Planning a poll to decide the max # of chars on !identica. Candidates: <140, 140, 280, 512, 1024, no limit, other. Sound right?
- Patricia F Anderson, Aric Gardner and László Torma and 4 others like this.
-
@evan So can you help me at all ???
-
!identica I was tempted to add 141 but I figured that was unnecessarily frivolous.
-
@rapichat right now? What do you want? Are your notice postings timing out?
-
@evan Yes they have been doing that and just take I think too long. I need help with doing the upgrade with the the Database not working
-
@evan The 140 limit is for SMS (user+message), right? In that case why not 300, 460, ...,? since the user only needs to appear once
-
@rxp Are you saying to add 300 and 460 to the limit options?
-
@evan basically, yeah
-
@evan Those are good choices, but I think 1024 is effectively "no limit" where it concerns m-blogging. I would cap the choices at 512.
-
@evan I agree with @frankenspock although even 512 maybe too high? What will it do to timelines? And I like having to keep it short :-)
-
@stav @davidmarsden I think his question was about options for the poll, not to have an actual debate on the merits.
-
@davidmarsden we use 1024 for our internal company site, and it's pretty reasonable. You can get about a paragraph in there.
-
@frankenspock I'm also not sure if the powers-of-2 thing is too nerdy. Maybe just 500, 1000?
-
@evan I was gonna mention that, but I figured you were having fun with the joke. Yes, it's totally nerdy! What about status.net isn't, btw?
-
@frankenspock that's right. I figure we can have that debate soon.
-
@evan much more than 140 will start wrapping lines on psi.
-
@evan 140 for no reason whatsoever apparently. ( @frankenspock are you happy now?)
-
@stav He meant that I'm not polling right now, just trying to figure out what options to have when we add the poll to the status.net blog.
-
@evan that's what worries me. If I wanted to read paragraphs I'd go read a book or a blog. My attention span is reducing with every dent ;-)

@stav I'm never happy when I'm being misunderstood.
-
@evan I think 140, 250, 500, 1000. > 1k is not micro.
-
@macno 512 is not µ already. I would loose track and span of it. happens all the time in !jaiku
-
@evan I would never blog again if I could microblog at 1024 chars. It'd be hell on my facebook status, tho.
Evan Prodromou and Daniel Kinzler like this. -
@bugabundo I'll vote for the option around 200/250
-
@macno I like the limit of 300 in !BB. and even that can be small at times. but 2x300 is enough of anything. more, use IR http://ur1.ca/l1dt
-
@evan glad to hear >140 isn't off the table. here's a statistical analysis of sentence length if you're interested :) http://ur1.ca/l1g3
Deb Scott likes this. -
@bugabundo I like truncation idea. 280 & 1140 would work well here, as it's easy to tell from count what part of dent won't be truncated.
-
@evan Not that it should be a standard, but Facebook allows 420 chars == 3 x 140 char SMS messages, the maximum many handsets will allow.
-
@jamestait That's a good data point! Also, I was unaware that there was a limit at Facebook, which probably means it's a good limit.
-
@exador23 Whatever it takes to get you back.
-
@bugabundo is there a limit on Jaiku?
-
@evan The Online Investment Firm is http://GeniusFunds.com I have been with them for 6 Months they been around more then 3 years.
-
@evan This company NEEDS a Micro Blogger Set up their site was OFFLINE for more then 12 HOURS I think and I have about $5,000 on there...
-
@evan Now think about how Damn Nervious all the other thousands or so Investors were no communication at all they need help
-
@evan :S #140 is exactly right for a #MICROblogging service I guess majority will rule... Hurray for #democracy (side note: keep rocking)
-
@evan I sent the Support@Geniusfunds.com Team a very detailed Email to either join my site or start up a site w/ Statusnet microblog
-
@ron1n I will! just for you.
-
@evan Ok here you go Proof of the Problem I am having with posting!!!! http://ur1.ca/l1p2
-
@evan Would it be possible to try the candidates first (1 week each, say) to see how they affect writing, reading, clients, Twitter bridge?
-
@120new that sounds like a recipe for madness. "oh sorry, new fella; the unlimited C thing was for one week only. Now you can have 64."
-
@frankenspock @bananabob That's so cute: hi-tie-tie! Miramar sounds like a perfume.
-
@frankenspock Is there anybody here who isn't mad already? I think a poll without more information would be a vote based on prejudices.
-
@frankenspock But yes, you make a good point there. New users might be baffled. Maybe test notices could all have a different colour.
-
@120new I just mean it might confuse and anger newcomers so much that they wouldn't want to stick it out.
-
@120new: or on the sign up page 'You don't have to be mad to dent here, but it helps' with 'I agree' checkbox.
-
@davidmarsden Didn't you see that on sign-up? Are you mad, man? I saw that. I'm sure I saw that.
-
@frankenspock And there'd be existing users who wouldn't want to test it, too. I'd just prefer some sort of preview before deciding.
-
@120new: I have a hard time remembering anything since I don't know when.
-
@120new you can give brainbird a test spin for 300, and facebook a test spin for 420.
-
@exador23 Yes, but there's no way I'll try Facebook, and I don't like the idea of starting an account at Brainbird just to abandon it later.
-
@exador23 ... Unless starting an account and then abandoning it is pretty normal behaviour. Is it? If that's the case, maybe I will try BB.
-
@120new without signing up, http://brainbird.net/group/q gives a feel for what a heavy load of longer posts is like. (not http://ur1.ca/l1u4
-
@davidmarsden Aren't you like a CEO or something? You could probably win an award if you're good at forgetting everything.
-
@120new some kind of beta/test site would be nice, but I dunno how hard that would be for SN to set up.
-
@120new FYI, from !denticator, your average dent is 115 characters.
-
@exador23 Excellent! Yes, that's the sort of thing that would be helpful to see. Thanks!
-
@frankenspock Yes. If temporary changes are a nightmare, it wouldn't be worth the trouble.
-
@stav Thanks! I'm happy with 140, but haven't tried anything else.
-
@davidmarsden And the less they need to know, too. Yay for managers! (Seriously, I think they do a really tough job, akin to herding cats.)
-
@120new good. that's part of why I've been feeding it plenty of longer posts. I'd agree the 1st one is too ambitious for http://ur1.ca/l1ve
-
@stav what do you mean by "fill the screen"?
-
@exador23 Good on you for testing it. It's good to see what it can do.
-
@stav True. Subbing is still going to be voluntary, whatever the limit. But I suspect we'll all become less concise if offered more chars.
-
@ragnarokangel In my personal timeline, each !140 takes 3 lines (2 for dent & 1 for date/place/source stamp). About 4-5 dents fill my screen
-
@ragnarokangel .... and it takes even fewer dents to fill the screen on my !android.
-
@stav Oh. I can usually see 9-10 in the web interface... Though xmpp improves readability greatly imho
-
@ragnarokangel Don't you get an identi.ca logo and text entry box at the top of your web interface? If I scroll down, I see 8-9 dents.
-
@stav I have a 1920x1080 monitor -- it may help out with that...
-
@120new Miramar means something like seaview
-
@ragnarokangel If dents get to be 3,4,5 or 6X the current length, all of the conversational qualities of μ-blogging go out the window
-
@bananabob "Miramar" has a warm sound to it, and if it actually has a seaview - mmmarvellous. I was thinking of a perfume, Shalimar.
-
@120new miramar has the airport, the cook strait cable end, the sewage treatment plant, used to have gasworks now has peter jackson's studio
-
@stav I've been using brainbird for a good while now (though not exclusively) -- my average post is still about 90 charac http://ur1.ca/l1z0
-
@bananabob All the good stuff, then. Go, Miramar! (It's enough that it's Kiwi. You can't improve on 100% pure.)
-
@120new actually Miramar is beautiful close to the city lots of flat land a bonus in Wellington and plenty of sea - it used to be an island
-
@120new Miramar in photos http://www.flickr.com/groups/miramar_wellington_nz/pool/
-
@bananabob Miramar! It looks beautiful. Moody pic from Point Halswell: http://ur1.ca/l1zv
-
@120new Are you looking at places in Florida?
-
@120new Nope, I spoke too soon. I should have clicked the link first. Why are all these place names the same in Florida and New Zealand?
-
@bananabob Oh, look! "Massey Memorial, Miramar, Wellington New Zealand" by some bananabob character: http://ur1.ca/l20a
-
@ragnarokangel I don't know Florida, but there do seem to be lots of placenames used over and over. Settlers trying to recall their origins?
-
@ragnarokangel @jacob's right, it works for writer docs and not the place
-
@ragnarokangel Sorry, I realise your question was probably rhetorical. I was just musing. Out loud. In print. Ah, well.
-
@x11r5 What about beer?
-
@120new ooo that is a good one init
-
@120new /me takes a bow
-
@ronnoc Apparently learning that ellison does not always about what to have that beer
-
@evan You could let users choose(via profile settings) whether to have 140/280/512.Anything more counts as excess noise.
-
@bananabob /me applauds, but still doesn't quite understand the use of "/me". 120new prefers to speak in the 3rd person. /me bows out
-
@bananabob Oh, but hang on, I was forgetting the point: Great photo! Wellington is really close to the water. I hadn't realised.
-
@stav I don't buy your slippery-slope argument. A limit of 200 chars would actually improve the flow of conversation, because sometimes...
Michele Ann Jenkins and Hippy Steve like this. -
@120new '/me/ is IRC speak. It gets translated to 'andyc leaves the building.' I blame @michaeltwofish myself.
-
ie 140 dumbs down conversation, but I'm cool w 256 or 280 (& 420 always works for me ;) >420 pushes readability. its ok, but i wouldn't sub.
-
@exador23 if you're beyond 420, you should be communing with a tree instead of the internet ;)
joshix likes this. -
@rapichat I see that you have site support ?s. Direct requests to @evan are not the best way to get site support. Try: http://ur1.ca/l3br
-
@evan I say we use Commonwealth spelling for places ending in a vowel and American Spelling for places ending in consonant and vote about Y.
Evan Prodromou likes this. -
@evan I like the way 140 forces me to edit for brevity.
Michael C. Harris likes this. -
@abhitux no. We have a site-wide limit. Individuals can limit themselves however they want.
-
@evan Also, frankly, I like the way 140 forces some conversations to other fora.
Michael C. Harris likes this. -
@majnoona heh. Let's stop in a shack in Apalachicola to discuss.
Michele Ann Jenkins likes this. -
@evan I don't agree the distinction is artificial. Also it makes 'reply detection' unneeded. Lacking space, so let's discuss next week?
Evan Prodromou likes this. -
@banjor I reserve the right to come back with an "I told you so" when you are at the bottom of that slippery slope ;-)
-
@ragnarokangel Just so you know, I _never, never, ever_ follow a link to the end of a BB dent over !140. Your dent was clear without it ;-)
-
@evan any limit, but don't count urls, hashtags, groups etc to the limit !identica
-
@andyc Someone (probably you) explained that to me ages ago. But are dents going through IRC, or are users just slow to adjust their habits?
-
@andyc I'm happy to blame @michaeltwofish too, for everything, especially if he won't see this.
-
@120new The latter.
-
@joshix Oh, poor things. Life is tough, all these changes happening so quickly.
-
@120new the /me comes from IRC where it would "translate" into the action. so /me bows would read as bananabob bows.
-
@120new Wellington is a port city - with one of the best and most beautiful harbours in the world
-
@bananabob But you're not in IRC here, as far as I know, and it takes fewer characters to say "I bow" instead of "/me bows". /me curtsies
-
@bananabob It looks beautiful. I've only seen Wellington from a moving car (family trip when young); we saw the beehive Parliament building.
-
@bananabob It sounds like I'm being a pain in the arse, telling you what to do. And that's true. But don't listen. /me is a fine artefact.
-
@bananabob ... Err, I meant "/me" is a fine artefact. /me is a just barely reasonable one.
-
@120new mmm yes but old habits die hard
-
@120new oh gosh /me is confused about /me now
-
@120new It is beautiful - I love this city #Wellington !nz
-
@120new Whatever makes you think I wouldn't see this?! I might have withdrawn a bit later, but I'm not in a coma ;)
-
@michaeltwofish How do we know you're not in a coma? Blink twice if you can hear this.
Michael C. Harris likes this. -
@evan I'm a fan of 140
-
@evan 140. It maintains compatibility with #SMS and #Twitter and also keeps messages concise so they're easy to scan through.
ebouillon likes this. -
@davidmarsden Meh, you should look at what some people are doing with the WordPress P2 theme. Looks like microblogging, but unlimited chars.
-
@tyll not an option right now with StatusNet. We can set the character limit, period.
-
Evan Prodromou likes this.
-
@mcastel that's not an option right now.
-
@evan thanks. But this means that you do not like that model, or because of technical issue (if I can ask) ?
-
@mcastel we just don't support it in the software right now.
-
@evan ok, thanks
-
@jimh Nope, never. What were you doing when you got this?
-
@support I tried to post similar text to http://identi.ca/notice/20858241 from xmpp at approx 14:07:30 UTC and got that response
-
@jimh Oh wow, you got that via XMPP? Weird. I'll see if anything weird was going on at that time.
-
@support yep, I got that message back via xmpp, maybe it thought I was being boring :-)
-
@jimh I didn't realize we had the 'Ignore Boring Posts' plugin enabled. This explains everything.
-
@jimh no. What are you getting that from?
-
@evan I got that from trying to post something via xmpp
