I had a lengthy discussion yesterday on whether or not "Open Source" is "bad", as opposed to Free Software. Opinions? !linux !gnu !ubuntu
-
@pmctechblog saying “open source” loses the focus on freedom, so it can be twisted for unfree means far easier than “free software”.
-
@pmctechblog I hear proprietary software users mock #open_source and when I mention ethics or #freedom they shut up !gnu
-
@pmctechblog Open Source is the means; Free Software is the aim.

@pmctechblog I think that #open_source is "bad" because it legitimizes proprietary software by providing a hint of morality !gnu
-
@rysiek: I would agree, nor should the two be perceived as in opposition.
-
@politux: indeed, the two are far from in opposition in themselves.
-
@trashbird1240: #open_source is a dev model with focus on "bazaar" PM style vs the "cathedral" method, licensing choices range free or non.
-
The Game. I just lost it. -_-'
-
@brandonrunyon you're right, but that's not how the aforementioned mockers see it; yeah they're wrong, but that's the problem, right?
-
@brandonrunyon whether neophytes or critics know it's a devel process, they still see #open_source as having ethical overtones !gnu
-
@trashbird1240: my point is it's legitimate to use an OS dev model to manage your free software projects. #open_source is ethics agnostic.
-
@brandonrunyon I agree; I'd love it if my projects were #open_source (i.e. someone would help me out); some people just get the wrong idea
-
@trashbird1240: that's why they started calling it OS instead of FS, no one wanted to invest in that. Perhaps a different label would work?
-
@trashbird1240: Although you know OS and FS are totally different things... I like the term "Distributed Development Model" myself...
-
@brandonrunyon the wrong idea people get is that if they try to screw people and then make *some* source code available, it's okay
-
@brandonrunyon and some people just think proprietary software is automatically better and therefore scorn #open_source: weird!
-
@trashbird1240: I would argue that sometimes proprietary software plays a role in FS dev. !gnu team had nonfree software to write FS on.
-
@trashbird1240: a mixed license is never preferred, but still ethically superior to a closed dev. It's possible to achieve greater good w/PS
-
@brandonrunyon but that would be more by "accident" (i.e. "that's the world we have to write FS in") than by choice/design
-
@trashbird1240 The open source dev model is a great tactic for making more free software avail, it's just messy to conflate means and end.
-
@eximious I find software #freedom as a general agenda far more compelling than #open_source; freedom is a more appealing argument to me
-
@trashbird1240 I'm a free software advocate who likes to use words like "evil" and "bad" pretty sparingly, esp. re: tactics for common goals
-
@eximious I'm evil
-
@trashbird1240 I suppose knowing is half the battle :)
-
@eximious @trashbird1240 "evil" and "bad" like "abortion" and "god" and "gun" tend to evoke unhelpful responses even from our allies.
-
@alisonchaiken How else are we to talk about an ethical issue, especially when emphasizing that it is? !gnu #freedom
-
@trashbird1240 "Unethical" even is less combative than "evil" IMHO. @bkuhn has considered this in his blog but I cant find the link.
-
@trashbird1240: Simply say that keeping software from your neighbors is unethical... it's not exactly 'evil'. Satan's not in the computer...
-
@brandonrunyon I don't mean the software is evil, or even the people, but I think it's bad/wrong to mislead people; some people do that
-
@alisonchaiken You forgot "gay marriage" and "pillow case"
-
@pmctechblog it's a topic of douchebags still angry trying to make a moral difference of #OpenSource VS !softwarelibre
-
@pmctechblog Free Software is the ONLY right thing!! !linux libre !linuxlibre !gnu #freedom #gnewsense
-
RT @freetard: @pmctechblog Free Software is the ONLY right thing! // Never trust who tells there is "only" one truth: their truth. !gnu

@133mhz you forgot “to be a programmer *and* a decent person”. If you can be a decent slavemaster, you can be a decent unfree sw coder.
-
@133mhz I hope I can avoid that fate…
-
@133mhz actually I'm newly angry ;) The difference is whether you think ethics is important or not, not an absolute for all people
-
@arnebab @trashbird1240 that's not true, if you check the OSI definition of #OpenSource it's more clearly ethics defined than 4 freedoms.
-
@133mhz Is that true? If so is it the only truth? ;-)
-
@133mhz Sure, but most people who mock #opensource have never even heard of #osi, or the OSD
-
@robmyers there is no way one single person or community can't reach *the* true, just keep walking to reach her.
-
@trashbird1240 it's like "software freedom" definition, a debate without pointing people to the actual definitions won't go to a happy end
-
@trashbird1240 i would never try to cure an addiction with definitions or lectures, anyway ;)
-
@133mhz How can there be more than one?? There's only one true meaning of #freedom and that's !linuxlibre !!
