@dantheman hahaha amazing sarcastic post

@pm It great isn't it? Someone pointed out that Hearts comes with XP so might not be the best choice, but the principal is spot on :)

@dantheman They took hearts out of vista I think, but are putting it back in with win7
-
@dantheman @fabsh You mentioned UbuntuOne in your last show. Did you know it's not opensourced? http://ur1.ca/4gmt
-
@magbeat Did you listen to me? The client is, the server isn't. I said so on the show. I have no problem with the server situation.
-
@magbeat as soon as someone implements p2p sharing in U1 it would be trivial to drop the server requirement and fork the client project
-
@johnhunt That must be why Win7 is "so much better than Vista" ha ha ;)
-
The really strange thing about Windows 7 @dantheman, apart form not working with my eth0, is that it's really not much faster than Vista.
-
@magbeat I do yeah. Like Launchpad it's proprietary, we talked about that and the naming controversy at length on last night's recording
-
@silner really? windows 7 is much faster than Vista was for me (64 bit that is). Boot time (for a windows os) is like a small miracle :D
-
@johnhunt: I like Wolfram, but not as general purpose SE and I don't think that's even what they're aiming for.
-
@silner I may be a cynic but for me Win7 is just an attempt to dump the Vista name that's burned them and keep almost the same product
-
@jackieplage: I was going to qualify that I have only tried it on P4.
-
@dantheman: yeah it's almost like a con. If I had to pay for it I'd be angry. I used to really hate Windows when I used it.
-
Editing audio and syncing the recordings from last night ready to send back to @fabsh !linuxoutlaws
-
@dantheman I disagree. From my VM testing, Windows 7 runs much better than Vista. No real new features but it does run much faster.
-
@jackieplage: the P4 was the only box where it recognised the Ethernet card so that was the only place I could try it really.
-
@silner Ouch, very strange. From what I hear it's generally quite good with drivers, better than vista was on release anyway
-
@fabsh @jackieplage I have no idea, that's why I said I'm a cynic. I've never run it, just like I've never run Vista. I have desire to :)
-
@dantheman I wouldn't either but I have to for gaming :(
-
@jackieplage: Will any games be improved by 7 though? They all use Open GL now don't they? Gamers I know are staying with XP.
-
@jackieplage Ah, I'm not a big gamer so luckily it's never been an issue for me. I can understand your position though
-
@dantheman @jackieplage: I'd be quite happy for Windows to be seen primarily as a gaming platform. But then I only play chess.
-
@silner 64 bit xp is rubbish so I've been using vista until win7 (I have 8gb RAM), and win7 uses much less resources
-
@silner Vista could be slow even with a quad core processor and 8gb RAM :D
-
@jackieplage 8gb of RAM wow :O That's a pretty impressive system, you must be a serious gamer :)
-
@jackieplage: like @dantheman, I don't really game so I don't need new windows. I'll keep one XP box for Flash 6 and DW 8 though.
-
@dantheman I like my MMORPG's, some of which demand quite high systems :)
-
@dantheman My system is mediocre compared to some of my fellow gamers, hehe
-
@jackieplage Really? Wow. I must be out of touch. My laptop has 2gb of RAM and I still think that's overkill for my needs
-
@jackieplage Even with audio editing and having 10 programs open at once I use about 5-600mb max. One of the reasons I love Linux :)
-
@dantheman only because you're not on vista :D (my friends install used 800mb of ram idling, no joke)
-
@dantheman As ever it depends on your needs. My imac also has 2gb and that's plenty for what I do on it
-
@faemir Yeah I've heard it's a resource hog but I'm pleased to say I've never installed it :)
-
@dantheman Oh, linux definitely helps. Ubuntu is running way better on my imac than OS X does :)
-
@dantheman @jackieplage: Audio really eats memory on Windows. This is one area where Linux is light years ahead.
-
@dantheman @jackieplage: In fairness not all distros are equal with audio. Suse is really slow with it.
-
@silner Not all distros are equal for anything really, it depends what you want. One thing I love is the option to sample as many as I like
-
@fabsh I'm Sorry, I missed that point. Must have been the at a critical traffic situation, because I listened to the show on my bike :)
-
@dantheman: I always feel churlish for saying this, but I really don't like Suse. I can't see what it is good at.
-
@silner It's great for office deployments which is what it's intended for. Integrates easily with Windows domains, it's a corporate desktop
-
@magbeat No, thanks for pointing it out. It's always good to know these things, we value listener input, fire away :)
-
@silner Suse is good at making even xcalc feel slow and sluggish.
-
@magbeat No worries. Don't crash! ;)
-
@dantheman Well, me testing it has nothing to do with desire, believe me...
-
@dantheman Someone told me their corporate support service was a lot cheaper than Redhat's?
-
@dantheman I agree that the move to Windows 7 is just an attempt to drop Vista. Much like the move away from ME for those that remember.
-
@silner I have no idea about their support prices to be honest but it is their main focus. The enterprise where they want to be I think
-
@dantheman I had such a bad experience with Suse. I think it was only second distro I tried, but I couldn't get anything to work.
-
@dantheman I kept failing with Fedora at first, but then the light went on and I realised I had to understand Selinux.
-
@imag1narynumber yeah I definitely had issues, but as @dantheman says, I suppose it's not meant for the likes of us :)
