If I buy a laptop and don't want #Windows, I'm generally told I don't get a discount. No way of asking for a refund? !Linux
-
@chriswaterguy Support you choice all the way the only laptop without windows taxes, you can get at dell, not to much to choose from
-
@chriswaterguy you should be able to get a refund if you never agree to the EULA, never activate Windows, and are persistent.

@chriswaterguy goto http://www.frostbitesystems.com to get a laptop with pre-installed #linux
-
@chriswaterguy, depends on manufacturer. I really want someone to work on this issue, but can't get anyone I talk to interested in it.

@bkuhn What sort of work? I'm interested, and could take a small, defined task.
-
@gotunandan They're actually more expensive than buying a Toshiba & wiping Windows. Also, I'm in Australia.
-
@chriswaterguy in theory, if you don't accept the eula for windows you can get a refund. I found out that most retailers don't care though
-
@chriswaterguy it takes some work, but it is possible. http://bit.ly/a0zwR0

@chriswaterguy well, thats true, but at least you wouldnt be paying microsoft tax ;) and no worries about refund.
-
@chriswaterguy, issue needs leadership. A proper strategy would pressure hardware companies & most are afraid to do that.
-
@bkuhn What's the fear exactly?
-
@chriswaterguy, companies give $ to many ppl. Those ppl are afraid to upset the gravy train & oppose those company's policies on pre-install
-
@xxtjaxx Surely hey couldn't get way with voiding the warranty, unless there's a warning within the warranty against installing other OSes?
-
@bkuhn Most !Linux and !opensource users and developers don't get any money from companies though. They have no reason to keep quiet.
-
@chriswaterguy, Agreed. It calls out for an organizer. You should go for it! :) I would, but I have a bit too much already to do. :-/
-
@bkuhn ahem. http://identi.ca/notice/23304935 Work with Appropedia.org is more than enough for me.
-
@chriswaterguy,I am not sure what small tasks there are yet. IMO, 1st step is building a wiki that documents all attempts at refunds so far
