@arnebab what does "Anmerkung: CC-Lizenzen sind nicht frei, sondern nur offen." translate to? cc-licenses are not free?

@openuniverse Yes. It might be a bit too strong though. The correct term would be “cc licenses don't protect freedom but only availibility”

@arnebab that's not true either. some cc LICENSES protect data just as well as gpl protects software. creative commons itself does not.

@openuniverse I just cleaned up the wording on my page, too.

@arnebab so you're a staunch copyleft advocate. ok- but cc has sharealike. also, copyleft is a much bigger deal with software than data.

@openuniverse Copyleft and the GPL are huge with data. For the same reason that cc sharealike is.

      Wednesday, 03-Mar-10 08:42:33 UTC
    • Arne Babenhauserheide Arne Babenhauserheide 0u

@openuniverse But the cc sharealike has one severe drawback: it doesn't make sure that there's always an editable format available.

@arnebab license proliferation is the only problem with copylefting data. with software it's easy, just use gpl.

@arnebab i think the drawbacks of gpl for music, articles, and many data are worse than those for by sa

    • Arne Babenhauserheide Arne Babenhauserheide 0u

@openuniverse With anything which has a source it's the same: just use GPL. Only when sources are *much* larger than works it's impractical.

      Wednesday, 03-Mar-10 08:46:58 UTC
    • 0u 0u Arne Babenhauserheide

@arnebab there are other reasons when fsf says gpl is impractical, and fdl is better for books than gpl- that's why it was written.

    • Arne Babenhauserheide Arne Babenhauserheide 0u

@openuniverse That's true for GPLv2, but GPLv3 is generic enough that it can be used for anything which has a source.I use it for a free RPG

      Wednesday, 03-Mar-10 08:49:53 UTC
    • 0u 0u Arne Babenhauserheide

@arnebab gpl3 is generic enough that rms is going to start using it instead of cc and fdl? unlikely.

@openuniverse rms won't. He doesn't want people to change his writing. I disagree with him on that.
