Seems the average limit people want on !identica is 242 characters. Suppose that's sensible enough. (Not counting more, infinite or other)

@fabsh You're right, it'd be a shame to confuse matters. We've always got TweetLong or whatever. :D
-
@fabsh Good for you, sticking to principles. Large is what brainbird is/was for. I had my own for a while but it got lonely...
-
@exador23 Hey, alright then. We have tonnes of services though.
-
@exador23 Can't read full context, but Aie! Expect a more elaborate answer later
-
@dandart sure. just wanted to squelch that common belief. deepspawn runs the instance on his own, for his own reasons, & http://ur1.ca/lx1h
-
@120new if too many ppl move to #BB I bet @deepspawn will have trouble with server load. its already on its limits, and i http://ur1.ca/lyyk
-
@bugabundo ... they'll move to Brainbird if the limit on Identica doesn't change. But maybe that's not going to be possible or desirable.
-
@120new ahah you got hit by the #140charlimit! ROFL. well there are several other servers around. ppl can move anywhere t http://ur1.ca/lz0p
-
@bugabundo Argh, you're scaring me! Imagine if you were posting 4000-character notices every time! There'd be no space left in the universe.
-
@120new ahahah TOLD YOU SO.... and long long ago! 140 is too little to chat... maybe enough to Post Status. but HOW MANY http://ur1.ca/lz1n
-
@bugabundo ;) Gee, I need a longer limit here.
-
@bugabundo Let's see what happens. Seems like the vote was pretty even, for and against the 140. It'll probably be interesting either way.
-
@bugabundo I bet it's a hard decision, yes. But maybe they all are :D I hate even deciding what to eat; deciding a char-limit would kill me.
-
@120new 55% to 45%. Even? 10% more people favor a bigger limit than don't. I don't think that's an insignificant majority.
-
@greggish I can't see the result (without voting again). I'm just going on what I saw in a notice about it.
-
@120new eating is easy: anything. #charlimit I decided long ago: >140 :D #300charlimit is nice and enough for me.
-
@greggish What bothers me (after you said the total was 980?) is that so few people voted. What's wrong with everybody else? Useless gits!
-
@120new ohh and don't tell @marjoleink or she will refuse to follow us, if we post more then 140chars.
-
@bugabundo Okay. Shhh! Just keep quiet now and @marjoleink will never know...
-
@greggish Correction: 22% more favor a bigger limit than don't. I'm not that great with math.
-
@120new this is why I went after a site on status.net... Now if only omb and realtime would work
-
@alphakamp What do you think of it so far? Was it easy to set up?
-
@120new only setup required on my end is and email :) but at this point I can't judge it because its omb queue is dead in the water...
-
@120new I can set my char limit though :)
-
@alphakamp So you're going for 50,000? ;) I hope the OMB thing gets fixed soon. If it only takes an email to set up, that's excellent.
-
@alphakamp One of the best things about having your own instance: you're User No. 1. It makes you look so supreme :D
-
@120new :) either 300 or 280
-
@bavatar haven't been able to get out since I got it
-
@bavatar My replies aren't appearing in @alphakamp's account, either: http://alphakamp.status.net/replies The last notice was 13 hours ago.
-
@120new mmh - intresting ;) I mean, I've no clue but it's intresting
-
@bavatar :D This is MORE interesting: just realised I replied to his Identica dents, but mine didn't go there either: http://ur1.ca/lz6b
-
@alphakamp Can you set a limit on the notices imported from elsewhere too? Could you choose to only read the first 140 chars, say?
-
@bavatar right
-
@120new As @bugabundo said the major problem would be server load for me, and for the users the experimental nature and t http://ur1.ca/lzbp
-
@120new It's not that hard, the current bottle neck is IO and RAM. If a large number of users where to move here, it woul http://ur1.ca/lzc2
-
@bugabundo It's not up to me to make a decision. It's a community decision. Does it seem to you that this community has made a decision?
-
@evan If you make the decision, you'll get the blame. If you don't make the decision, you'll get the blame. *shrug* ;)
-
@evan now and ever identica is YOUR project, even if meant of US.
-
@bugabundo also, are you part of the Identica community?
Shashi Gowda likes this. -
@evan for long I was, IMO, an important part of #Identica. I'm now part of a larger #Statusnet server Network. My Voice i http://ur1.ca/m02v
-
@evan for me the Important part of all this Discussion is Choice, and I have it (thanks to FLOSS). what ever you do, do i http://ur1.ca/m036
-
@evan does http://bit.ly/dy5ozY mean that !status.net could be somehow connected biderctionally with buzz?
-
@mcepl that's a definite goal.
-
@bugabundo I think it's great for the community to have access to outsiders' experience and opinions.
-
@deepspawn I thought you might be quietly wishing all the new users would go away and leave you in peace to experiment more easily. But...
-
@snapl Re: char-poll sample size: The whole point of the poll was to find out what most people wanted. Everyone could vote and should have.
-
@bugabundo that's not the kind of community I'm interested in.
-
@evan That's true. You're only interested in the kind of community where you can paint your head like Spock and no one tells you not to.
Shashi Gowda likes this. -
@120new [[Polls are evil]]
-
@greggish 45% to 55% is a generous read. Another way to say it is that 140c is more than twice as popular as any other option.
-
@alphakamp did you report this to service@status.net? That's what good beta users do...
-
@evan So maybe try it again with only two possible categories? "140 or less" or "more than 140"? Because I think your read is incorrect.
-
@evan I think @frankenspock has a point with the readings here.
-
@evan Or maybe there's some kind of compromise out there. Seems like a pretty divisive issue.
-
@frankenspock It's how the poll was framed. One of the problems with polls. We can go back to it, but I don't want to be eternally polling.
-
@evan So you're saying the issue is shelved? I mean, just say that, if that's where we're at.
-
@ragnarokangel danke.
-
@evan It would be a lot better if you guys just made a clear call on this instead of kept dangling possibilities in front of us forever.
joshix likes this. -
@stav Aha! That's more like it.
-
@frankenspock I'm inclined to do this, worried about continuing to poll until we get the result I want.
-
@evan Understood.
-
@evan Not a generous read at all. Poll was framed badly. Repeat with top 2 choices, 140 vs 280 & I predict you will see the same 45% vs 55%.
-
@greggish I could believe that.
-
@evan Off-topic. This big conversation reminded me of a feature I suggested. Make convs subscribable. Any consideration given to this idea?
-
@amgine Can't tell if you're joking. Would you have done it differently? I think polls are good. No commitment needed, just a show of hands.
-
@stav Good point! Nobody objects because they'd be free to write more, they just don't want to be forced to read more.
-
@greggish It's possible, not a priority right now. Obviously really hard to do in a general setting. Won't happen in 0.9.0.
-
@evan changing the length will raise issues with redenting to twitter bridge, wouldn't it?
-
@jwildeboer no, we'd just truncate and add a link if it's >140.
-
@120new To be less-mediawiki-centric, http://ur1.ca/m3er. I have other essays/discussions if you need more.
-
@120new Sorry. I do not know the answer to that question.
-
@120new Unfortunately you may have read a portion of the Polls Are Evil page, but you didn't understand word...
-
@stav But if you were a REAL cult leader, you'd pretend to know the answer to EVERY question! I'm going to have a crisis of fake-faith now.
-
@120new I have been exposed as a fake cult leader. Just like all the other cult leaders, I'm afraid.
-
@evan Just a few "active" members having their say is not a "community decision".
-
@evan personally, I want to KEEP the 140chars limit - that's what works for me. I don't even bother to read longer posts
-
@bugabundo I already did long ago, by not following anyone on BB except @deepspan himself - even 300chars is too much for my taste
-
@stav quite. not only do I not *want* to read more than 140, I don't do it. and I don't read truncated dents, or follow their links
-
@marjoleink that's what we're doing for now. If you'd like to make sure that you always have 140c limit, sign up at 140.status.net or...

@evan You just delivered an argument for >140 ;-)

@marjoleink I am willing to click on a link for a photo or video, but I won't follow a link to the remainder of an over !140 dent.

@exador23 This is 1st well-reasoned argument I've seen. There's nothing magical about !140. I posit there is need for a sane limit. !kudos
