@lh That's a really interesting article! Corporations who just "throw code over the wall" never seem to thrive...

@robmyers bias maybe, can't read jeremy allison article without interpreting it as "sun died because their 'open source' wasn't free enough"

@openuniverse It's indicative of deeper problems, but yes it's certainly lost Sun lots of momentum and mindshare.

@robmyers well it would be a shame if we didn't learn from this

Thanks to @lh for linking to @jra 's article about #Sun & #Oracle. It inspired me to post some musings about the issue: http://ur1.ca/o8a5

@bkuhn Would you expect Nokia to shepherd Qt into GNOME, Bradley?

@webmink, your question hinges on a belief that #OpenSolaris & #KDE are equal in their importance to FLOSS advancement. It's not even close.

@bkuhn No, I am highlighting your false assumption there was any reason for ZFS to be contributed to Linux by Sun.

@robmyers There's a fatal non-sequitur in both articles. Sun failed DESPITE the business success of FOSS at Sun...

@webmink, I agree it may not have been in Sun's interest to contribute #ZFS to #Linux. It was in the interest of the FLOSS community, though

@bkuhn ... in your view. No company acts purely in the interests of all commentators views of "the good of the FLOSS Community"

    • Simon Phipps Simon Phipps Bradley M. Kuhn

@bkuhn ... and which FLOSS community did you have in mind?

@webmink, !gnu/!linux is much more widely used than #OpenSolaris. G/L user community could've benefited from #ZFS. But we've got #btrfs now.

@bkuhn @webmink SUN however did allow Michael Tiemann to learn a lot about GPL and start Cygnus ;-)

@jwildeboer FWIW Michael Tiemann isn't keen to have people know about his internship at Sun :-)

@webmink its all history now, and AFAIR its in his book anyway.

@webmink,Not ignorant. I just don't put $$$ ahead of users' needs & FaiF. I realize for-profit business' owners require them to do just that

@bkuhn Piffle. You simply have a set of users whose needs you prefer over OpenSolaris users...

      @webmink,I don't believe #OpenSolaris needs'd be unmet if #ZFS worked natively on !linux. It'd even help cross-platform Solaris/Linux users.

@sankarshan, I presume uses FUSE to make #ZFS work on !linux ? Anyway, if native, there's license incompatibility. Moot anyway w/ #btrfs.
