BHC follow-up time... Reality Check: When Twitter turns track and IM support back on, does network effect trump OSS and crush Identica?
-
@kshep: Probably. But that's mostly because I can't type 'follow username' into the xmpp gateway to identi.ca.
-
@kshep: When it comes to software-as-a-service, closed-source and open-source compete on merit, not morals.
-
@kshep only if they choose XMPP instead of some other service IMO
-
@kshep but if twitter provides xmpp feed, then couldn't we set up twiti.ca or some such as a transport?
-
@bear They supported multiple services before, including XMPP. Don't know why wouldn't return to that.
-
@jerub Would have to agree with you there. If I'm using a free service and never intend to install, why do I care about OSS?
-
@kshep money
-
@bear Please explain "money"
-
@tychoish Are you talking firehose XMPP feed or individual user XMPP support? Apples and oranges, IMHO.
-
@kshep but with ping.fm i can have both worlds ;)
-
@kshep with a business deal made with another service they offload the support to that service - XMPP they would have to support inhouse
-
@kshep they did both last time. and the API has a the "full" feed in it, and track sort of *is* firehose, so I'm betting they'll do both
-
@bear I'm not talking about firehose. I'm talking individual support for IM in the same way they support SMS.
-
@bugabundo: yup, I'm here too. I'm talking with the Asterisk guy to arrange a talk. Thanks for the blog link tip, fixed now :) Cheers.
