     @rebugger: #ratpoison (and #stumpwm) are IMHO the only ones you can use out-of-the-box without learning at all (if you know GNU Screen).

     @rebugger: IMHO window tiling (resp. automatic fullscreen + stacking) is especially for small screens the best. I use ratpoison on my EeePC.
