Unfortunately I can see how folks will interpret this as sour grapes, but I for one am glad for the indictment of the two-party monopoly.

@mjgiarlo notably absent word from that speech "health" -- and he's a damn doctor too isn't he?

      Wednesday, 10-Sep-08 13:31:19 UTC
    • Ed Summers Ed Summers

@mjgiarlo imho the issue isn't so much what the party politicians say when they are running for office, it's what they do when they win

    • Ed Summers Ed Summers

@mjgiarlo but i agree in principle with the guy, i'll give you that ...

      Wednesday, 10-Sep-08 14:06:40 UTC
    • Michael J. Giarlo Michael J. Giarlo Ed Summers

@edsu He'd probably argue that the word "health" is also missing from the U.S. Constitution and so there's no basis for that federal service

@edsu I agree that actions are more important. But having only two viable options that are mostly the same is nicht so gut.

    • Ed Summers Ed Summers

@mjgiarlo that's just it, they're not mostly the same

      Wednesday, 10-Sep-08 14:09:19 UTC
    • Ed Summers Ed Summers

      @mjgiarlo the actions at least

      Wednesday, 10-Sep-08 14:09:29 UTC
    • Ed Summers Ed Summers

@mjgiarlo so do you think al gore (if he won in 2000) would've gone to war in Iraq?

      Wednesday, 10-Sep-08 14:10:03 UTC
    • Michael J. Giarlo Michael J. Giarlo Ed Summers

@edsu Perhaps not, but Dems -have- traditionally been the party of intervention: Wilson, FDR, LBJ, Clinton's adventures in the Balkans, etc.

      Wednesday, 10-Sep-08 14:14:34 UTC
    • Ed Summers Ed Summers

@mjgiarlo yeah, but see i don't have a problem with the adventures in the balkans

      Wednesday, 10-Sep-08 14:16:25 UTC
    • Ed Summers Ed Summers

@mjgiarlo do you really equate all those wars?

      Wednesday, 10-Sep-08 14:19:06 UTC
    • Michael J. Giarlo Michael J. Giarlo Ed Summers

@edsu I wonder if they weren't -all- huge mistakes, though the adventure in the Balkans hasn't come back to bite us badly (yet?).

      Wednesday, 10-Sep-08 14:28:58 UTC
    • Michael J. Giarlo Michael J. Giarlo Ed Summers

@edsu But the take-home point, for me, is that it's hard to look back and say Gore would have been much better given his party's tendencies.

@mjgiarlo i guess i live on a different planet than you, have you been asleep for the last 8 years? or have i?

@mjgiarlo whether the current administration are "real republicans" or not is beside the point -- it's what they call themselves

    • Ed Summers Ed Summers

@mjgiarlo ok i'll stop harassing you now :-)

    • Ed Summers Ed Summers

@mjgiarlo mostly because i'm making no sense ... and am getting upset at the thought of gore doing roughly the same thing as bush

@mjgiarlo Wait, are you suggesting we shouldn't have gotten involved in WWII?

      Wednesday, 10-Sep-08 14:36:08 UTC
    • Michael J. Giarlo Michael J. Giarlo Ed Summers

@edsu Okay, Gore would have been better. :) The neo-cons are just that bad. And Bush's signing statements are a Constitutional nightmare.

@rsinger Hmm, we shouldn't have gotten involved in WWI. Because we did, and had a hand in creating the conditions that brought about WWII...

      Wednesday, 10-Sep-08 14:40:44 UTC
    • Michael J. Giarlo Michael J. Giarlo Ross Singer

@rsinger ...we were sort of already committed to WWII.

@mjgiarlo whew, thanks for that, i feel better now :-)
