@stav@identi.ca i would posit the problem is with the patent process itself. what was intended to spur … http://identi.ca/attachment/9934397
-
@exador23 I have yet to hear a good alternative from anti-patent gang how to protect inventors so they can get rewarded for their efforts.
-
@stav no patents are a fine alternative. apple didn't invent ANY of those things. their patents are like a spanish flag on american soil.
-
@exador23 I would favor laws to prevent corporations from commandeering their employees' patents. Only get right to nonexclusive license.
-
@stav anytime you introduce legislation where everyone is guilty, it's probably stupid laws. that's where we are, everyone infringes swpats
-
@openuniverse And "everyone" downloads copyrighted music and movies. Are you OK with that?
-
@stav What protects innovations on patented inventions? Reward comes from supplying demand. Monopoly over an innovation is not progressive.
-
@stav ABSOLUTELY. and you'd be crazy not to be.
-
@xidram For many inventions (agree not all) it is impossible for inventor to compete against low-cost manufacturers who simply copy.
-
@stav that's a red herring. I'm talking about pure Laissez-faire capitalism
-
@stav So what? If the competitor offers the same quality at lower cost, then the inventor should invest in innovation or marketing.
-
@stav imagine if bell labs and texas instruments has been blocked from semiconductor innovation by british researchers
-
@openuniverse Not sure which British researchers. Original Bell Labs patents had most claims rejected b/c Lilienfeld's transistor patent.
-
@stav bell labs deserved credit for their innovations, more than edison i would guess. and a lot of 'innovation' is parallel not linear
-
@openuniverse Reading Unjust Deserts. "Simultaneous invention", knowledge in a field reaches a point where next step is obvious & inevitable
-
@xidram @dread @openuniverse Sorry. Too many threads to follow/debate. I'll stick to position that patents are needed to protect inventors.
-
@greggish convergent evolution, in design form
-
@stav oh yes, protect them from staying relevant.
-
@stav *rolls eyes*
-
@stav That's fine. Believe whatever. Just don't be surprised when people disagree with you and try to clear your faith with reason. :-)
-
@xidram The better choice is A, b/c it's new, has better h/w and software. But, it costs $1000, when my budget is $500. B costs $500.
-
@xidram But, it costs $1000, when my budget is $500. B costs $500. The right (econ. sound) choice is B.
-
@dread Then A would be a better product in your eyes, but B would be the better choice. The choice is the selection; not the object.
-
@dread And on that note, all that matters is the selection; not the object. Suppliers don't make money off objects, but off sales.
-
@xidram I think we're arguing about different things
-
@xidram Thanks for attempting to shed light into deep deep dark recesses between my ears. Your cause, unfortunately, is utterly hopeless :-)
-
@dread I'm just saying that people may reasonably choose cheaper Chinese products because price is a major factor alongside quality.
-
@stav Yeah, I don't mind beliefs until govt. is lobbied to point the gun at me. I don't mind being an outcast as long as I can live my life.
-
@xidram I would agree with that. But I was originally talking about buying long-term, high quality goods.
-
@xidram other things equal, a higher quality & priced long term good is a better choice than an inferior long term good
-
@dread Intended term of use just another factor in consumer decision. All I'm saying is that these things are far more complex than binary.
-
@dread This is not always true. Quality: A = B * 2; B = C * 2; Price: A = B * 5; B = C * 2. The most cost effective buy would be B there.
-
@xidram which is just another reason to simplify the process by making it objective http://bit.ly/94oyaQ
-
@dread However, if the consumer doesn't mind spending all the extra money and demands highest quality possible, then A is the better buy.
-
@xidram I said B was the right choice. A was the better choice because it's a better good
-
@dread I think the conflict we're having is use of "choice". I'm using it as the selection. You're using it as the product being selected.
-
@xidram that may be it.
-
@xidram OK. One more shot: Patents are already the law of the land. It is the #unpatent forces that have to lobby to get guns #unpointed.
-
@stav unpointed?
-
@stav This is true. What I was referring to was lobbying for more legislation rather than repealing the legislation already in effect.
-
@stav also, appeal to authority
-
Careful, @stav. You're coming dangerously close to being in disagreement with the mob and getting Banished From the Island.
Hippy Steve likes this. -
@frankenspock Don't want that. I like this island. It has a lot of #free thinkers. Pretty smart ones, matter of fact.
