!ubuntu wanting to have seperate wallpapers on each screen (Jaunty, nVidia driver), is it possible?
Saturday, 27-Jun-09 03:58:24 UTC from web-
@bionicgeekgrrl I don't think you can do that easily. I just build the wallpaper by hand with GIMP so it covers both screens to taste.
-
@bionicgeekgrrl: on KDE, yes. Gnome? I don't know.
-
@kennethgodwin its a shame it can't be done easily :( in Windows, a util called UltraMon allows it. Need to find something similar for Linux
-
@slackusr yes I'm using GNOME. Never really got along with KDE
-
@bionicgeekgrrl It is Linux, I am sure you can find something if you look long enough. ;)
-
@kennethgodwin true :) preliminary looking hasn't found anything though so far. If both monitors were same res I'd not worry.
-
@bionicgeekgrrl: It's the opposite for me.
bigbrovar likes this. -

@bionicgeekgrrl I use a Virtual 3360 3360 as my 'screen' then just leak the unviewable portion blank. I've got a 1440x900 and a 1920x1200.
-
@kennethgodwin I currently have a 2048x1152 with a 1280x1024 next to it, set up as seperate screens with xinerama.
-
@bionicgeekgrrl I just did #xrandr and an edit to /etc/xorg.conf in #jaunty. A bit strange but I need to 'fix' my monitors every so often.
-
@kennethgodwin I'll have to have a look and see about hacking the xorg.conf, as the nvidia-settings app doesn't support xrandr only xinerama
-
@bionicgeekgrrl I still require the manual GIMP-made wallpaper for my backgrounds tho...so finding an app would be better for you.
-
@bionicgeekgrrl I haven't tried this but it may work with some editing: http://lotech.org/code/random_wallpaper.pl.html
-
@kennethgodwin that almost does the trick, it'd work perfectly if I didn't have mismatched resolutions.
-
@bionicgeekgrrl If you know perl that shouldn't be too hard to fix? If not, I need to change it for it to be usable for me too.
-
@kennethgodwin unfortunately I don't know perl.
-
@bionicgeekgrrl last I checked that wasn't possible in gnome, though might be some gconf hack to work it. I'll sly-ly plug kde here.
-
@sirpengi so I am finding. I used to use KDE, but prefer GNOME in some respects. I could switch to KDE and give it a try I spose though :)
-
@bionicgeekgrrl http://76.166.110.31/wallpaper.pl <- I tweaked it so it meets my needs. Let me know if it does you any good.
-
@kennethgodwin i will have a look and give that a try and see if it works for my needs too. thanks.
-
@kennethgodwin doesn't seem to work for me as I've a monitor with a resolution of 2048x1152, so no wallpapers match it.
-
@bionicgeekgrrl There is also the option of resizing the relevant wallpapers of course. Sorry it doesn't fit your needs.
-
@kennethgodwin thanks for that, will have a look. I think the problem is that the other monitor is 1280x1024, so all images end up that high
-
@bionicgeekgrrl It essentially goes to the top left and paints the wallpaper from there. Are your monitors uneven at the top?
-
@kennethgodwin thanks, my needs are just odd I guess ;) annoyingly KDE/XFCE can do this with ease!
-
@bionicgeekgrrl Heh. I'm happy with my modified perl script and gnome. ;)
-
@kennethgodwin glad it works for you :) how do you mean by uneven at the top?
-
@kennethgodwin they're both different aspect ratios is perhaps part of the problem (23" wide 16:9, 19" 4:3)
-
@bionicgeekgrrl http://76.166.110.31/testcase.png <- is what my monitors look like normally.
-
@bionicgeekgrrl Since monitors are rectangles, I assume they are top justified or left justified in that script since that is what I do.
-
@kennethgodwin they're both at the same height rougly if thats what you mean, one is slightly deeper than the other though (due to w/screen)
-
@bionicgeekgrrl 'Roughly' wouldn't count. The testcase.png is the actual background image for the configuration on my monitors.
-
@bionicgeekgrrl So unless they are exactly lined up at the top in a straight line one would be off if they were arranged horizontally.
-
@kennethgodwin http://www.geekgothgrrl.co.uk/output.jpg - thats what the background image it creates ends up like.
-
@bionicgeekgrrl So your big monitor is on the left and the small one on the right. What does it look like in use?
-
@kennethgodwin yes, 23" widescreen on left as primary, 19" 4:3 aspect on right. Can't get a photo as no batteries for camera to be found.
-
@bionicgeekgrrl Your Prt Scrn key doesn't work?
-
@kennethgodwin i don't have a Prt Scrn key, using a Mac keyboard as I use it with a KVM connected to my Mac.
-
@bionicgeekgrrl Ah. I wasn't expecting that. :P Applications -> Accessories -> Take Screenshot
-
@kennethgodwin do'h shoulda thought of that, must be getting tired! http://www.geekgothgrrl.co.uk/Screenshot.png
-
@bionicgeekgrrl I meant with the background visible. Although, I'm wondering if something else is wrong now...you have a black background.
-
@kennethgodwin http://www.geekgothgrrl.co.uk/Screenshot-1.png (should be there in a moment or two)
-
@bionicgeekgrrl Ah, I think your monitors are aligned to the bottom. :P I'll try to come up with a new setting I suppose.
-
@bionicgeekgrrl One question: Is the output screen size right? my @outputScreen = ('3328','1152');
-
@bionicgeekgrrl I updated it with some justification options which may, or may not help.
-
@bionicgeekgrrl http://76.166.110.31/wallpaper.pl <- forgot to add that. xD
-
@kennethgodwin do'h! had the output_screen set wrong. Set it to 3328 x 1152 and it works. Sill me had put 3328 x 2176!
-
@bionicgeekgrrl I am glad it works for you now. :)
-
@kennethgodwin thanks for your help! appreciated, now I just have to find suitable resolution images for each monitor.
-
@bionicgeekgrrl It is not a problem. I like helping people as long as I have the time.
-
@kennethgodwin do you mind if i pass the perl script on? as I've had friends comment on the original post i did on facebook about it.
-
@bionicgeekgrrl Go for it. Let me know if s/he has any trouble with it. Maybe I should put it up in the !ubuntu forums if people want it.
-
@kennethgodwin thanks, just polite to ask i think! Sure why not, there probably are people going 'but KDE does it!' ;)
-
@bionicgeekgrrl I did put in under GPL v3 so it is #Free software. Thank you for asking first tho.
