#Canonical: Pulling #FaiF services in favor of non-free ones since 2010 (or earlier?) !Ubuntu !autonomous !freesoftware #failure
-
@teddks link?
-
♻ @teddks http://blog.canonical.com/?p=330 #Launchpad #OpenID is being replaced with non-free Ubuntu-branded SSO service !softwarelibre
-
@colindean Not only is the serverside non-free, they're replacing a free network service with a non-free one. That's more worrying.
-
@teddks you mean closed source non-free, right? It's sooooo confusing sometimes. OTOH there are tons of OpenID providers which are(n't) open
-
@teddks was launchpad terrible because it was non-free before the source was available?
-
@colindean I don't use "free" to mean zero cost. And yes, there are lots, but Launchpad was free - this is a step backwards.
-
@habtool the debate is free for free sake or free for the users sake, I think canonical subscribes to the second and not the first
-
@habtool like someone else said (maybe you) and old debate, I don't really want to rehash...
-
@micahg: I am not fighting with you ;) Just highlighting when Canonical locks the code up
-
@micahg: Canonical standing of the shoulders of Giants (debian etc) and pissing down on them by closing code that hides in the cloud
-
@habtool I know :) but the thing is, FOSS software means people can do what they want with it (license permitting)
-
@colindean: Many eyes make the code shallow and easy to clean. Mark and Co are just not showing respect for the FLOSS movement. They score 0
-
@habtool why not focus on the good that canonical does for upstreams like Debian, Gnome, KDE
-
@micahg: Agreed, but when Canonical lock up code, then no one can build on it, so its so against all the work done by the whole FLOSS setup
-
@teddks That post reads like they're switching *to* openid. am I missing something?
-
@rxp "replaced with" should mean A is going away in favor of B... so yes.
-
@colindean I very much doubt that. They're just not releasing the source because they've "lost their way" or whatever.
-
@habtool well, look at LP, it was open sourced after 4 years...maybe these other things will be too
-
@micahg: Its mainly the principle. Its like someone sinning during the week but will repent of Sunday :)
-
@habtool right, but it all depends on what you consider a sin, isn't it?
-
@teddks Heh, I meant the blog post. Mainly, the "Ubuntu single sign on is built on OpenID" bit. are they replacing another OID service, or ?
-
@rxp looks like a single OID service for Ubuntu forums, Launchpad, Ubunto One, etc.
-
@micahg: Agreed
-
@teddks Oh! didn't know about launchpad already using OpenID. That's a shame, yeah. :(
-
@teddks That's wrong. But is it dangerous?
