#Canonical: Pulling #FaiF services in favor of non-free ones since 2010 (or earlier?) !Ubuntu !autonomous !freesoftware #failure

@teddks Can you please explain this post with a link? What's happening with #ubuntu ?

@teddks so #canonical is just starting their own OpenID provider which is not Launchpad? And the beef is that the code to it isn't open?

      Tuesday, 16-Feb-10 20:49:29 UTC
    • Ted Smith Ted Smith Colin Dean

@colindean Not only is the serverside non-free, they're replacing a free network service with a non-free one. That's more worrying.

      Tuesday, 16-Feb-10 21:07:07 UTC
    • Colin Dean Colin Dean

@teddks you mean closed source non-free, right? It's sooooo confusing sometimes. OTOH there are tons of OpenID providers which are(n't) open

      Tuesday, 16-Feb-10 21:11:37 UTC
    • Colin Dean Colin Dean

@teddks was launchpad terrible because it was non-free before the source was available?

      Tuesday, 16-Feb-10 21:19:56 UTC
    • Ted Smith Ted Smith Colin Dean

@colindean I don't use "free" to mean zero cost. And yes, there are lots, but Launchpad was free - this is a step backwards.

@colindean: !Ubuntu floss users expect Canonical to take the high road and free the code. They getting more like Apple and co by the day

      Tuesday, 16-Feb-10 21:24:26 UTC
    • Ted Smith Ted Smith Colin Dean

@colindean Yes, that was a bad thing, but it would be much worse if #Canonical had taken a free service and made it proprietary.

@habtool the debate is free for free sake or free for the users sake, I think canonical subscribes to the second and not the first

      Tuesday, 16-Feb-10 21:26:36 UTC
    • micahg micahg habtool

@habtool like someone else said (maybe you) and old debate, I don't really want to rehash...

@micahg: I am not fighting with you ;) Just highlighting when Canonical locks the code up

      Tuesday, 16-Feb-10 21:33:15 UTC
    • habtool habtool micahg

@micahg: Canonical standing of the shoulders of Giants (debian etc) and pissing down on them by closing code that hides in the cloud

    • Colin Dean Colin Dean habtool

@habtool @teddks I see. Perhaps they are planning to release the code, but need to clean it up? Do they have a duty to release clean code?

      Tuesday, 16-Feb-10 21:35:56 UTC
    • micahg micahg habtool

@habtool I know :) but the thing is, FOSS software means people can do what they want with it (license permitting)

      Tuesday, 16-Feb-10 21:38:21 UTC
    • habtool habtool Colin Dean

@colindean: Many eyes make the code shallow and easy to clean. Mark and Co are just not showing respect for the FLOSS movement. They score 0

      Tuesday, 16-Feb-10 21:38:50 UTC
    • micahg micahg habtool

@habtool why not focus on the good that canonical does for upstreams like Debian, Gnome, KDE

      Tuesday, 16-Feb-10 21:40:32 UTC
    • habtool habtool micahg

@micahg: Agreed, but when Canonical lock up code, then no one can build on it, so its so against all the work done by the whole FLOSS setup

@teddks That post reads like they're switching *to* openid. am I missing something?

      Tuesday, 16-Feb-10 21:43:52 UTC
    • habtool habtool Ubuntu users , micahg

@micahg: They do do good of course, but locking up code in the cloud is wrong for a FLOSS setup, and if they must don't call it !Ubuntu

@rxp "replaced with" should mean A is going away in favor of B... so yes.

      Tuesday, 16-Feb-10 21:46:50 UTC
    • Ted Smith Ted Smith Colin Dean

@colindean I very much doubt that. They're just not releasing the source because they've "lost their way" or whatever.

      Tuesday, 16-Feb-10 21:47:12 UTC
    • micahg micahg habtool

@habtool well, look at LP, it was open sourced after 4 years...maybe these other things will be too

      Tuesday, 16-Feb-10 21:48:04 UTC
    • habtool habtool micahg

@micahg: Its mainly the principle. Its like someone sinning during the week but will repent of Sunday :)

      Tuesday, 16-Feb-10 21:48:07 UTC
    • micahg micahg habtool

@habtool right, but it all depends on what you consider a sin, isn't it?

@teddks Heh, I meant the blog post. Mainly, the "Ubuntu single sign on is built on OpenID" bit. are they replacing another OID service, or ?

      Tuesday, 16-Feb-10 21:51:05 UTC
    • Ed Fonseca Ed Fonseca Ravi Pinjala

@rxp looks like a single OID service for Ubuntu forums, Launchpad, Ubunto One, etc.

      Tuesday, 16-Feb-10 21:53:20 UTC
    • habtool habtool micahg

      @micahg: Agreed

      Tuesday, 16-Feb-10 22:01:39 UTC
    • Ted Smith Ted Smith Ravi Pinjala

@rxp Launchpad runs an OID service now, and it's free software. They're replacing it with "!ubuntu SSO", which is non-free software.

      Tuesday, 16-Feb-10 22:17:04 UTC
    • Ravi Pinjala Ravi Pinjala

@teddks Oh! didn't know about launchpad already using OpenID. That's a shame, yeah. :(

@teddks That's wrong. But is it dangerous?
