@phaer Why not just save the configuration files or put them in !git or !hg and have them always when you need them?

@vkolev: My emacs config files? I have them in git already. Just saying, that i spent to much time with !archlinux customisation.

@pradeep: It is in the default install and i worked fine after i entered my credentials. Whats your issue exactly?

@phaer nice nice, I found !ubuntu more integrated and less of a hassle when it came to major version updates

@omouse: That's the good thing with !ubuntu, right. The bad thing is, it's far more cluttered than my !archlinux was and a bit slower.

@pradeep: Maybe the !ubuntu forums can help you. Theres a list here: http://is.gd/dsEG8 . I've used http://is.gd/dsEJd and was quite happy.

@phaer maybe !chakra will be the better !archlinux soon

@phaer @pradeep Pino is nice and stable, my preferred one since i'm on e17, choqok is the best if you want a qt ui

      @fthieme: Maybe, but i can't stand #kde.

      Thursday, 15-Jul-10 07:26:30 UTC
    • Frank Thieme Frank Thieme

@phaer ok, thats a blocker. I actually love #Kontact, #Kopete. As #GNOME has no real equivalent to these, there is no sense in switching...

    • phaer phaer emacs , Frank Thieme

@fthieme: What's about #evolution and #pidgin?i don't really know about #, i use !emacs with wanderlust atm. But #pidgin is enough for me.

      Thursday, 15-Jul-10 07:38:04 UTC
    • Frank Thieme Frank Thieme

@phaer I use metacontacts in #kopete a lot, #pidgin is no replacement there... !emacs is a nice os, it lucks a decent editor, tough ;)

    • phaer phaer emacs , Frank Thieme

@fthieme: Did you try http://is.gd/dsG9A an editor in !emacs? ;)

      Thursday, 15-Jul-10 07:47:22 UTC
    • Frank Thieme Frank Thieme

@phaer yeah, but its not !VIM ;) I must admit I use !VIM not for everything anymore. Right now I write in !LyX

      Thursday, 15-Jul-10 07:57:11 UTC
    • phaer phaer emacs , Frank Thieme

@fthieme: I still use !vim for most sysadmin stuff. Did you try !emacs + auctex for #latex editing?

      Thursday, 15-Jul-10 08:02:01 UTC
    • Frank Thieme Frank Thieme

@phaer I did, but I'm getting lazy and I don't do that much !LaTeX stuff anymore. So !LyX is just easier - mostly...

@fthieme @phaer Better !archlinux? Is that possible? Arch is already perfect as it is.

@tioduke they plan to be a half-rolling release distribution: stable system, rolling packets on top... !chakra

@tioduke I didn't understand the original dent how can it be better when its based on !archlinux

@fthieme That actually sounds very sensible.

@mjjzf I find this very appealing, too. They are in alpha stage tough...

@dickturpin He would said "best !archlinux based distro" I tried it & it was easiest to install.but #kahelos respect the !arch "feelling".

    • Peter Cannon Peter Cannon Arch Linux , Thomas HOCEDEZ

@asthro Did you mean: "He should have said "best !archlinux based distro" I tried it & it was easiest to install"?

      Thursday, 15-Jul-10 13:41:21 UTC
    • Sergio Tridente Sergio Tridente Frank Thieme

@fthieme In my opinion, half rolling release will make for a nightmare to maintain (for the chakra devs)...

      Thursday, 15-Jul-10 13:49:52 UTC
    • Frank Thieme Frank Thieme Arch Linux , The Chakra Project , Peter Cannon

@dickturpin !chakra has its roots in !archlinux, but it is about to evolve over arch. So IMHO it has the potential to be better...

    • Frank Thieme Frank Thieme Sergio Tridente

@tioduke I don't know. Having a stable system below desktop/apps makes things easier I guess. At least easier than the KDEmod + arch model

      Thursday, 15-Jul-10 13:51:28 UTC
    • Sergio Tridente Sergio Tridente Frank Thieme

@fthieme ... Sticking always to the latest and greatest solves that problem, IMO.

@fthieme I've used it,, I like it but I prefer pure !archlinux

@fthieme What will happen when kde will demand for a newer graphic driver? I answer: they will have to update Xorg and maybe the kernel

      Thursday, 15-Jul-10 13:53:42 UTC
    • Sergio Tridente Sergio Tridente Frank Thieme

@fthieme ...Updating one particular application will involve selecting libraries to update which will involve updating other apps, and so on

      Thursday, 15-Jul-10 13:56:06 UTC
    • Sergio Tridente Sergio Tridente Frank Thieme

@fthieme So long for selecting which packages to upgrade. In the end, they will need to update everything.

      Thursday, 15-Jul-10 13:57:14 UTC
    • Frank Thieme Frank Thieme Sergio Tridente

@tioduke ever used a system like slackware? You can actually keep the system very long before any application demands something newer

@fthieme and they want update their base system ever 6 or 12 months - fast enough I guess...

@tioduke and they want update their base system ever 6 or 12 months - fast enough I guess... But time will show...

    • Frank Thieme Frank Thieme Arch Linux , Sergio Tridente

@tioduke and I had an nearly unusable system for some days because an update of !archlinux without synchronized !KDEmod update..

      Thursday, 15-Jul-10 14:02:24 UTC
    • Sergio Tridente Sergio Tridente Frank Thieme

@fthieme Yes, but you don't HAVE to. That's the difference.

      Thursday, 15-Jul-10 14:03:13 UTC
    • Sergio Tridente Sergio Tridente Frank Thieme

@fthieme Which could have been avoided by paying more attention before updating. I am still using arch + kdemod and, even now, no problems.

      Thursday, 15-Jul-10 14:04:35 UTC
    • Saro Saro Arch Linux , Frank Thieme

@fthieme KDEmod was not supported by !archlinux dev.

      Thursday, 15-Jul-10 14:05:35 UTC
    • Sergio Tridente Sergio Tridente Frank Thieme

@fthieme One problem: many kde devs are arch users, which means kde is built with the latest and greatest in the mind (and PC) of the dev.

      Thursday, 15-Jul-10 14:06:36 UTC
    • Frank Thieme Frank Thieme Sergio Tridente

@tioduke I still use KDEmod + archlinux, too. But - and thats the problem with rolling release - how can you be careful before updating?

      Thursday, 15-Jul-10 14:07:41 UTC
    • Frank Thieme Frank Thieme Sergio Tridente

@tioduke as there are new updates all the time...

      @theshade14 @tioduke yeah I know, thats what I'm referring to http://is.gd/dsZQq

      Thursday, 15-Jul-10 14:10:39 UTC
    • phaer phaer Sergio Tridente

@tioduke: Its good, but it is not as reliable as it could be for non-developers/sysadmins.
