Is XMPP a tool for OMB, or is it what OMB should be built upon. I think it's important.

@mterenzio I'd say the latter. µblogging != content publication.

@dustin but don't undermind persistance and search (aftersearch, not track)

@mterenzio First I'd ask... what's the difference between "microblogging" and "extensible messaging and presence"

    • Dustin Sallings Dustin Sallings

@mterenzio Those can both be provided by one or more subscribers.

@mterenzio @dustin i'll provide the counter-point, for small µblogging nodes http/OAuth is needed for its extreme simplicity, spurs adoption

@brianjesse That's assuming you need a site at all. xmpp @sallings.org is google, @jabber.org is xsf. @west.spy.net is a simple download.

@brianjesse but if it's a web site to you, then you're making the xmpp-outsource argument I was making at bearhugcamp. :)

@dustin technically correct but without web, difficult to attract microblog newbies, though IM did do okay ; )

@dustin I want to save all of my "followers" in my own database, and when they update their profile data, I want to receive their updates.

@brianjesse Sure. In XMPP this is the roster. It's got lots of profile fields, photos, lots of subchannels, pubsub, etc... It's quite rich.

@dustin it is, I agree, but the necessary interfaces are just not around to achieve it solely through XMPP YET (for most users)

    • Matthew Terenzio Matthew Terenzio Dustin Sallings

@dustin otherwise it would have sprung from XMPP

    • Dustin Sallings Dustin Sallings

@mterenzio Well, I think it's easier to take a feed of data and put an interface on it than to take an interface and turn it into a feed of

@mterenzio xmpp is pretty old, but nobody's even figured out what it is until like, this year...

@mterenzio What would've spring from XMPP? microblogging? You mean like http://www.xmpp.org/extensions/inbox/microblogging.html ?

@kshep number of users? wiseguy I know. fact is , I agree that XMPP will eclipse current µblogging practice, but it may take time. . .
