Abundance Obsoletes Peer Review, so Drop It - http://bit.ly/awhPab academics can stop paying this tax on their time #peerreview #abundance

@glynmoody ??? review before publish or review after publish, but peer review all the same?

      Monday, 14-Jun-10 12:51:06 UTC
    • Glyn Moody Glyn Moody drew Roberts

@zotz well, both: things like arXiv.org plus some of the PLoS experiments

      Monday, 14-Jun-10 12:54:29 UTC

@glynmoody misunderstanding perhaps? can't drop peer review if you want. can drop review before publish if you like.

@zotz I'm talking about the formal "peer review" process, not "peer review" in general...

      Monday, 14-Jun-10 12:59:55 UTC
    • drew Roberts drew Roberts

@glynmoody got that, but something may need to replace it other than a free for all otherwise everyone will pay with their own time.

@zotz I've tried to clarify this in the text: any better?

      Monday, 14-Jun-10 13:07:14 UTC
    • Glyn Moody Glyn Moody drew Roberts

@zotz sure; but I think that would evolve naturally - scientists would create what they need, not what they are told to use

      drew Roberts likes this.

@glynmoody Doesn't peer review pre-publication affect the quality - and perception - of the journals that employ it, though?

      Monday, 14-Jun-10 13:14:43 UTC
    • Glyn Moody Glyn Moody Dave Cridland

@dwd that presumes that journals are indispensable...(cf arXiv.org)

    • Glyn Moody Glyn Moody Dave Cridland

@dwd depends what you're trying to do: to get knowledge out, they're not; to get tenure, they are - but that's part of the problem

      Monday, 14-Jun-10 13:17:59 UTC
    • Dave Cridland Dave Cridland

@glynmoody They're a fairly (not completely) reliable method for filtering papers, too. A reputation broker, if you will.

    • Glyn Moody Glyn Moody Dave Cridland

@dwd yes, but an expensive one, and not necessarily the only one as other social nws indicate...

      Monday, 14-Jun-10 13:20:52 UTC
    • Dave Cridland Dave Cridland

@glynmoody I'm also a bit sceptical of how much self-publicity is required for a scientific "digg".

      Monday, 14-Jun-10 13:21:34 UTC
    • Dave Cridland Dave Cridland

@glynmoody Also, peer review is used for open standards, too.

      Monday, 14-Jun-10 13:22:07 UTC

@glynmoody sorry, can't say. only read the dent before. commented below the text though.

    • Glyn Moody Glyn Moody Dave Cridland

@dwd yes, that's a problem - but also human nature

      Monday, 14-Jun-10 13:44:46 UTC
    • Glyn Moody Glyn Moody Dave Cridland

@dwd I think there's a difference between the formal "peer review" of journals, and people looking at technical specs

      Monday, 14-Jun-10 13:45:11 UTC
    • Dave Cridland Dave Cridland

@glynmoody Gosh, I do hope not.

      Monday, 14-Jun-10 13:45:46 UTC
    • Dave Cridland Dave Cridland

@glynmoody I hope any of my proposals get serious scrutiny from my peers, at least.

      @dwd I do hope so.

      Monday, 14-Jun-10 13:46:22 UTC
    • Dave Cridland Dave Cridland Kevin Smith

@kev Well, put it this way, I'd rather my stupid ideas got shot down before publication. :-)

      Monday, 14-Jun-10 13:48:31 UTC
    • Kevin Smith Kevin Smith Dave Cridland

      @dwd And the good ones?

      Monday, 14-Jun-10 13:48:56 UTC
    • Dave Cridland Dave Cridland Kevin Smith

@kev That's the point, my (few) good ideas tend to survive the ravages of peer review, and usually end up better because of it.

      Monday, 14-Jun-10 14:08:20 UTC
    • Kevin Smith Kevin Smith Dave Cridland

@dwd Open review like this doesn't necessarily present the same experience as closed academic review.

      Monday, 14-Jun-10 14:10:00 UTC
    • Dave Cridland Dave Cridland Kevin Smith

@kev This I'll readily grant, indeed.
