Neal Walfield calls !GNU !Hurd a "Multi-server Operating System" this, of course, is incorrect. Hurd is a micro-kernel. http://is.gd/eNhnb
-
@jacobwb nope, he is correct ;-)
-
@bleakgadfly Actually, GNU Mach is a micro-kernel (only the very basic kernel functions) and GNU Hurd is a set of servers that run on top.
-
@bleakgadfly Both !GNU Mach and GNU !Hurd are useless by themselves. Actually quite useless put together as well without other GNU software.
-
@jacobwb you can port Hurd (set of servers) to another kernel, fpr example linux.
-
@anatolyka GNU Hurd's servers are already implemented in Linux, but this doesn't make any difference. Linux is also not an operating system.
-
@jacobwb, hm, yes, it's not OS
-
@stimpyjcat I guess is not, :) http://www.gnu.org/software/hurd/news.html
-
@jacobwb so said Linus: “a kernel by itself gets you nowhere [...] Most of the tools used with linux are GNU software” http://ur1.ca/uqvj
Osama Khalid likes this. -
@stimpyjcat watch Neal Walfield at http://www.gnu.org/ghm/2010/denhaag/
-
@jacobwb You're very confusing,GNU+Hurd would be an OS: GNU includes the "GNU Mach" microkernel and userspace, and Hurd are multiple servers
-
@bleakgadfly @stimpyjcat the problems is how you both understand "dead". Which criterias do you use for it?
-
@bleakgadfly If you want to see what happens in the !Hurd, just look at its website :) → http://hurd.gnu.org ⇒ monthly news.
-
@bleakgadfly @stimpyjcat the main problem of the hurd is lack of manpower and no more. Wish to feel it as not dead -give your own time to it
-
@bleakgadfly @stimpyjcat anything else is not "relative" for Hurd
-
@stimpyjcat hm, maybe my wording was wrong. Spreading correct info about Hurd via microblogging (or anything else) is a good job for Hurd
-
@bleakgadfly project Hurd has never declared an end of its development
-
@bleakgadfly glad to :)
-
@bleakgadfly port mach to it :-)
-
@bleakgadfly Pfft you can learn C and Assember in 24 hours if you have the right book!
-
@bleakgadfly that's cool!
-
@lmarcetic GNU+Hurd would be an OS, but this combination should be called just "GNU" as in GNU+Hurd+Mach=GNU OS. Just Hurd+Mach=micro-kernel
-
@jacobwb I thought Mach was the micro-kernel and Hurd the kernel built atop Mach. If so, Gnu+Hurd = GnuOS. I could be wrong, though.
-
@lnxwalt280 Read http://is.gd/eQDzC "GNU+Hurd" should only be used to be specific about which kernel is used, e.g. GNU+Linux or GNU+kFreeBSD
