Honest climate change question: Why isn't "have fewer babies" at the top of everyone's list as a long term solution?

@blizzard Because having babies is a contest! The one with the most wins!

@blizzard Got to continually increase the pool of consumers in rich countries and cheap labour in poor countries.

@blizzard there's no socially acceptable rationalization for it. http://ur1.ca/1d7z is a very comprehensive take

@blizzard Heaven know what might happen to the economy if we stopped making growth our no.1 priority. We'd be in a recession or something.

@blizzard: that's my solution, but my wife doesn't agree.

@blizzard large popl != large climate change impact. US has highest absolute and per-capita CO2 emissions but a fraction the popl. of India

    • Daniel Berrange Daniel Berrange

@blizzard the timeframe we're faced with requires stablization of CO2 by 2020, and 80-90% cut by 2050. "fewer babies" can't achieve this.

@berrange Not alone, but it certainly has to be part of the picture.

@blizzard developed countries throw away a horrifically high percentage (30-50%) of all food produced for their needs http://ur1.ca/1dlb

      Wednesday, 04-Feb-09 12:04:08 UTC
    • Daniel Berrange Daniel Berrange

@blizzard as long as there is such a level of flagrant food wastage, I find it hard to consider population control as a relevant priority

      Wednesday, 04-Feb-09 12:05:29 UTC
    • Christopher Blizzard Christopher Blizzard Daniel Berrange

@berrange It's not just about food, it's about energy impact as well. Food is only one consideration.

      Wednesday, 04-Feb-09 12:15:47 UTC
    • Daniel Berrange Daniel Berrange

@blizzard very true, but population control can't reduce impact of energy in the timeframe required to prevent serious climate change

      Wednesday, 04-Feb-09 12:22:39 UTC
    • Christopher Blizzard Christopher Blizzard Daniel Berrange

@berrange Any particular item by itself isn't enough to reduce the impact, but together they can make a difference.

@berrange We're certainly talking about the 20-40 year time horizon here, but that's still within scope in my mind.
