@hotmagz as long you're not #spam, i won't block and flag you. the minute you cross that line, you're gone. welcome to #identica. :)

@eightyeight those interfaces exist for years. the other way around would be more efficient and irc folks could also ban spammers better

@tobiasfar agreed. however, both the !irc and !xmpp protocols are open and federated. but, bringing them together would be nice

@eightyeight sure...however implementing it in an IRCd and not seeing it used at freenode or some other larger network would be kind of sad

@tobiasfar you know, it wouldn't surprise me if #oftc implemented it before !freenode

      Wednesday, 28-Jul-10 13:07:31 UTC
    • Tobias Markmann Tobias Markmann

      @eightyeight why that?

      Wednesday, 28-Jul-10 13:07:58 UTC
    • Aaron Toponce Aaron Toponce freenode Network , Tobias Markmann

@tobiasfar well, #oftc implemented #ssl, and the ability to authenticate with a key. how long did it take !freenode to get ssl and #sasl?

    • Tobias Markmann Tobias Markmann

@eightyeight i think having such XMPP MUC feature is more of a community feature than an actual implementation problem

      Wednesday, 28-Jul-10 13:11:20 UTC
    • Aaron Toponce Aaron Toponce Tobias Markmann

      @tobiasfar for sure

      Wednesday, 28-Jul-10 13:11:59 UTC
    • Aaron Toponce Aaron Toponce Tobias Markmann

@tobiasfar i'm just saying that if sucha feature becomes a common request, #oftc will likely implement it first. *shrug*

    • Tobias Markmann Tobias Markmann

@eightyeight yeah...however sadly most OSS projects are still on freenode

@tobiasfar to be fair, i contribute to #pdpc, and love !freenode. they're just the big, slow-moving behemoth of !irc networks

@eightyeight there are already xmpp-irc gateways

@bluszcz we're talking about joining an !irc channel through an !xmpp #muc using a #jabber client rather than an irc one

    • Aaron Toponce Aaron Toponce Rafał Zawadzki

@bluszcz close, but it should be implemented in the #ircd rather than force a transport on the user

      Wednesday, 28-Jul-10 13:25:45 UTC
    • Aaron Toponce Aaron Toponce XMPP and the XSF , Rafał Zawadzki

@bluszcz of course, that requires the user to run an !xmpp server too. it should be transparent for already existing 3rd party accounts

      Wednesday, 28-Jul-10 13:26:49 UTC
    • Rafał Zawadzki Rafał Zawadzki

@eightyeight well, and next implement <canvas> along with <video> because they are so cool now? ;)

      Wednesday, 28-Jul-10 13:28:04 UTC
    • Aaron Toponce Aaron Toponce Rafał Zawadzki

@bluszcz what are you talking about? btw- it appears that project hasn't been updated in 6 years

    • Tobias Markmann Tobias Markmann Rafał Zawadzki

@eightyeight @bluszcz ideally 1 IRC node in a net would play the gateway and connect to other IRC nodes and via S2S to other XMPP servers

      Wednesday, 28-Jul-10 13:29:04 UTC
    • Rafał Zawadzki Rafał Zawadzki

@eightyeight xmpp gateways have been created to allow such actions. implementing it in ircd is quite weird imVho :)

      Wednesday, 28-Jul-10 13:30:25 UTC
    • Aaron Toponce Aaron Toponce XMPP and the XSF , Internet Relay Chat , Rafał Zawadzki

@bluszcz but then it gives the capability of those who already have existing !xmpp accounts to connect to !irc w/o yet-another-client

@tobiasfar @blusczc full disclosure- i actually prefer !irssi to connect to both !irc and !xmpp via !bitlbee, which i'm using for !identica

      Wednesday, 28-Jul-10 13:33:15 UTC
    • Tobias Markmann Tobias Markmann Rafał Zawadzki

@bluszcz having the transport in the #ircd has a lot advantages: better identification, better access control, less latency, and so on

    • Freemor Freemor

@eightyeight have you considered a proxy between the XMPP client and server that would funnel data to/from irc...

      Wednesday, 28-Jul-10 13:34:56 UTC
    • Freemor Freemor

@eightyeight ... and would inject joined rooms into the roster

      Wednesday, 28-Jul-10 13:36:01 UTC
    • Aaron Toponce Aaron Toponce Freemor

@freemor no. we're just discussing a possible #ircd implementation. it's not a big deal, really
