@bugabundo haha, that's why I say good for you :) 1GB of #RAM and 2GB or #swap here. !kde apps alone eat them

!ubuntu Just found this little gem:"I don't understand why Ubuntu has to be forked every time somebody wants to replace the window manager."

@wally: Agree. There should be just one !ubuntu, then you can install whatever DE you want. You can even have a !kde edition, etc.

      Sunday, 17-May-09 19:14:05 UTC
    • Mackenzie Mackenzie Ubuntu users , Alvaro

@alvarocarroz: Use the net install (mini) disk. Then there *is* just one !ubuntu CD that lets you install any DE

      Sunday, 17-May-09 19:33:53 UTC
    • Rodney Dawes Rodney Dawes Ubuntu users , Mackenzie , wally , Alvaro

@maco @alvarocarroz @wally there *is* just one !Ubuntu, and you *can* install whatever wm/desktop you like on it. But GNOME is the default.

    • Alvaro Alvaro Ubuntu users , Kubuntu , Rodney Dawes

@dobey: No, you !kubuntu, #xubuntu, regular !ubuntu and now the LXED version. I say drop that. Make "editions" and stop favoring gnome.

      Sunday, 17-May-09 19:48:15 UTC
    • Raphaël Pinson Raphaël Pinson Ubuntu users , Rodney Dawes

@dobey @dobey actually, there is only one !ubuntu, repository speaking, the default pckgs on the CD make the diff, and it's good for newbs

      Sunday, 17-May-09 19:56:16 UTC
    • Raphaël Pinson Raphaël Pinson Ubuntu users , Mackenzie , Rodney Dawes

@dobey btw, I'm sure @maco knows there is only one !ubuntu ;)

      Sunday, 17-May-09 19:56:32 UTC
    • Alvaro Alvaro Ubuntu users , KDE

@bugabundo: All the other DE are second-class in !ubuntu. Which is why I'm considering other distros, which takes !kde seriously.

      Sunday, 17-May-09 19:59:04 UTC
    • Alvaro Alvaro Kubuntu

@bugabundo: Since #intrepid, bluetooth isn't working on !kubuntu. And the answer you get in the forums is just use the gnome app.

      Sunday, 17-May-09 20:03:52 UTC
    • Alvaro Alvaro

@bugabundo: I think that illustrates my point.

      Sunday, 17-May-09 20:04:43 UTC
    • Alvaro Alvaro Kubuntu

@bugabundo: !sabayon solved the problem by using kdebluetooth 3. The !kubuntu guys just couln'd care less, because gnome is all that counts.

      Sunday, 17-May-09 20:11:18 UTC
    • Alvaro Alvaro Ubuntu users , Kubuntu

@bugabundo: It's gotten to the point I can't recommend !kubuntu to my friends anymore. I tell them to use !ubuntu, or something else.

      Sunday, 17-May-09 20:12:24 UTC
    • Raphaël Pinson Raphaël Pinson Alvaro

@alvarocarroz what do you recommend them for KDE then?

      Sunday, 17-May-09 20:17:18 UTC
    • Alvaro Alvaro

@raphink: At this point, I really don't know. Will be moving there once I find an alternative.

      Sunday, 17-May-09 20:19:38 UTC
    • Raphaël Pinson Raphaël Pinson Alvaro

@alvarocarroz my concern is that most alternatives to !kubuntu are #rpm distros, and I really like #deb packages

      Sunday, 17-May-09 20:21:15 UTC
    • Jason Riedy Jason Riedy Mackenzie , Douglass Clem

@maco & @crashsystems: Load 5 only once to cut out one insn. ;)

      Sunday, 17-May-09 20:23:59 UTC
    • Alvaro Alvaro Kubuntu

@raphink: I think the same way, which is why I'm still sticking to !kubuntu #hardy

      Sunday, 17-May-09 20:24:38 UTC
    • Jason Riedy Jason Riedy Mackenzie , Douglass Clem

@maco & @crashsystems: And if your ALU doesn't have a mult. op., shift left by two and add...

      Sunday, 17-May-09 20:25:07 UTC
    • Alvaro Alvaro

@raphink: I'm currently considering: sabayon, arch or sidux.

      Sunday, 17-May-09 20:25:22 UTC
    • Alvaro Alvaro Ubuntu users

@raphink: I really don't want to let "them" win and switch to gnome !ubuntu

      Sunday, 17-May-09 20:26:06 UTC
    • Raphaël Pinson Raphaël Pinson KDE , Alvaro

@alvarocarroz I stuck to !kubuntu #hardy for some time, and I switched all my machines to !KDE 4 with #jaunty

      Sunday, 17-May-09 20:26:58 UTC
    • Raphaël Pinson Raphaël Pinson Alvaro

@alvarocarroz it's really the upgrade to !kubuntu #intrepid that was a big mess

      Sunday, 17-May-09 20:27:42 UTC
    • Dan Dart Dan Dart Alvaro

@alvarocarroz sabayon rules, it works &is great. arch is so tweakable, completely diff. couldn't work it. sidux is experimental&might break

      Sunday, 17-May-09 20:28:34 UTC
    • Alvaro Alvaro

@raphink: I really don't want to loose bluetooth, I modified this laptop to add it.

      Sunday, 17-May-09 20:29:40 UTC
    • Alvaro Alvaro sidux , Dan Dart

@dandart: Yeah, I've used !sidux before. It was good, but was also a lot of work.

      Sunday, 17-May-09 20:31:32 UTC
    • Raphaël Pinson Raphaël Pinson Ubuntu users , Alvaro

@alvarocarroz Ah yes, #bluetooth is one bad point... Still fighting with #knetworkmanager in #KDE 4, too !ubuntu

      Sunday, 17-May-09 20:32:44 UTC
    • Alvaro Alvaro Ubuntu users , Kubuntu

@raphink: I think the !kubuntu group should have a repo of their own, to fix things !ubuntu messes up when they update for gnome.

      Sunday, 17-May-09 20:36:56 UTC
    • Rodney Dawes Rodney Dawes Ubuntu users , Alvaro

@alvarocarroz worrying about *who* or *what* "wins" is what is keeping FOSS behind. why can't we just make ONE awesome desktop? !ubuntu

      Sunday, 17-May-09 20:37:14 UTC
    • Alvaro Alvaro sidux , Alvaro

@alvarocarroz: Kind of like !sidux does with debian sid.

      Sunday, 17-May-09 20:37:31 UTC
    • Raphaël Pinson Raphaël Pinson KDE , Rodney Dawes

@dobey because !gnome and !kde are different approaches to the desktop, which fit different users. I like !kde, others like !gnome

@dobey: Because different people have different ideas of what an "awesome desktop" is supposed to be. !Ubuntu

@dobey it's not a matter of who wins, it's a matter of everyone using a desktop environment they like

      Sunday, 17-May-09 20:40:45 UTC
    • Raphaël Pinson Raphaël Pinson Alvaro

      @alvarocarroz that would be complicated...

      Sunday, 17-May-09 20:41:59 UTC

@alvarocarroz I remember some problems we had with #cups in !ubuntu #dapper, which had been updated to beta and didn't work with !kde

      Sunday, 17-May-09 20:42:07 UTC
    • Dan Dart Dan Dart Alvaro

@alvarocarroz I've never used anything newer than testing.

      Sunday, 17-May-09 20:42:55 UTC
    • Alvaro Alvaro sidux

@raphink: but doable, the !sidux guys do it.

      Sunday, 17-May-09 20:43:02 UTC
    • Raphaël Pinson Raphaël Pinson Ubuntu users , Debian , Alvaro

@alvarocarroz !sidux is !debian #unstable + some other pkgs right? Is it as stable as !ubuntu?

      Sunday, 17-May-09 20:44:09 UTC
    • Raphaël Pinson Raphaël Pinson KDE

@bugabundo you can, but you lose the advantage of !kde integration, and you load twice as many libs. Good for you if you have enough RAM.

@raphink @deepmagic yes. and you don't see Microsoft quarrelling over what should be the default because one dev prefers litestep.

@jasonriedy: aye, been there, done that. first asm I learned was a fake ISA called LC-3 that lacked mult. but i'm sure x86 has it.
