Trying to follow through on `contribute to !FreeCulture on #MLK Day', having the damndest time remembering correct !copyleft (ↄ) dates....
-
Still sorting thru sketchbooks etc., but have !myArt #postcards, !CC !copyleft for !FreeCulture—copy/remix/share/enjoy: http://ur1.ca/30im7
-
My !FreeCulture contribution for today, a bunch of !myArt from #high-school: http://www.hackerposse.com/~rozzin/gallery/hs-sketches/

@rozzin these are quite nice. Would you also allow usage under the !GPL ? This one looks great: http://is.gd/uEC1u6

@arnebab, I'll allow distribution with GPL'd code; though I'm not sure I actually need to say that explicitly. Let me know if it's a problem
-
@rozzin Many thanks! It needs to be explicit, else people can’t find your work when they search for GPL-usable material.
-
@rozzin I use GPL for images, because I also have SVGs which have a vaiable source form that need not be shared in case of CC-by-sa
-
@arnebab, I've been considering converting the !FoxtrotGPS logo from GPL to CC-By-SA specifically for that reason; but logos are adverts....
-
@rozzin why that? I think that the sources should always be available, so people are not only allowed to change but can actually do it
-
@arnebab, requiring the license be distributed along with all prints of a graphic is prohibitive for publishing in many non-digital media.
-
@rozzin that’s right, sadly. I solve it by having the whole project under GPL, and the GPL only has to be available -> Flyer
-
@rozzin !GPLv3-Flyer: http://1w6.org/releases/GPLv3-booklet.pdf — just print it doublesided. Source: http://is.gd/z9qitr
-
@arnebab, I want people to actually be able to use my work on #postcards.
-
@rozzin: !art has preparatory materials, which may function as source. But painting & sculpture are autographic, unlike allographic code...

@rozzin then you need an additional permission (GPL): “With additional permission to distribute the images without source and/or license”
-
@rozzin sadly in the case of SVG (and any other source format) the disconnect is quite big. Photoshop-file vs. png without layers
-
@arnebab, `findability' is a good point—thanks. Interestingly, that can actually feed into the #pragmatic angle on !FreeCulture, I think.

@rozzin jepp. Free licensing is great PR, because users reference you. And publicity is what artists need first of all to make money.

@rozzin re "forks might not be recombinable" indeed, incompatibility is #problematic I say must be fixed by 2050 so as to not disturb anyone
-
@arnebab, `modified !GPL for postcard !art' seems `just like !CC By-SA, except incompatible with the most popular !FreeCulture art license'☹
-
@rozzin there are differences. For example it is compatible with everything from wesnoth, for example these: http://is.gd/Tlfc2d
-
@rozzin also you could make the permission conditional: If including the license is unfeasible (TODO: define), it need not be included.
-
@rozzin for example: “The License Text may be replaced by a short reference if the image is accompanied by less than 10000 letters of text”
-
@arnebab, cf. http://ur1.ca/3qp12 for examples of legitimate `disconnect from source' per @robmyers' `autographic nature of !art' quip.
