The Wrong #rPath to #Microsoft http://ur1.ca/zx9y assisting the company which openly attacks GNU/Linux, on which rPath’s business is based

@schestowitz will the every be a day where we don't cry foul with MS? Pointing blame at them constantly isn't a win for anyone but them

@nixternal: if the playing field was level i'd agree with you. trying to pretend it is doesnt do any good either.

@dantalizing MS beat everyone to the punch, we don't need a level playing field to succeed, we just need less whiney people and more doers

@nixternal I don't consider that to be whining. It's rational.

@nixternal when people ask in !ubuntu IRC "why does Lucid suck?" I started telling them because we need more alpha testers and more fixers

@maco Don't you guys get plenty of Alpha testers? I used to submit bug reports on all kinds of applications all through the pre-releases.

      Monday, 10-May-10 01:01:17 UTC
    • Mackenzie Mackenzie Sean Tilley

@deadsuperhero no, just beta testers. commonly we ask people to test things in alpha 2 or so and are told "no, i'll wait til (beta|final)"

@maco i tell them the same reason they suck! don't want it to suck, contribute or stfu! i am tired of little ass whiners

    • Mackenzie Mackenzie Sean Tilley

@deadsuperhero of course, beta is only 3 weeks out from final, so by that point only critical bugs are being fixed

@schestowitz: Agreed, I for one moved to !gnu !linux because it was cheaper and had better software (SuSE Linux). I was clueless about !fsf.

Microsoft's predatory behaviour is the reason people start to dislike them and the quality of their overpriced software is horrible...

@maco don't forget to mention that rushing "fixes" during the betas causes a lot of the regressions

@maco Install CD detects an existing ext3 partition, told to make it ext4 with 'format' unchecked, without warning, formats it. [bug|not]?

@rusty I would have preferred to 'upgrade' the system but the Upgrade tool couldn't get through the firewall.

      Monday, 10-May-10 02:13:05 UTC
    • Jay Curry Jay Curry Jay Curry

@rusty Upgrades to web don't include maintining PHP? Upgrade to Jabber doesn't maintain _any_ config?

      Monday, 10-May-10 02:14:03 UTC
    • Jay Curry Jay Curry Jay Curry

@rusty The machine that can't get through the corporate firewall for an Upgrade was in a place where I didn't have a test device available.

@nixternal ms didnt get where they are by beating everyone to the punch. they got there by lying, cheating, and stealing.

@nixternal i agree its time to move on but lets not start with the revisionist history

      Monday, 10-May-10 02:35:33 UTC
    • Rich Johnson Rich Johnson dan trevino

@dantalizing show me a successful company that hasn't lied, cheated. or stolen something, and I will call bullshit ASAP.

      Monday, 10-May-10 02:48:53 UTC
    • dan trevino dan trevino Rich Johnson

@nixternal: but your original argument wasn't that people shouldnt complain because all companies lies steal and cheat.

      Monday, 10-May-10 04:16:52 UTC
    • dan trevino dan trevino Rich Johnson

@nixternal: and by that logic you should quit complaining about people whining because everyone does it.

      Monday, 10-May-10 04:17:19 UTC
    • Rich Johnson Rich Johnson dan trevino

@dantalizing don't get where my logic about previous cheaters and what not prevents me from complaining. Anyways, see this is going nowhere

    • Mackenzie Mackenzie Jay Curry

@rusty not bug. you told it to change the format. it had no choice. the only bug is that it let you toggle the checkbox at all

      Monday, 10-May-10 13:42:53 UTC
    • Mackenzie Mackenzie Jay Curry

@rusty also, not "without warning" the confirmation page DOES tell you in this situation that it will format

      Monday, 10-May-10 13:44:16 UTC
    • Jay Curry Jay Curry Mackenzie

@maco The 'bug' is in not advising the user that switching from ext3 to ext4 is not like changing from ext2 to ext3.

      Monday, 10-May-10 16:06:37 UTC
    • Jay Curry Jay Curry Mackenzie

@maco which was appropriate for one of the partitions because it had been tagged to be formatted.

      Monday, 10-May-10 16:07:44 UTC
    • Mackenzie Mackenzie Jay Curry

@rusty but it lists which partitions will be formatted, doesn't it?

      Monday, 10-May-10 16:52:22 UTC
    • Jay Curry Jay Curry Mackenzie

@maco It's been over a week since it happened, and right now I don't recall. Mostly I'm mad at the release portion of update-manager.

      Monday, 10-May-10 18:38:23 UTC
    • Jay Curry Jay Curry Mackenzie

@maco & I'll admit that there are very likely many such situations that can't get fully tested. it was lts-lts.

      Monday, 10-May-10 18:41:43 UTC
    • Mackenzie Mackenzie Jay Curry

@rusty why did update-manager have anything at all to do with partitions?

      Monday, 10-May-10 18:45:47 UTC
    • Mackenzie Mackenzie Jay Curry

@rusty only a reinstall should have asked anything about formatting & partitions, i thought...

      Monday, 10-May-10 18:46:23 UTC
    • Jay Curry Jay Curry Mackenzie

@maco system is behind a firewall. 'update-manager -d' launches a tool that does not use update-manager's proxy settings, and fails.

      Monday, 10-May-10 18:49:36 UTC
    • Jay Curry Jay Curry Mackenzie

@maco that failure means that the only alternative I had was a cd based install.

@maco: I have one lucid system that, every time grub-pc is upgraded, I get asked which partitions to install grub into.
