@bkuhn, iPhone 4 perhaps?
-
@bkuhn maybe the iPhone 4?
-
@maddingue, @warp, Oh. The prurient desires ppl seem to have for "brand new tech", #Apple products or otherwise, just seems plain #disturbing
-
@bkuhn their products are technically good, but Apple's true power is their mastering of marketing
-
@bkuhn I've seen some colleagues become heavy Apple consumers (from zero) in less than 2 years
-
@bkuhn Yes, Apple's latest shiny new jail, the iPhone 4, is available retail today.
-
@bkuhn I don't think that word means what you think it means. ;-)
-
@bkuhn Sure they do. They have different criteria than you. The lack of understanding/empathy for avg. users is a major problem for the FSF.
-
@jzb, I'm making an analogy w/ "prurient":ppl seem to have an insatiable lust for shiny new technology; it sometimes seems to blind judgment
-
@bkuhn that does seem to be the issue. And sadly the 'status' that goes along with #Apple products seems to contribute as well. #disturbing
-
@bkuhn "Blind judgment" assumes ppl are using the same criteria as you - and they're not.
-
@bkuhn if it wasn't the case, how could Electronics Arts sell a "new" version of their sport games each year? :)
-
@bkuhn i completely agree. my desktop machine is now 9 years old, still works fine with the latest distros
-
@jzb,I admit that I honestly don't see a legitimate criterion for "latest-greatest" on day of release. Only reasons: greed, lust, & jealousy
-
@bkuhn you forgot: drinking the Kool-Aid
-
@mase, Sadly,my desktop died at 9 years old, but my laptop is now 7 years old & I'll prob. upgrade in 1 yr to a model that's 5 years old. :)
-
@bkuhn Have you ever heard of this basic human function which is called "curiosity"? Just stop seeing only the negative side of things. :-)
-
@bkuhn curiosity, wonder, etc. As long as you have contempt for avg. users, you have no hope of reaching them.
-
@ovidius, curiosity is "why are these people standing in line" & "I'll go in the store & play w/ it w/out buying", not *must* *buy* *today*!
-
@bkuhn But what if *I* buy the newest thing, and then donate my perfectly good older thing to some charity, so that someone else can use it?
-
@bkuhn I'm disappointed to see you looking at it that way. Is there nothing you get excited about, and want as soon as available?
-
@jzb,I don't have contempt for them. I admit I feel sorry for them. Anyway, ppl standing in line on release day are NOT average, by defn.
-
@jzb I do not think they do not understand them. They willing choose to ignore them.
-
@bkuhn I'm still using a nokia 1100, but that's largely because of strong preference for phone that is not general-purpose computing device
-
@bkuhn This is Old Testament thinking. "Thou shalt not!" "Pleasure is bad!" St. Ignucious would be proud, I suppose... ;-)
-
@jzb, Not at my age. In my early 20s,I used to go to movies day they opened. But I grew up. I can wait & do. Patience + discipline is my way
-
@bkuhn but also pig-headed resistance for expensive new tech, as making do with the obsolete was a personal pride in my youth
-
@bkuhn "I feel sorry for them" is worse: You think you're better than those folks. This is why ppl think of FOSS advocates as arrogant.
-
@bkuhn Now who's being prurient? ;-)
-
@jzb, it's a feeling ("feeling sorry"),not a position. It's only arrogance if I allow feeling to control my actions, which I work hard not to
-
@bkuhn You're missing the point. The iPhone is about status. Staying at home having sex (usually) doesn't produce status. :)
-
@bkuhn dont lie, you wish they were at home writing #FreeSoftware
-
@jzb You're really stretching.
-
@gomerx, oh, that's true. But what if the people blogged about it after? Does that produce a status symbol? Anyway, I hate status symbols.
-
The day isn't far off when Apple produces the iCool. They'll only make 1000, it'll cost $1 million, and it makes you really cool.
-
@bkuhn when I have children I have every intention of trying to teach them to program in hopes that the surpass my (very poor) skills
-
@bkuhn Actually, I see children exposed to programming less, since modern os blend that away. Sugar labs is not widespread everywhere ...
-
@bkuhn OTOH, even a tiny bit of programming could make a big difference in peoples lives, e.g. scripting in the apps they use.
-
@bkuhn if they could get laid they wouldn't be standing in line
-
@lorddrachenblut I can just imagine the kind of love chain that would be. :-p
-
@bkuhn by waiting you sometimes miss the group experience
-
@lorddrachenblut, I question the value of a "group experience" when the experience is: "giving in to mass marketing product-buying culture"
-
@bkuhn "Sex instead of iPhones". I like it! I'm on board! :D
-
@bkuhn my best personal experience is horror movies. On release day they have packed showings and add to the fun for me with others reaction
-
@fabsh so the day you got your iPhone you couldn't get laid?
-
@lorddrachenblut You bed I did. But I don't use them now so I'm OK with it. ;)
-
@lorddrachenblut Or the internet exploding when Ubuntu does a release. Nobody really NEEDS the latest, it's just fun to be in the crowd.
-
@fabsh the wording of that makes it sound like your lady wears them as a necklace
-
@lorddrachenblut Typo involved. But you also have a very dirty mind, my friend....
-
@gomerx in that case if your using bittorent then it is practical to be a part of the crowd
-
@fabsh I have the kind of mind that has zoned the sewer as a swimming pool
