@colindean WOO HOO! So now you can waste all the freedom you have on !ubuntu on a non-free webapp!

@zelut I'm not the buzzkill, the non-free webapp is.

      @colindean Fuck facebook

@teddks you mean to tell me you don't use *anything* non-free?

      Wednesday, 24-Jun-09 04:02:36 UTC
    • Steven Rose Steven Rose Ubuntu users

@colindean so you can throw all your freedom !ubuntu gives you to one side just to use a non-free webapp? "WOO HOO" indeed.

@slackusr I why you might disagree with that persons view, but can you please leave the flame out of the !linux group? sorry...

@zelut Did I claim that? Or are you trying to make a straw man?

      Wednesday, 24-Jun-09 04:09:10 UTC

@dcostalis: I think most people here agreed with me, so I posted that (IMO) very good reply.

@steveyeu That's a bit harsh... Being able to use a widely-used app in !ubuntu is one of the greatest things about !linux.

@octaflop It isn't "harsh" at all. The point of the GNU/Linux (and !ubuntu) is to give the user freedom. Non-free apps defeat that.

@octaflop I do not deny that for one moment, for some using !linux is for the lack of proprietory software and its use of alternates !ubuntu

@slackusr Yes, I agree, the reply was good. I just didn't think "moron" was necessary and so on. The guy makes some good points.

@teddks: Usability is the only way that software libre has a chance of gaining widespread use.

@steveyeu: Exactly, I wouldn't expect many of my friends to adopt !ubuntu if they couldn't play !DVDs.

    • Alvaro Alvaro Daniel Costalis

@dcostalis: No, he did't. Maybe I should have just called him "mac fanboy"

      Wednesday, 24-Jun-09 04:20:22 UTC
    • Ted Smith Ted Smith Ubuntu users , Faris Chebib

@octaflop actually, you can't play dvd's with !ubuntu (and free software) in the US -- it's illegal. thank Joe Biden and the DMCA for that.

      Wednesday, 24-Jun-09 04:20:26 UTC
    • Ted Smith Ted Smith Faris Chebib

@octaflop sure, usability is important. That doesn't have anything to do with whether we should tolerate non-free software.

      Wednesday, 24-Jun-09 04:20:48 UTC

@teddks: Good thing I don't live in the US.

@teddks Freedom means being able to use free and non-free apps. Are you personally going to write better replacements? !ubuntu !linux

      Wednesday, 24-Jun-09 04:23:09 UTC
    • Steven Rose Steven Rose Ubuntu users , Faris Chebib

@octaflop So why adopt the principles of GNU/!Linux (or !Ubuntu) giving said user freedom. To then use non-free apps that totally defeat it.

@teddks We still do, mate. Arrrrr!

@octaflop So you are admitting to being a criminal? That's smart.

@slackusr I think he's right about some things, but I don't think that the "mac way" is the answer, by any means... for any problem.

      Wednesday, 24-Jun-09 04:25:57 UTC
    • Ted Smith Ted Smith Kenneth Godwin

@kennethgodwin If non-free software is involved, then neither is freedom. Availability of replacements doesn't change that.

@slackusr though, now that i read this reply again... i don't get the correlation between an iToy, and a home computer.

@dcostalis: Completely agree about the "mac way". I think this guy is more to the point http://is.gd/1bugo of the problems

@mknepher The OS can't be separated from the principles. check out the !ubuntu philosophy, for one: http://ur1.ca/66rq

@mknepher That is exactly what I do. I like using !ubuntu and other free apps when they get the job done and non-free when they don't.

@teddks It can be separate, that's the freedom part. Again, you're welcome to preach if you don't use *any* non-free youself. Otherwise...

@teddks you and I both have higher values than to interpret clever use of data as being criminal. :D

    • Ted Smith Ted Smith Faris Chebib

@octaflop Our values have nothing to do with it, what's illegal is illegal.

      Wednesday, 24-Jun-09 04:35:03 UTC
    • Faris Chebib Faris Chebib Steven Rose

@steveyeu I take it that many non-free apps will have free and better clones in the future.

@teddks I'm with @mknepher on this. That is the philosophy of some of the !ubuntu community, not everyone.

      Wednesday, 24-Jun-09 04:38:35 UTC
    • Kenneth Godwin Kenneth Godwin Ubuntu users , Ted Smith

@teddks I am using the dictionary definition of 'Freedom'. Freedom of !ubuntu users to choose non-free if it meets their needs better.

@teddks I don't think there is a community standard for free web apps yet. Even the Franklin Street Statement doesn't seem that definitive.

      Wednesday, 24-Jun-09 04:47:58 UTC
    • Ted Smith Ted Smith Steven Danna

@sdanna seems definitive to me, but I think we can agree facebook is a non-free network service.

@slackusr Thanks for that link on the "megafreeze" distros - except for enterprise, distros should be either rolling release or < 6 months.

      Wednesday, 24-Jun-09 05:00:49 UTC
    • Alvaro Alvaro Ubuntu users , Matt

@madalu: I think rolling releases wouldn't be practical for a distro like !ubuntu, in which new stuff is added between releases.
