    are there any plans to increase !identica's 140-character limit? bug #208 has been open for 19 months now

      @luma !identica We'd like to reflect community consensus on "best" limit, but not sure how. !statusnet now supports variable limits.

      @luma What I’d rather see is dropping the need for URL shorteners by making URLs not count towards message length (and displaying short).

      @luma I often see on !identica 1 post distributed on 2 dents, so I think 300 chars should be a good limit

      @666 I'd go w 280 to allow backwards compatibility. Of course, to the best of my knowledge identica & twitter are the only #140 holdouts

      @exador23 perhaps an option so people who want 140 chars twitter compatibility can choose between that or a nicer ~300

      @666 that's easily achieved with a counter that changes color at #140 (which #brainbird has) and/or short url link. I'm more concerned with

      @666 ...compatibility with anyone who's somehow using SMS. (#140 totally sucks - no need for 2 posts for one reply)

      @evan @luma my money would be on 140 chars for 'original' posts, but much higher (280?420?) for responses/conversations.

      @666 I really don't think 140 chars is enough. 250 or 300 would be much better. H8 tlking lik a illiter8 teen to mke wrd limit.

      @ddevine @exador23 Both of you: Perfectly clear! :D BTW it looks like there's some agreement about a ~300 chars limit on !identica

      @evan If I lived in Cali, I'd put a beer on 140.

      @exador23 why not go with 3 x 140 instead of 2 x 140? Doesn't everybody love 420?
