I've used yum, apt-get and pacman. I find pacman's utility and package format MUCH easier, faster and more flexible (AUR + ABS ftw) !linux

@darwinsurvivor Think you'd be willing to make a quick/not-so-quick writeup on pacman? http://bit.ly/dxfUeQ

@eightyeight No, he uses lenses to focus the sun onto rock, making a quaint storage medium.

@bioselement I don't know any more than is already very well explained on the wiki.

@bioselement I guess the only thing I'd add is that w/ AUR + ABS, it pretty much blows PPA out of the water.

@dandart: aren't the rocks trademarked by mother nature?

@eightyeight He won't use CDs because they're trademarked by Philips and/or Sony. He won't use an x86 for sure!

@robconnolly He makes them himself from scratch from ovens and sand, and it helps him see his code.

@dandart: are using cds from #sony or #philips takes away your freedom how...?

@dandart I'm not sure @rms is against trademarks. Trademarks are for consumer protection mainly.

@robconnolly Yes. I don't know many that are, copyrights indeed protect freedom, but BDs are bad in his eyes, afaik.

@robconnolly Blu-ray discs? Sorry, I forgot this term wasn't in common usage until about 2012-13

      Wednesday, 27-Jan-10 01:42:31 UTC
    • Dan Dart Dan Dart

@darwinsurvivor I love pacman and arch.

      Wednesday, 27-Jan-10 01:43:47 UTC
    • Rob Connolly Rob Connolly Dan Dart

@dandart I don't think there's anything inherently bad about the blu-ray technology, it's probably just that most are drmed to hell.

      Wednesday, 27-Jan-10 01:48:23 UTC
    • Dan Dart Dan Dart Rob Connolly

@robconnolly it's mainly the implementation and video "content management" rather than the actual disc.

      @dandart: it's a #mecard encoded using #qrcode. just my contact info really

@eightyeight interesting. so anyone with a phone with a camera and the tech can add you quickly and easily! clever things those.

      Wednesday, 27-Jan-10 01:58:26 UTC
    • Aaron Toponce Aaron Toponce Dan Dart

@dandart: yeah. i made personal cards with only the #qrcode. seeing what the response will be when i start handing them out

@dandart yeah, well we all know that stuff sucks! @rms isn't the only one who has a problem with it.

      Wednesday, 27-Jan-10 02:01:11 UTC
    • Dan Dart Dan Dart Rob Connolly

@robconnolly bad stuff! I like to keep free when I can - but I won't go out of my way for it if I really need the non free e.g. flash

      Wednesday, 27-Jan-10 02:02:41 UTC
    • Dan Dart Dan Dart Rob Connolly

@robconnolly though I hate flash! and java, for some reason.

      Wednesday, 27-Jan-10 02:03:08 UTC
    • Dan Dart Dan Dart Aaron Toponce

@eightyeight not really familiar with that sort of stuff, so I wouldn't know the implications!

      Wednesday, 27-Jan-10 02:06:07 UTC
    • Rob Connolly Rob Connolly Dan Dart

@dandart yeah I really wish I didn't need flash. java isn't so bad, I have to use it for work, I'd rather use python or C/C++ though!

      Wednesday, 27-Jan-10 02:06:25 UTC
    • Rob Connolly Rob Connolly Dan Dart

@dandart the most annoying thing about java is the lack of operator overloading!

      Wednesday, 27-Jan-10 02:07:14 UTC
    • Dan Dart Dan Dart Rob Connolly

@robconnolly I just think it's slow! and I don't like VMs for programs (eg java, c#), I just love PHP!

      Wednesday, 27-Jan-10 02:15:45 UTC
    • Rob Connolly Rob Connolly Dan Dart

@dandart yeah it is slow. Technically all interpreted languages use a VM of some kind. I prefer Python over PHP - PHP get's too messy!

      Wednesday, 27-Jan-10 02:20:56 UTC
    • Dan Dart Dan Dart Rob Connolly

@robconnolly Of course Python doesn't LET you mess it up! Hey, I want SOME freedom... heh.

      Wednesday, 27-Jan-10 02:41:48 UTC
    • Rob Connolly Rob Connolly Dan Dart

@dandart well python doesn't let you mix mark up and code, because it wasn't designed primarily as a web language. In py: 'import freedom'

      Wednesday, 27-Jan-10 02:50:53 UTC
    • Dan Dart Dan Dart Rob Connolly

@robconnolly Yes, PHP is nice cos I can just stick it in wherever I want! Dammit. import bacon

      Wednesday, 27-Jan-10 02:59:08 UTC
    • Rob Connolly Rob Connolly Jono Bacon , Dan Dart

@dandart I know where most people should stick it, but I won't say! Shouldn't that be: import @jonobacon!

      Wednesday, 27-Jan-10 03:00:39 UTC
    • Dan Dart Dan Dart Rob Connolly

      @robconnolly import export sourceforge?

      @dandart ???

@darwinsurvivor no package manager I've used beats portage IMO - though it can be a wee but slow at times... !Linux

      Wednesday, 27-Jan-10 08:17:32 UTC
    • Robin Green Robin Green Graham Cox

@sazzer tried #paludis? It's portage improved and rewritten in C++, and it has a distro based around it (!exherbo, derived from Gentoo)

      Wednesday, 27-Jan-10 08:29:16 UTC
    • Graham Cox Graham Cox Robin Green

@greenrd I've heard it mentioned, but not tried it yet... Isn't it only a rewrite of emerge, the frontend to portage?

      Wednesday, 27-Jan-10 09:45:49 UTC
    • Doug Penner Doug Penner Linux , Graham Cox

@sazzer actually, pacman is very similar to portage, except that packages are binary (unless you use ABS, which allows editing flags) !linux

      Wednesday, 27-Jan-10 09:50:22 UTC
    • William Chambers William Chambers

@darwinsurvivor Turns out the bug was with phpBB....a bug they've known since '05. So I've moved over to Drupal http://colonylinux.com/forum
