@stav Not a big fan of the iPad?
-
@stav Just out of curiosity, what was the last Apple hardware you've had? I couldn't imagine using much else for audio work.
-
@xopher I was visiting Infinte Loop for a biz meeting once & bought an Apple t-shirt from their store. That's it.
-
@stav Then what is is that you don't like about their hardware? I've had tons of computers, my Apple machines generally lasted *way* longer.
-
@stav He just said his Apple machines have lasted much longer than other manufacturers' products. Clearly not "same performance."
-
@stav Also, Oprah totally loves Michael Buble.
-
@frankenspock it makes lots of economic sense to buy a product that is technologically obsolete in 4 years but lasts for 8.
-
@stav Didn't realize you were such an advocate for planned obsolescence. Got it.
-
@frankenspock ... and Chris Botti, too. But their CD's cost exactly the same as Britney Spears and Mary J. Blige. Go figure.
-
@stav I get that there's a ton of stuff you don't like, but you don't have to grouptag every sin…
-
@stav But their ticket prices cost three times as much as most of the people I listen to. Hmmm...
-
@openuniverse You are known by the company you keep ~ Aesop

@stav "Except when it makes me personally look bad" - Stav

@stav under the patriot act, doubly so!
-
@stav +1
-
@edythemighty You forgot to put !group #tag symbols in your overly long spammy post, buddy. :-)
-
@xopher Apple really has a knack for roping audio people in, don't they. Local huge music shop has basically an Apple Store. Never got that.
-
@edythemighty Meep. !Apple #sucks. ;)
-
@fabsh thats part of why I like to stick to small local record stores. And buy Vinyl. Unless we get the iDJ, I think i'm safe
-
@frankenspock I blame it all on Moore's Law.
-
@stav that everything wrong with this country is caused by stupid white men?
-
@frankenspock You can't afford the tickets because you keep buying that overpriced Apple hardware?
-
@openuniverse And yet I continue to publicly converse with @frankenspock. Taking a huge risk here.
-
@stav Why should my laptop be obsolete in four years? It's not like new ones make me significantly more productive than four years ago ;)
-
@misstech OK. OK. I'll turn it down a notch or two.
-
@stav i have a theory about that, but it's based on the repeated misconception that you're canadian. i k…
-
@rxp if anything less, because every couple years pc's make better televisions.
-
@fabsh cute Herr Fab, but I don't care about your opinions. I just get tired of seeing anyone us…
-
@openuniverse Do you mean Canadians are out of reach of the Patriot Act? Common misconception. NSA has global reach.
-
@fabsh Spend some time doing pro audio work and it will be obvious. Apple's cleaning up in video again too with Final Cut.
-
@stav I have confidence in the ability of programmers to soak up the extra power like it wasn't even there
-
@stav oh no, if anything it's much more damning to speak to infid- i mean unameric- i mean foreigners.
-
@edythemighty I don't care about you not caring. I use group tags like I want. Grow up and live with it.
-
@openuniverse You are a riot!!!
-
@stav I've seen dedicated audio/video stations that were far older than anyone would want for a PC, especially when daughter cards where hip
-
@stav i fear i may be a little cynical, even.
-
@xopher I don't believe that. I know quite a few audio people. They *all* use Windows. Haven't seen a Mac in a pro music studio yet.
-
@x1101 I was talking about a music equipment shop. A BIG one... ;)
-
@fabsh excuse me for wanting actual conversation. I see you're far below that.
-
@openuniverse You are funnier than a barrel of monk- er, simia- er, funny people.
-
@edythemighty Ziiiing! Ouch.... You're in form today.... :)
-
@stav i used to have a barrel of monks but the vatican made me give it back
-
@rxp With 2 year slope on Moore's law, a 4-YO laptop is 25% as useful as a new one. Ergo, software has to be 4x inefficient!
-
@openuniverse Why. Did you abuse them? nyuk nyuk nyuk
-
@stav only philosophically
-
@fabsh You couldn't have been to many pro studios, try Oceanway for example or the majority of major studios.
-
@edythemighty Is there an !edythemighty group here? I could start one if there isn't.
-
@stav you're not allowed to start any new groups unless all your old ones have been cleaned of seo gamers.
-
@stav There can be only one.
-
@xopher Well, I've seen Pro Tools run on way more Win machines than Macs. And I see no logical reason to use a Mac, to be honest...
-
@exador23 I can make you a co-admin and deputize you to zap any such gruesome villains?
-
@fabsh I'm not saying it's for everyone. However the audio industry in North America is very heavily Apple biased all things considered.
-
@stav Apparently you woke up on the "ad hominem" side of the bed this morning. Wake me when you've calmed down some.
-
@xopher OK. Might be the case. My point was I don't get why. I can actually see it for design stuff, they *do* make nice displays but music?
-
@stav after i clear out the massive # on #q and #philosophy. estimate: 8hrs of work on q. probably 2x …
-
@fabsh Probably because back in the day, the Mac had all the best audio software exclusively. Musicians learned the platform and now teach.
-
@fabsh I resent the “Email clients are very 2000s”. gnus is '90s or '80s, which makes it so great. works locally or remotely, X or not
-
@fabsh It's kind of traditional, and musicians tend to stick with the tools they know rather than branch out and try new things.
-
@fabsh ... and professional studio work is so expensive that paying a bit more for Macs makes practically no difference in the long run.
-
@xopher Hmmm. Good theory, that. :)
-
@lxoliva Oh god. If I wanted real pain, I'd use the fucking EmacsOS is what you're saying.... ;)
-
@frankenspock Yes. They also buy 50 channel mixers for mixing three piece rock bands. Morons.
-
@fabsh and seriously, as much as MacOS sucks (for many things, I'm not a fan), it's all cakes and candy compared to Windows.
-
@frankenspock That is exactly why this whole industry is dying and will be gone soon. People can produce the same quality at home *now*.
-
@xopher There is no inherent benefit for using apple for audio work. Its all marketing and I am sorry that you fell for it.
-
@xopher I dunno. I actually prefer Windows. I can't use MacOS. It drives me insane... But that's personal, I guess...
-
@fabsh a drums usually 12-15 channels. bass = 2. gtr = 1-5 overdubs,solo. vocals 1-6 overdubs, harmonies. each stereo fx = 2. 50 not enough!
-
@exador23 LOL. I gotta say, you can do it with a lot less....
-
@exador23 I know... it takes time. Whenever I want to exercise my zap finger, I clean out groups for a while.
-
@countess I'm sorry, how much pro audio work have you done exactly? The software I prefer is MacOS only, and is used by many film composers.
-
@fabsh if you want mono, or want it to sound like a crappy garage band, sure. you can record anything with one mic.
-
@fabsh That's cool. Everyone's got their own preferences. My main machine ins't a Mac either, but I have 6 within 10 feet of me.
-
@exador23 That's how Pavement started out. By the end they were using every studio tool available to them, of course.
-
@exador23 What's wrong with mono?
-
@fabsh I'm exactly the opposite. I don't love Macs, but they don't make me want to kill people, like Windows machines do.
-
@fabsh i like a good mono mix, but try selling it to the masses. musicians and engineers like to eat.
-
@xopher Wow. That's a lot of machines... ;)
-
@fabsh In the end it's just a tool, and people should probably use what they feel most comfortable with.
-
@fabsh rofl good point :)
-
@sleepynate I like mono and Mono. !LO is in mono. ;)
-
@exador23 Well, I know that Britney probably needs 200 channels to sound decent...
-
@exador23 "Nebraska" was recorded on a four track. And that's one of the gold standards of sound & tone to me. But I'm not the mass market.
-
@fabsh beck may have recorded midnight vultures in his house, but he came here to mix http://www.nrgrecording.com/
-
@frankenspock I was never one to go by the "ends justify the means" argument. But that's probably wasted on a Vulcan... ;)
-
@exador23 Well, it's not like you need a 50 channel mixer to mix a four track recording. Sure, you *can* use it but you don't *need* to...
-
@fabsh That's not the argument I was making, in any case.
-
@exador23 All I am saying is things are gonna change with a generation growing up listening to music on YouTube....
-
@fabsh when i worked with eddie kramer on the remix of jimi hendrix's woodstock performance we probably used 60 channels (7 tracks on tape)
-
@exador23 8 track 1 inch tape, but one channel dedicated to a sync track for the film.
-
@exador23 Hmmm... Well. Can't really judge that since it's not my kind of music. I probably wouldn't hear the difference.
-
@exador23 All the modern stuff on the radio sounds like crap to me. The more effects and dubs they use the worse it gets. Ie. Lady Gaga & Co
-
@fabsh i'm saying you don't understand the recording or mixing process. studios don't buy big consoles because they're big. $1mil for a neve
-
@exador23 I know I don't understand it. That doesn't change the fact that you don't need a Mac to run the software...
-
@exador23 ...nor the fact that especially the music industry tends to overdo *everything* they do.
-
@fabsh you do if you're a pro recording studio and want real clients to use your studio. i'm not talking about demo studios.
-
@fabsh you think Johnny Cash's american recordings were overdone? another NRG recording.
-
@exador23 FUCK Johnny Cash and his fancy pants studio wizards! Fabian Scherschel has recorded MANY well-regarded podcasts, friend! ;-)
-
@exador23 i'm not sad that it's harder to keep a professional recording studio running. i am sad that th…
-
@exador23 That were some good albums. :)
-
@frankenspock As long as you don't get it in a superslim it can't make you look like a hipster.
-
@frankenspock Zomg. Harry Potter was made in the 80s?! JK Rowling isn't going to be happy when everyone…
-
@ragnarokangel I could probably squeeze into a medium at this point.
-
@frankenspock I know the context. It's a logical fallacy and it's 2AM. Lemme have some fun.
-
@ragnarokangel Context is your friend.
-
@ragnarokangel And yes, you should absolutely watch Twin Peaks.
-
@ragnarokangel You're from...the....the future?!?
-
@frankenspock Niggah please. I am the future.
-
@ragnarokangel That terrifies me on so many levels.
-
@frankenspock As I rightly should.
-
@frankenspock @exador23 I'm curious as to your top American shows of all time.
-
@frankenspock I understand, take your time.
-
@ragnarokangel God, that's a hard question. Gimme some time to think about it.
-
@ragnarokangel St. Elsewhere, Homicide, Twilight Zone, Lost, The Bob Newhart Show, Six Feet Under, Deadwood would probably all make the list
-
@ragnarokangel Does SCTV count as US or Canadian?
-
@frankenspock Isn't SCTV technically canadian in origin?
-
@frankenspock I'm intrigued that you've listed Lost on there. I've been batting around the idea that I should try watching it...
-
@frankenspock he only said American. As far as I know the canucks are still American too.
-
@frankenspock No, I'm not talking about shows that ended up on American networks. I'm talking about American shows.
-
@ragnarokangel Yes, totally Canadian. However, it aired on NBC for a couple of years.
-
@edythemighty Oh give me a break and stop asking like you don't use "American" to mean "USAians".
-
@ragnarokangel That's why I asked. Technically though, SCTV didn't "end up" on US TV, NBC basically paid for seasons 4 & 5 of it.
-
@frankenspock you guys are all the same to me. I'm Caribbean. We have crap tv, but at least we have better women.
-
@frankenspock Hmm... This does bring up an interesting problem. Let's go with country defined by 1st se…
-
@edythemighty Hey, insult our TV all you want, but tread lightly when it comes to our ladies.
-
@ragnarokangel Right, like X-Files for the first few seasons.
-
@ragnarokangel If you're going to watch Lost, lock yourself in a room and start from the very beginning...
-
@frankenspock That's actually how I watch most of my TV -- I wrote a blog post on this idea.
-
@ragnarokangel It's so complicated and dense that people get frustrated from week to week because they forget what's happening.
-
@frankenspock I burned through a lot of shows in a single or maybe 2-3 sittings.
-
@frankenspock I really like dense shows. This sounds very promising.
-
@ragnarokangel Thing to keep in mind about Lost is that whatever you think is happening is probably not actually happening.
-
@frankenspock If you think that what you think is happening isn't happening, is it actually happening?
-
@ragnarokangel Or is happening in some HOLY BATFUCK APESHIT WHAT JUST HAPPENED THERE sort of way.
-
@frankenspock Excellent. I hear there was something about a polar bear that just sort of disappeared somewhere in... season 2?
-
@rxp If the Pope falls down in the woods, does he make a sound?
-
@frankenspock i thought the pope was supposed to be infallible.
-
@exador23 ITYM "inflatable".
-
@ragnarokangel Yeah. Polar bear. Don't want to spoil too much, but lots of stuff turns up, er, out of place.
-
@frankenspock Like screenwriting, for example.
-
@joshix you popped on right when i need to call it a night. hope you've been doing well, stranger.
-
@exador23 Swimmingly. Yourself?
-
@joshix good, but wiped out.
-
@joshix I've missed you, too.
