Anybody using hardware SATA RAID? Thinking about a PCI card controller. Wondering about !Linux compatibility.
-
@gomerx if you use hw raid and the controller dies, you need to find a compatible controller to recover your data. Consider that first...
-
@gomerx I got a spare 3Ware Raid1 card. You want it?
-
@gomerx Generally if you're not paying >$300 for a controller, mdadm (pure software raid) will be higher performance.
-
@gomerx, I always use software RAID on !Linux. Some argue it's slower, but you get more software freedom & the tools are consistent.

@bkuhn thanks, I may stick with software RAID. Speed is not my top priority.
-
@sazzer Appreciate your input. I think I'll stick with software RAID. Hardware doesn't seem worth the trouble.
-
@patdavila Hold on to it. I'm going to stick with software RAID for now. Might move to hardware when I need more performance.
-
@gomerx Unless you're getting an expensive battery-backed hardware RAID controller, stick to software RAID. Faster, fewer bugs, simpler
-
@tamasrepus Sounds good. I think that's what I'm going to do.
