Ivanka Majic (Canonical Design Team Lead) responds to comments about button placement in #ubuntu #lucid http://bit.ly/dhi50w

Wednesday, 10-Mar-10 11:16:15 UTC from twirssi
    • Fabian Scherschel Fabian Scherschel

@popey He isn't saying anything, actually. He sure doesn't explain the reasoning well.

      Wednesday, 10-Mar-10 11:41:42 UTC
    • Alan Pope Alan Pope Fabian Scherschel

      @fabsh s/he/she. She's asking for feedback, which is a good thing :)

      Wednesday, 10-Mar-10 11:47:39 UTC
    • Fabian Scherschel Fabian Scherschel

@popey Sorry for the gender mixup. I have given some feedback now. :)

      Wednesday, 10-Mar-10 11:48:31 UTC
    • Alan Pope Alan Pope Fabian Scherschel

@fabsh Is the feedback "It's CRAP!" *honk* *honk* *honk* ? :)

      Wednesday, 10-Mar-10 11:52:11 UTC
    • Fabian Scherschel Fabian Scherschel

@popey No. It's "this change only makes sense if you move to the Mac global menu too and *that* would be crap."

      Wednesday, 10-Mar-10 11:53:01 UTC
    • Fabian Scherschel Fabian Scherschel

@popey But, essentially yes. Bad decision. Looks like a copycat move and feels like an Apple thing: do stupid things just to be diffrent.

      Wednesday, 10-Mar-10 11:53:49 UTC
    • Fabian Scherschel Fabian Scherschel

@popey Or was that differently? ;)

      Wednesday, 10-Mar-10 11:54:02 UTC
    • Alan Pope Alan Pope Fabian Scherschel

@fabsh I must be the only person alive who don't mind the OSX global menu. *shrug*

      Wednesday, 10-Mar-10 11:58:03 UTC
    • Fabian Scherschel Fabian Scherschel

@popey Many people like it. They mostly use Macs. I have no idea why... I used it on a 27" iMac recently. That was physically painful!

      Wednesday, 10-Mar-10 11:59:35 UTC
    • silner silner Fabian Scherschel

@popey @fabsh Isn't that the key? The global menu was designed for another time, of smaller screens, a time that may come back with netbooks

      Wednesday, 10-Mar-10 12:02:13 UTC
    • silner silner Fabian Scherschel

@popey @fabsh I'm puzzled as to why a menu change is so significant, but maybe that will become clearer when I'm using Lucid.

      Wednesday, 10-Mar-10 12:04:38 UTC
    • Alistair McKinlay Alistair McKinlay

@popey I like the idea of it. But I don't think it is the way to do it. I use gnome-globalmenu sometimes. But I hate it sometimes.

      Wednesday, 10-Mar-10 12:12:52 UTC
    • Brewster Malevich Brewster Malevich

@popey Thanks for the link! Love her blog. :-)

      Wednesday, 10-Mar-10 12:15:15 UTC
    • Matt Copperwaite Matt Copperwaite Alistair McKinlay

@yamanickill my £0.02: I like globalmenu it makes finding menu's so much easier because the bar is infinity large.

      Wednesday, 10-Mar-10 12:23:40 UTC
    • Brewster Malevich Brewster Malevich silner

@silner I've gotten more attached to the theme the more I've used it. (The orange frame highlight on focused is brilliant!)

      Wednesday, 10-Mar-10 12:24:08 UTC
    • Matt Copperwaite Matt Copperwaite Alistair McKinlay

@yamanickill but for the same reason an omnipresent bar at the top makes the close button much harder to find on maximised windows.

      Wednesday, 10-Mar-10 12:24:29 UTC
    • Brewster Malevich Brewster Malevich Fabian Scherschel

@fabsh It helps if you stop hitting yourself #rimshot :-D

      Wednesday, 10-Mar-10 12:24:49 UTC
    • Brewster Malevich Brewster Malevich Alistair McKinlay

@yamanickill Are we actually using the global menu? Maybe for the netbook remix only?

      Wednesday, 10-Mar-10 12:25:50 UTC
    • Fabian Scherschel Fabian Scherschel silner

@silner You are puzzled? Just think about how many times a day you use these buttons! There is a reason stuff like that isn't changed.

      Wednesday, 10-Mar-10 12:28:08 UTC
    • Fabian Scherschel Fabian Scherschel silner

@silner I mean car manufacturers don't go around swapping the side of the ignition or all the keys on the steering wheel. Ever.

      Wednesday, 10-Mar-10 12:28:48 UTC
    • Matt Copperwaite Matt Copperwaite Alistair McKinlay

@yamanickill which tends not to be a problem on a Mac because they're used with huge screens, so you tend not to maximize stuff.

      Wednesday, 10-Mar-10 12:28:56 UTC
    • Stuart Parkington Stuart Parkington Fabian Scherschel

@fabsh Unless you drive a Saab and the ignition is in the centre console! :) (though, I do agree with you about the buttons!)

      Wednesday, 10-Mar-10 12:30:14 UTC
    • Alistair McKinlay Alistair McKinlay Brewster Malevich

@brews I'm actually using it on my desktop. I put it on every so often and take it off and put it on again. I can't decide whether I like it

      Wednesday, 10-Mar-10 12:30:52 UTC
    • Fabian Scherschel Fabian Scherschel Matt Copperwaite

@yamatt The problem is that it takes ages to go to the menu on a 27" screen when the window you are using is at the bottom. It's bad design.

      Wednesday, 10-Mar-10 12:31:19 UTC
    • Alistair McKinlay Alistair McKinlay Matt Copperwaite

@yamatt Yeah. It does make it a bit weird, I just like the idea of not wasting space. I love maximising space. So I get rid of stuff.

      Wednesday, 10-Mar-10 12:31:39 UTC
    • Fabian Scherschel Fabian Scherschel Stuart Parkington

@narrf Renault did that too when they got rid of keys. They will keep it there for years now, though.

      Wednesday, 10-Mar-10 12:31:59 UTC
    • Jan Wildeboer Jan Wildeboer Fabian Scherschel

@fabsh keyboard shortcuts. Menus are for girlies anyway. Men use shells.

      Wednesday, 10-Mar-10 12:32:09 UTC
    • Alistair McKinlay Alistair McKinlay Fabian Scherschel

@fabsh Yeah, I agree. The idea is great. Only having 1 menu. But the design and implementation is rubbish...not sure how to fix it though.

      Wednesday, 10-Mar-10 12:32:10 UTC
    • Brewster Malevich Brewster Malevich Alistair McKinlay

@yamanickill: Well, they say that variety is the spice of life...

      Wednesday, 10-Mar-10 12:32:51 UTC
    • Alistair McKinlay Alistair McKinlay Brewster Malevich

@brews Really? Who says that??? :-P

      Wednesday, 10-Mar-10 12:34:10 UTC
    • silner silner Fabian Scherschel

@fabsh: Yeah, I suppose changing something you know is't the same as using something new. In the former you don't expect to have to relearn.

      Wednesday, 10-Mar-10 12:36:27 UTC
    • silner silner Fabian Scherschel

@fabsh: Well I have to admit, when I swapped a door around recently, I spent weeks trying to put the key through the window :)

      Wednesday, 10-Mar-10 12:37:51 UTC
    • silner silner Fabian Scherschel

@fabsh: But all that will have to wait till I resolve the Xorg, or maybe Plymouth, issue that's stopping me getting a desktop.

      Wednesday, 10-Mar-10 12:41:51 UTC
    • Fabian Scherschel Fabian Scherschel Jan Wildeboer

@jwildeboer Yeah. That's the right attitude for UI design people.... ;)

      Wednesday, 10-Mar-10 12:43:46 UTC
    • Alistair McKinlay Alistair McKinlay Fabian Scherschel

@fabsh It would be exciting if they did do that actually. Lets make a car with the pedals the wrong way round. Would be fun.

      Wednesday, 10-Mar-10 12:43:58 UTC
    • Fabian Scherschel Fabian Scherschel Alistair McKinlay

@yamanickill No. I am saying the idea is bonkers in the first place.

      Wednesday, 10-Mar-10 12:44:21 UTC
    • Alistair McKinlay Alistair McKinlay Jan Wildeboer

@jwildeboer So you are going on that feminism wiki soon then :-P can't remember what it is called.

      Wednesday, 10-Mar-10 12:44:46 UTC
    • Fabian Scherschel Fabian Scherschel Alistair McKinlay

@yamanickill Like the iPhone homescreen: You can use it. But it's not particularly USEABLE.

      Wednesday, 10-Mar-10 12:44:54 UTC
    • Fabian Scherschel Fabian Scherschel silner

@silner Changing something without a clearly defined benefit is stupid. And I feel this is what the Ubuntu design guys (and gals) did.

      Wednesday, 10-Mar-10 12:45:42 UTC
    • Fabian Scherschel Fabian Scherschel silner

@silner Either that or they suck at communicating why they did it. Which wouldn't be the first time either...

      Wednesday, 10-Mar-10 12:46:10 UTC
    • Stephanie Werner Stephanie Werner Jan Wildeboer

      @jwildeboer then stand your ground!!!

      Wednesday, 10-Mar-10 12:46:33 UTC
    • Fabian Scherschel Fabian Scherschel silner

@silner It's not only muscle memory. It's also that the change has no tangible benefits beyond "brand".

      Wednesday, 10-Mar-10 12:47:01 UTC
    • Alistair McKinlay Alistair McKinlay Fabian Scherschel

@fabsh Yeah, the iphone homescreen is just so horrible. Did you hear about their patent for "Contact on the homescreen".

      Wednesday, 10-Mar-10 12:47:30 UTC
    • Alistair McKinlay Alistair McKinlay Fabian Scherschel

@fabsh It's not often we agree on things :-P

      Wednesday, 10-Mar-10 12:47:43 UTC
    • Fabian Scherschel Fabian Scherschel Alistair McKinlay

@yamanickill Yep. Just in case of a car people would get killed. Which is why these people think about it more... ;)

      Wednesday, 10-Mar-10 12:48:31 UTC
    • Jeff Has Moved Jeff Has Moved Fabian Scherschel

@fabsh It's possible Ubuntu made the change just to get publicity. That's their style. I think it's more likely just bone-headedness.

      Wednesday, 10-Mar-10 12:48:58 UTC
    • Alistair McKinlay Alistair McKinlay Fabian Scherschel , Brewster Malevich

@fabsh Yeah, I know. Still exciting though. As @brews said "Variety is the spice of life".

      Wednesday, 10-Mar-10 12:49:32 UTC
    • Fabian Scherschel Fabian Scherschel Alistair McKinlay

@yamanickill Yeah. How about "patent on a system to move icons that doesn't suck", Steve? ;)

      Wednesday, 10-Mar-10 12:49:51 UTC
    • Fabian Scherschel Fabian Scherschel Alistair McKinlay

@yamanickill Meh. I rather have spice in my food.

      Wednesday, 10-Mar-10 12:50:07 UTC

@gomerx I think it's Mark. He seems fascinated with the Mac and now that he's concentrating on "the brand" instead of being CEO...

      Wednesday, 10-Mar-10 12:51:05 UTC
    • Brewster Malevich Brewster Malevich Fabian Scherschel

@fabsh: Aye, but there was no benefit to having it the original way (aside from it looking like Win XP).

      Wednesday, 10-Mar-10 12:52:40 UTC
    • Fabian Scherschel Fabian Scherschel Brewster Malevich

@brews The benefit is that it's a system that has proven to work on millions of computers for nearly two decades now!

      Wednesday, 10-Mar-10 13:00:51 UTC
    • Fabian Scherschel Fabian Scherschel Brewster Malevich

@brews If 95% of all computers on the planet use system A, you need a DAMN GOOD reason to move to system B, don't you think?

      Wednesday, 10-Mar-10 13:01:31 UTC
    • Brewster Malevich Brewster Malevich Fabian Scherschel

@fabsh: Your not going to move to system B because the "close" button is in the same place on the windows.

      Wednesday, 10-Mar-10 13:03:53 UTC
    • Jeff Has Moved Jeff Has Moved Fabian Scherschel

@fabsh Fitts' law is the reason for the change, but even Apple doesn't follow it. If they did, the menu would be in the lower right.

      Wednesday, 10-Mar-10 13:06:36 UTC
    • Fabian Scherschel Fabian Scherschel Brewster Malevich

@brews That response doesn't make sense to me.

      Wednesday, 10-Mar-10 13:15:09 UTC
    • Fabian Scherschel Fabian Scherschel Jeff Has Moved

@gomerx I don't know this Fitts and I don't care for his laws either. It's stupid, even a blind pig could see that!

      Wednesday, 10-Mar-10 13:16:08 UTC
    • Jeff Has Moved Jeff Has Moved Fabian Scherschel

@fabsh Blind pigs don't do HIG testing. :) It's a strong argument though, that changing something people already know has a great cost.

      Wednesday, 10-Mar-10 13:18:33 UTC
    • Matt Copperwaite Matt Copperwaite Fabian Scherschel

@fabsh agreed, it looks to me like Ivanka was looking for feedback, when I think she should have explained the decision.

      Wednesday, 10-Mar-10 13:20:44 UTC
    • Fabian Scherschel Fabian Scherschel Jeff Has Moved

@gomerx Especially when you are changing to something that is obviously a bad idea...

      Wednesday, 10-Mar-10 13:20:47 UTC
    • Fabian Scherschel Fabian Scherschel Matt Copperwaite

@yamatt Maybe they will revert it. That would be good.

      Wednesday, 10-Mar-10 13:22:11 UTC
    • Brewster Malevich Brewster Malevich Fabian Scherschel

@fabsh: Win XP People arn't going to say: "I'm moving to Ubuntu because their windows have the same 'close' button."
