It still amazes me, but shouldn't, that employers tend to believe they have a right to control & dictate all aspects of an employee's life.

@bkuhn You just gotta not let them. Draw a line. If worse comes to worse, live like a hobo... ;)
-
@fabsh,yes,that has always been my plan. I've always had at least two career backup plans since 1996. Indeed, it's a reason I learned !poker

@bkuhn yep, including their relationships. we're almost living in a corporate-communist state.
-
@arc, That's an interesting turn of phrase. I tend to think "communism" as people-oriented. Don't you mean corporate-authoritarian?
-
@bkuhn But they don't want to pay for sick time, allow you to go to the doctor during work hours or offer enough vacation for mental health.
-
@bkuhn Indeed. But then that belief has not been shaken or tested too often.
-
@sankarshan, by "not shaken or tested often", do you mean that most people simply comply with all demands for fear of job loss?
-
@bkuhn corporations are made of people, and like communism, more and more become owned by the corporation and have little control over it.
-
@bkuhn Haha... Good one! My backup is stowing away to Australia and becoming a winemaker or pig farmer... :)
-
@bkuhn That and perhaps the perception, even if mistaken, that employers do indeed have that right.
-
@bkuhn That is sad, a lot of employers feel they also control you outside work. If it doesn't affect your job it's not their business IMO
-
@dantheman @fabsh, a lot of USA employers seem to want automatons who have no personality outside of pro-corporatism. I find this disgusting

@bkuhn Well, as I said: You just need to push back. They can't force you. They can apply pressure but that cuts both ways...
-
@fontana, if employers' only outside-of-work demand for employees is to use a bag w/ a corporate logo on it, I'd be annoyed, but not outraged
-
@dantheman,or worse:want certain action outside work. eg:Westinghouse, election day,we got memo finely worded by clearly said:Vote Republican

@bkuhn did you 'comply'?
-
@fabsh I think the UK and US have very different employment laws to Germany and France for example. Corporations are given too much power
-
@dread,no,I nearly always vote for 3rd party candidates anyway. Memo's point:Republicans fund DoD more & Westinghouse had many DoD contracts
-
@bkuhn Surely there's no way they could hope to enforce that?
-
@bkuhn "working" in the Free Software World is attractive because we develop relationships (w/true personalities) which transcend logos
-
@bma, it was smartly written as a guilt-trip. Theme was: "if you vote wrong, we might have lay-offs." I wish I'd saved a copy. This was 1996
-
@dantheman LOL!
-
@bkuhn at least you did not have the CEO of the Company *running* for President ;-)
-
@dantheman I there a song of yours you want us to play at the end of the interview?
-
@bkuhn they even force me to wear a red hat all the time! ;-)
-
@jwildeboer, at #scale8x @fontana & I were discussing that #Red_Hat issues a fedora when one goes to work there but wearing is optional.
-
@bkuhn @fontana @jwildeboer In fact, Max Spevack has had good success in talking by switching between a red fedora and Fedora ball cap
-
@bkuhn I am pretty sure that would be illegal in Germany. Certainly highly controversial...
-
@bkuhn I like the Fedora thing. I think it's very smart and motivating. Since it's optional, I think it's very cool.
