Oracle's move is a huge test for OIN. They need a coherent response when one licensee attacks another over a Linux distro. #java

I agree w/ @webmink. I await #Bergelt's statement on how his company solves #Oracle #swpats problem. That's what #OIN promised for !Linux.

@rahulsundaram So what use are they? Their definition of "Linux System" is so out of date it excludes the major Linux innovator.
-
@webmink I did not defend OIN. Rather reinforcing the point that you cannot expect anything out of OIN in this case
-
@webmink Since your organization just became a licensee, perhaps you can push for Android and OpenJDK among other components
-
@rahulsundaram Already on the case ;-)
-
@webmink OIN's methodology has a number of other issues. Lack of transparency. Components tied to very specific version etc.
-
@webmink This is about their Java implementation Dalvik, so not really on the list of things they cover. (also see http://ur1.ca/14gz3 )
-
@nailuj Plese see http://identi.ca/notice/46060386
-
@webmink Google should've tried to get Dalvik covered as well... I agree their definition is too narrow though.
-
@webmink exactly, useless and deceptive! OIN Linux defn covers GNU/Linux (incl later versions), not just Linux, and not Android.
-
@nailuj The key omission is OpenJDK. Including that would have meant Oracle as a licensee conveyed all Java patents to OIN...
-
@webmink Yeah, it would be great to have openJDK on there.
-
@rahulsundaram, indeed & that really shows a serious limitation, doesn't it? #OIN should seek #swpats saftey for all !FaiF sw, not just some.

@bkuhn Yes but unless we get OIN to change its process, we just cannot expect anything in this lawsuit. Not defending. Just explaining
-
@rahulsundaram,Agreed,but #OIN claims to be defenders against patent trolls that hurt FLOSS. What'll it do when its members are the trolls?
-
@bkuhn OIN's claim is broad reaching. However in reality its scope is limited
-
@bkuhn The problem is that for many devs it's not a choice on whether to file for patent. Publishing online as prior art will get you fired.
-
I typoed #Oracle in my blog as "Orcale". Subconsciously, I must think Oracle is merely "orc ale": merely a tasty treat for gluttonous orcs.
-
@bkuhn or possibly a nasty tasting ale, made from Orcs?
-
@bkuhn does this shift your position re Android/Linux best tradeoff for mobile FLOSS? 'course Meego a corp project, but not corplang dep.
-
@bkuhn nice post!
-
@bkuhn The problem with your argument is that the patents could apply to *any* language. Oracle or others could attack Python, Ruby, etc.
-
@jzb, I discussed this issue extensively in the blog post last year, which is linked to fom new one. Patents are more distributed & unplanned
-
@jzb You really think Oracle has any Ruby patents?
-
@bkuhn And maybe not very useful?
-
@bkuhn I just send you email about that thing we talked about, BTW. :)
-
@bkuhn Yeah, I get where you are coming from.
-
@bkuhn Link pls? I don't think "scattered" makes an enormous difference if $bigco decides to go on the warpath.
-
@jzb, ur1.ca/16bas Single troll'd've much work acquiring many relevant #swpats on community-developed language& they're less likely to exist
