    Some think I confuse #Open_Core w/ #proprietary_relicensing. I don't actually;distinction just matters little. Blog at: http://ur1.ca/244dn

@bkuhn so what, people think your confusing one #disturbing thing with another #disturbing thing? Call a spade a spade both are #harmful

@x1101, yeah, that's my point. I think no one knows what #Open_Core is exactly, but whatever it is, it's clearly bad for software freedom.

@fontana, I know for an absolute fact #Larry_Wall intended ArtisticV1 to be !FaiF. In practice, it probably is, since it's full of holes.

@bkuhn Someone suggested yesterday we co-opt the term as #OpenKore as a new genre, CC Metal.

@fontana, it's one of these situations you often point to: we all know it should be !FaiF but it's impossible to say formally. Changing e.g.

@fontana, I changed the example to use #jQuery's license, which is a much, much newer example but not muddied w/ nearly-Free Software license

@bkuhn I have to admit that #Open_Core confuses me, too. What about #MySQL's dual-licensing? Is that open core?

      Tuesday, 19-Oct-10 18:43:12 UTC
    • Bradley M. Kuhn Bradley M. Kuhn Richard Fontana

@fontana, of course. #jQuery devs tell me they did it b/c GPL users had trouble understanding GPL compatibility. #Disturbing but that's why.

@fontana, I do disapprove of pointless disjunctions as a matter of elegance, but I didn't then contemplate #GPL compatibility'd baffle some.

@bkuhn That's a "point"? Good to know you're "protecting" us from companies "committed" to bad things no one can define. #FUDmuch?

    • David "Lefty" Schlesinger David "Lefty" Schlesinger

@bkuhn Perhaps because the definition of "GPL compatibility" has been poorly communicated, or arbitrarily defined...?

@bkuhn I don't think you're confused, just that #Open_Core is needless indirection in your argumentation.

@lnxwalt280 Given the use to which it has been put historically, probably not. But certain management wanted to head that way.

@bkuhn I'm not the only one who's pointed out that there's nothing behind your accusations. @mjasay and others have done the same.

@bkuhn In the recent EU discussions, it seems that #mixedmodel is becoming a term for #opencore | #proprietary_relicensing, maybe co-opt it?

@bkuhn Been following this. Not sure Canonical is in right or no, but pretty simple solution:don't like copyright assignment-don't contribute

@djotaku If enough people stop contributing-no more Ubuntu until they change their ways. Also, dent is annoying for comments..too few chars

    • Bradley M. Kuhn Bradley M. Kuhn Canonical Ltd. , Eric Mesa

@djotaku,if !Canonical refuses to respect devs' rights to use same license they do,then that's only option left;Hopefully won't come to that
