@jzb Your "party of gno" article expresses exactly my feelings about the direction of the FSF campaigning right now. Great work.
-
@ovidius Thanks! Much appreciated. I should note, it was written before the ACTA campaign they're doing. No way to do that positively.
-
@jzb, maybe you could update the article to point out the !fsf ACTA campaign as a example of where negative campaigning is mandatory?

@bkuhn I don't usually update things after they go out... but I may leave a comment. I agree you can't do a positive campaign on ACTA.
-
@bkuhn bad link!
-
@bkuhn dead url on your last status
-
@jzb, BTW, !FSF lists its 12 current campaigns at ur1.ca/08d5s ,only 4 of which are negative. That's only 33% & at least 1 you agree must be

@bkuhn can't say anything bad about anything, it makes you unrea... i mean, "it's great to not EVER be …
-
@bkuhn ACTA is new, and most of the rest are passive. I haven't seen any active promotion of LibrePlanet or PlayOgg.
-
@jzb, PlayOgg was quite active about a year or so ago. LibrePlanet has an annual conference that's been running for years now!
-
@bkuhn Even "positive" campaigns are tinged in negativity. FreeBIOS page spends 1 graf bitching about free laptops from IBM, 1 about Intel.
-
@bkuhn Campaigning on legislation/policy is different than campaigning on products.
-
@jzb,FreeBIOS: you're digging to justify the position;Seems you're saying no FLOSS project should complain re:uncooperative hardware vendors
-
@jzb,I don't disagree, but if you hold that position, you're now complaining only about 2 campaigns among 12:16%. How's that "party of Gno"?
-
@bkuhn I'm saying it makes the FSF look like an ungrateful org to diss IBM for giving it hardware! Why can't the page just promote FreeBIOS?
-
@bkuhn It's not just the campaigns. It seems much of the communication out of FSF is preachy, negative, telling ppl what not to do/use.
-
@jzb, that's 1 paragraph in a whole essay. As I said, you're digging through & highlighting only the parts that support your position.
-
@jzb, I think in that statement, you're confusing the communication styles of some individuals with the actual message of the organization.
-
@bkuhn When those individuals speak for the organization, what's the difference?
-
@bkuhn You tend to be careful about when you speak for yourself, or FSF/SFLC/etc. Others not so much.
-
@bkuhn At any rate, judging by responses I've received, quite a few people have the same perception of the FSF. It might bear looking at.
-
@jzb,I'm careful in part b/c tech press has oft *ignored* clear instructions as to whom I speak for. Some don't know how seedy tech press is
-
@bkuhn "But public lambaste isn't constructive, though." <-- See? That was my point.
-
@jzb fullack to that
-
@jzb most I've seen complaining couldn't care less for people's software freedom and only wish to discuss technical merit. Not !fsf mission.
-
@jzb,last resort only. !fsf spent decades of positive work to end DRM & proprietary sw. How many decades did you try bf. going negative?

@bkuhn i havn't see jzb's negative campaign - just what he said in the last few minutes

@bkuhn I do share the goals, not the tactics. I find the tactics + preachiness embarrassing and harmful to reaching those goals.

@jzb ahh ok thx
-
@jzb, I appreciate that feedback. My point is: you're using a tactic !FSF reserves for only most nasty practices to get your message to us.

@bkuhn I don't expect you to agree with it, but I felt it needed to be said. I'm not making a campaign out of it. I do hope things change.
-
@jzb, I think when you're upset w/ a friend, it's best to do anything you can to convince them to change privately rather than publicly.
-
@bkuhn is there any chance at all saying something privately would have had any effect w/the current leadership?
-
@jzb, You can't know if something like that will work until you try. Obviously too late for that now. :) Been interesting discussion, though

@bkuhn That link http://ur1.ca/08cvwh is broken "Sorry, but that ur1 isn't in our database."

@bkuhn all this negativity from oss re: negativity from free software is just textbook rhetoric by now-…
