What are the key pros/cons of moving from !Identica to a single-user !StatusNet subdomain? Any pain points during migration? /cc @wiretapped
-
@maymaym The only major issue I can see there being is that every subscription you make would be a remote one, and SN doesn't yet have a ..
-
@maymaym .. remote sub API.
-
@maymaym So if you use a 3rd-party client, you'd have to drop back to the web interface everytime you wanted to subsribe to someone.
-
@maymaym On the other hand, if you already use just the web UI, it's really not an issue.
-
@maymaym As for advantages - you can set your own limit for notice length, and I'm sure there's other advantages, I just don't know them.
-
@psquid That'd be annoying but not a deal breaker. I did just find "mirror" feature using RSS/Atom. I might use that as a comfort buffer. :)
-
@maymaym Transferring your subs is biggest. You'll also lose ability to DM. Plus side, set own char limit, less likely to observe spammers.

@psquid the big issue for me and !sn cloud is it doesn't have xmpp support
-
@jimmorgan It doesn't? I'm pretty sure I've seen non-Identica instances with xmpp support. Maybe it's a plugin that has to be added?
-
@maymaym main advantage is you can liberate yourself from the 140 c limit and go unlimited if you want to :) Ah and you…
-
@maymaym pro: config options (css, max length, etc.) con: can only reply to things if they appeared in my timeline. (this might get fixed?)
-
@maymaym and I didn't actually migrate; I started on status.net and never posted on identica. (I do have an account to hold my name though;)
-
@maymaym another big pro is that if you ask nicely they can enable #twitterbridge (see my personal timeline). afaik they won't on identi.ca
-
@maymaym and another con is fragmented context: http://wiretapped.status.net/conversation/235524 vs http://identi.ca/conversation/60337615

@jimmorgan You can't load plugins on *.status.net instances? Daaaaaaamn.
-
@jimmorgan Pretty sure it has to be a self-hosted WP for plugins, so I guess *.status.net lacking the ability would make sense.
-
@wiretapped #TwitterBridge is easy to set up on self-hosted !StatusNet instance. So fuck it, I'm taking the plunge: http://status.maymay.net

@wiretapped (cc @maymaym) Maybe they will, btw. See the message from @evan. #TwitterBridge http://ur1.ca/2nvg2 http://ur1.ca/2nvg3
-
@lnxwalt and existing notices. There's a bug for 100% migration http://status.net/open-source/issues/2503
-
@wiretapped con annoying (just less so) for users of identi.ca too, will be more so as non-identi.ca SN sites grow faster than identi.ca...
-
@wiretapped ... I couldn't find a bug so just filed http://status.net/open-source/issues/2969
-
@wiretapped that's annoying too. props in advance :) for whoever fixes a tough one http://status.net/open-source/issues/2231
-
@mivael awesome! but, I don't think that means you'll be able to follow twitter users without a twitter account :( #twitterbridge needs one.
-
@mlinksva thanks! I'd been meaning to file something like that.
-
@wiretapped Why not? #Twitter feeds are open for the public, afaik. At least, I can easily read posts there without having twitter account.
-
@mivael to reply/retweet/interact on twitter (which #twitterbridge enables) you need an acct there; but also I think status.net won't poll…
-
@mivael … or rather they'll poll your acct's timeline, but polling each user you want to follow would be too expensive. (i might be wrong.)
-
@wiretapped All I really need is to follow my several friends at #twitter (to see their "tweets" here). No interactions is necessary.
