of people who advocate GPL software because they understand it's value, they're already converted to the idea
-
@mwgamera the logic is, they use a shorter, snappier name that's stuck and see no reason to change it as they don't care about the name
-
@thistleweb For me, using "GNU/Linux" is a way to keep the philosophy in it: Linux was started for fun, GNU was started for freedom
-
@arnebab Good for you, I've no probs with people calling it GNU/Linux, I do have a prob with people forcing that choice down other's throats
-
@thistleweb see?, this is the kind of lame excuse that people come up with... look at your identi.ca nick for an actual tongue twister ;-)
-
@thistleweb you're free to use the any name you want -> http://identi.ca/notice/18324094

@lxoliva being a Scot, with the national flower of Scotland being a thistle, I see where you're coming from, I often see non Scots struggle
