Still curious... When was the last time journalists were arrested in the U.S. while covering the news? Is there even another example??

@exador23 At every protest for the past 60 years, journalists have been arrested.

@exador23 Actually, come to think of it, just a few months back there was a critical mass ride where people got arrested for taping cops.

@exador23 What are your criteria for "journalist"? Josh Wolf would probably say 2006. I suspect there are other in recent SF history.

@t3knomanser the critical mass journalists are one & the same - I-Witness video. Is there a source for the 60 years bit? I am curious.

@kshep thanks for Josh Wolf bit. criteria: credentials clearly on display, video or photography. i.e. clearly in the act of documenting.

@exador23 I'm just used to seeing journos get arrested. The idea is "we can sort them all out later, but at least we broke up the protest".

@t3knomanser I'm trying to nail down when that change in philosophy happened.

@exador23 I'd say it's been a gradual change as vidcams have become more prev. Now everybody with a cell phone and blog is a "journalist"

      @kshep Is that a problem?

    • Ken Sheppardson Ken Sheppardson

@exador23 Team of reporter w/ corded mic and somebody with shoulder mounted cam was identifiable as a "journalist". No longer so.

@kshep But journalists don't have any special privilages that regular people don't have. Citizen and Journalist are the same words, IMO

@heygabe Only a problem when journalists participate in the events they'r covering, but stil demand to b treated as other than participants.

@heygabe mainstream journalists get access and credibility from rich people a lot faster.

@kshep That Journalists are non-participatory is a falacy.

@heygabe Explain that to the folks telling police "don't arrest me, I'm a journalist" and @exador23 ;-)

    • Gabe W Gabe W Jeramey Jannene

@jeramey As do other "Famous" citizens. And, I'd argue, Journaists often get _less_ access than standard citizens.

@heygabe @kshep are you suggesting that journalists covering war are the enemy?

      Monday, 08-Sep-08 18:20:27 UTC
    • Gabe W Gabe W

@exador23 What? Are you crazy? I'm saying that Journalism isn't anything special beyond the will and ability to publish.
