@bugabundo haha, that's why I say good for you :) 1GB of #RAM and 2GB or #swap here. !kde apps alone eat them
-
!ubuntu Just found this little gem:"I don't understand why Ubuntu has to be forked every time somebody wants to replace the window manager."
Raphaël Pinson likes this. -
@alvarocarroz: Use the net install (mini) disk. Then there *is* just one !ubuntu CD that lets you install any DE
-
@maco @alvarocarroz @wally there *is* just one !Ubuntu, and you *can* install whatever wm/desktop you like on it. But GNOME is the default.
-
@bugabundo: I think that illustrates my point.
-
@alvarocarroz what do you recommend them for KDE then?
-
@raphink: At this point, I really don't know. Will be moving there once I find an alternative.
-
@alvarocarroz my concern is that most alternatives to !kubuntu are #rpm distros, and I really like #deb packages
-
@maco & @crashsystems: Load 5 only once to cut out one insn. ;)
-
@maco & @crashsystems: And if your ALU doesn't have a mult. op., shift left by two and add...
-
@raphink: I'm currently considering: sabayon, arch or sidux.
-
@alvarocarroz I stuck to !kubuntu #hardy for some time, and I switched all my machines to !KDE 4 with #jaunty
-
@alvarocarroz it's really the upgrade to !kubuntu #intrepid that was a big mess
-
@alvarocarroz sabayon rules, it works &is great. arch is so tweakable, completely diff. couldn't work it. sidux is experimental&might break
-
@raphink: I really don't want to loose bluetooth, I modified this laptop to add it.
-
@alvarocarroz Ah yes, #bluetooth is one bad point... Still fighting with #knetworkmanager in #KDE 4, too !ubuntu
-
@alvarocarroz worrying about *who* or *what* "wins" is what is keeping FOSS behind. why can't we just make ONE awesome desktop? !ubuntu
-
@alvarocarroz: Kind of like !sidux does with debian sid.
-
@dobey it's not a matter of who wins, it's a matter of everyone using a desktop environment they like
-
@alvarocarroz that would be complicated...
-
@alvarocarroz I remember some problems we had with #cups in !ubuntu #dapper, which had been updated to beta and didn't work with !kde
-
@alvarocarroz I've never used anything newer than testing.
-
@alvarocarroz !sidux is !debian #unstable + some other pkgs right? Is it as stable as !ubuntu?
-
@raphink Well you are correct =)
-
@bugabundo sure, but we're not there yet, and I still rather not use !gnome dialogs...
-
@alvarocarroz the sabdfl insists that he personally spends $2m annually on kubuntu and kde: http://preview.tinyurl.com/askmark
-
@bugabundo #imap + #imapfilter where made for people like you ;)
-
@bugabundo yes, good tip but it would be kinda nice if they also took care of some encryption
-
@bugabundo you could at least filter them a bit ;)
-
@bugabundo: I don't like gnome or nautilus.
-
@raphink: I used it for some months, it was good & stable, but was also a lot of work.
-
@crimsun: Maybe he is, but the hired devs are not doing a very good job.
-
@crimsun: As for the volunteers, I'll say nothing. No pay, no obligations.
-
@jasonriedy: d'oh! of course, you can multiply a register against itself. i've been working on compilers, always need 2 reg in compilers.
-
@jasonriedy: aye, been there, done that. first asm I learned was a fake ISA called LC-3 that lacked mult. but i'm sure x86 has it.
-
@wally Because obviously ubuntu has to be canonical
-
@dobey Honestly You hardly see Linux Devs either. Linux Users however answer http://identi.ca/notice/3756006 & bring harmony a step closer
-
@bugabundo As I understand it most of the dev support is volunteer. Like a crazy percentage. Doesn't help the thrust of this discussion
-
@raphink Ha 700 Megs of RAM and 1 GB of Swap. Firefox is my sworn enemy
-
@skreech2 agreed
-
@skreech2 you must not know many linux devs. :)
-
@dobey Most linux devs argue over the desktop they use? Also another point is MS likely does argue a lot just behind closed doors
-
@dobey badly, as long i know. =(
-
@dobey He's welsh and my family name is welsh. Genes are funny things.
