Hypochondria is about the only thing you should treat with Homeopathy
- Felix Pleşoianu, David Haberthür (mov and David Marsden like this.
-
@reality: what makes you say that? Or is that a joke?
-
@davidmarsden because it consists of drinking expensive water?
-
@reality: ah, ok. I don't get it, though :-(
-
@rpcutts: eh?
-
@davidmarsden about the homeopathy? It was a joke :)
-
@reality: so you're talking about the placebo effect? And the quality of the therapist-patient relationship? Same with many medicines.
-
@davidmarsden People with Hypochondria make up illnesses that aren't there, and because Homeopathy is... Nothing... Nothing treats nothing!
-
@davidmarsden Uh, I was just making fun of the absurdity of Homeopathy but that works too :)
-
@reality: plus, I would say that hypochondriacs are expressing that something really is wrong. Just not what they say it is.
-
@davidmarsden Homeopathy, drugs diluted into oblivion. No more worth than a placebo sugar pill.
-
@davidmarsden you're reading into it too much :( now I feel bad for insulting hypochondriacs...
-
@davidmarsden but there are so many others, what about Peter Mandelson? I would like to punch him in the face...
-
@reality is what you make it. If you believe that it works then it probably will. If you don't then it probably won't.
-
@davidmarsden the placebo effect only goes so far. Plus I'm going to take the medicine with scientific grounding every time.
-
@rpcutts: Sorry, I thought you were still banging on about lack of pedestrianised access around Malta. Placebos can be very effective.
-
@reality: lots of placebos are more effective than "scientific" medicines. Big Pharma is not science-based, but money making machine.
-
@reality: And I'm going to take whatever works for me and makes me feel better.
-
@davidmarsden depends on how you're using the word placebo. i.e. No active ingredient?
-
@davidmarsden http://2tu.us/1iaq not as simple as what makes you feel better. lack of regulation and shunning real medication is dangerous
-
@reality: that's irrelevant. http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/feedarticle/8952349
-
@davidmarsden indeed, Edzard Ernst said it best.
-
"My plea is simply for honesty. Let people buy what they want, but tell them the truth about what they are buying."
-
"The argument that this information is not relevant or important for customers is quite simply ridiculous" - Edzard Ernst
-
@ciarang Sugar pills at least actually contain sugar.
-
"These treatments are biologically implausible and the clinical tests have shown they don't do anything at all in human beings."
-
@reality: also, do you know anything about the history of medicine? What once had 'scientific' grounding is now 'unscientific' e.g. lobotomy
-
@reality: I'm not advocating homeopathy. But I do think you should take scientific medicine with a pinch of salt (or a sugar pill), too.
-
@davidmarsden Yes, and all science is just theory placed to observation. I'm not saying that the placebo effect holds no water (ha) ...
-
@davidmarsden but there's only so far it can go. Plus as I previously mentioned there is a point at which this stuff gets dangerous
-
@davidmarsden and I agree that developed medicines from big pharma aren't always the answer, since it's money driven.
-
I mean, a spoonful of sugar.
