How can I test my mic on !Linux? Want to check whether lack of voice in Skype is hardware or software related.
-
@chriswaterguy: If using ubuntu, look under applications>accessories>sound recorder.
-
@chriswaterguy: Or volume control applet > sounds preferences > input devices, and see if the bars move when you talk into mike.

@chriswaterguy skype options→don't let skype control audio settings, then exit skype, fix volume/input src, test in Audacity to make sure

@chriswaterguy ..at least that's what worked for me :) (make sure you test all the volume sliders if you have a complex sound card..)
-
@unhammer still not working, but I'll have another play with it tonight. (By src do you mean the master/mic/mic boost in vol control?)
-
@fieldse No, using !CrunchBang Statler. Can anyone suggest a good sound recorder for !Debian #Squeeze based distro?
-
@chriswaterguy Sound Recorder works for my integrated mic, but not skype or other software. Then again normal mic works.
-
@chriswaterguy audacity should do the work ;)
-
@chriswaterguy no, whether mic1 or line-in or whatever is the "capture source". But this is soundcard-dependent...
-
@chriswaterguy, you could try the GNOME Sound Recorder from the 'gnome-media' package, but it might drag down some unwanted deps.
-
@chriswaterguy audacity is a good audio recording and editing app, you'll need lamp to do mp3
-
@chriswaterguy Sorry, did typo, you'll need lame (not lamp) for mp3
-
@chriswaterguy Pop up a terminal (i.e., gnome-terminal, konsole, xterm) write: arecord -f dat sample.wav That's it!

@corenominal speaking of that, it will be nice to have a gst-properties package without the need of gnome-media :/
-
@chriswaterguy recorder for audio streams? VLC does this plus some others; banshee-extension-streamrecorder. HTH
-
@unhammer Ah, not sure how to do that... will need to dig, I guess.
-
@chriswaterguy if using alsa, you could try the command "alsamixer", then F4 to fiddle with Capture settings
-
@chriswaterguy Try sound-recorder, and check the audio settings, maybe it's muted

@chriswaterguy get pavumeter and/or pavucontrol. They'll be in the sound menu once you install
-
@chriswaterguy: Cheap solution, but VLC is the end-all answer for any sound/video/recording/streaming/transcoding need -ever-. #vlc=the BEST
-
@chriswaterguy: Oh, it's the ultimate transcoder/recorder, just most don't know about it. If you master VLC, you've got some major skills.
