So, #Black_Duck has announced a patent on what I've done regularly since 1999: ur1.ca/lbps I'm disgusted, insulted, and sick to my stomach.

@bkuhn I guess that proves that the patent system is totally broken (not that we needed more proof)
-
@realitas,both #Google & #Black_Duck refuse to publish their methods for identifying licenses on code,so we can't trust unverifiable results
-
@realitas,only if ppl say "I searched google ∴ I now have definitive taxonomy". Code searches are pitched as giving definitive license info.
-
@bkuhn Actually, the base principle of a patent is to disclose the "invention" in exchange of exclusivity. If not then it's even more broken
-
@mmuman, like many patents granted by USPTO, "invention" disclosed in this case is obvious & generally practiced prior to application.
-
@bignose,re:"look how bad a patent is". No one still thinks that particular emperor has clothes on, thus usefulness of such gawking limited.
-
@bignose, Long term, cost of software patenting must impact wealthiest for actual change. USA lobbyist system too broken for other solutions
-
@bkuhn Like many software patents it is obvious because built on existing knowledge.
-
@bkuhn Well, it's got to hurt them more than it hurts us. They're always willing to pay a price to raise the barrier of entry to competitors
-
@bkuhn Legislators are captive of patent lobbyists, courts are captive of patentees, and the executive is captive of patent applicants
-
@bkuhn This gives me an excuse to post my favourite patent related cartoon, which I use often in presentations: http://is.gd/7WjjB
