http://ur1.ca/6y8s "Netscape will [...] position its servers and browser as a next-generation Internet-based operating system."

@evan true, yet Google has actual applications ready, not just a browser, plus the availability of broadband => same idea, better chances
-
@evan: LOL! Clever, subtle, sarcastic. Love it!
-
@evan Are you serious!? Netscape is back?
-
@harpsichord: afaik its an parameter in the busybox Makefile maybe make install?:)
-
@harpsichord No. Commenting on Google Chrome OS.
-
@mem I don't think it's a slam dunk.
-
@evan I don't think it's a good idea, period. Data should live where it's used, not on Google's servers.
-
@t3knomanser I disagree. Data "in the cloud" is really convenient. Question is whether multiple vendors or individuals can provide the svc.
-
@evan if you succeed with status.net it WILL be high-usage. ;)
-
@evan Convenient, but bad design. I should be able to plug a small appliance into my network and have the cloud in my house.
-
@t3knomanser I think it's better on someone else's server. I enjoy writing very juicy stories on GDocs, to entertain the Google employees.
-
@t3knomanser now your taking nonsense indoor clouds? just playing on teh methphor
-
@t3knomanser sure. it's all about choice.
-
@t3knomanser @evan The problem is that google, et al set up a false dichtomy between "cloud" and desktop, as if we all must scrap our OSs.
-
@madalu That's certainly part of it. But I also don't understand why Google, or anyone else, needs my data for me to get at it anywhere.
-
An alternative, @t3knomanser, would be to empower *all* people to be producers. Clearly, that is wrongthinking.
-
@t3knomanser They don't need it for you to access it. They want it to control you for fun and profit. #paranoia
-
@evan while i enjoy the idea, i think we should never use the "cloud" fully as there will always be privacy and control issues.
-
@evan Why is everything refered to as an "operating system" nowadays? I think I'll go load up my Opera 10 "operating system".
-
Before they would just call Linux the operating system. Now my browser or software stack is the "operating system". Whats the kernel? Liver?
-
@jasonriedy Everyone should be empowered to produce- AND host. Centralized makes sense for networked data, but personal data should be edged
-
@harpsichord Because it's such a nicely vague term it applies to almost anything. I'm expecting "desk calculator OS" any day now.
-
I disagree, @t3knomanser. All data should be networked *and* on the edge. ;) (And I was being sarcastic before.)
-
@jasonriedy Networked is fine. I'm talking about where it lives. It should live where it's used, not in some third party's drawer.
-
@jasonriedy Doubleplusungood, even!
-
@t3knomanser, youre agreeing with Google. All data should be used there, so of course its all going to live there...
-
@jasonriedy Sorry, should clarify- "networked data" as in "data that describes networks"- data that is meaningless as atoms.
-
@jasonriedy @t3knomanser I imagine a lot of folks here already have their own clouds in the form of git + a private server.
-
@jasonriedy Actually, Google won't let me in the front door. Some mix up, certainly, but I can't use data there.
-
But *you* only need to specify what you need done, @t3knomanser. And only from their menu. (BTW, were in violent agreement.)
-
@madalu I use WebDAV, but yes- same basic idea. It should be easier to do for all users.
-
Data about the network has a frightful amount of meaning in itself, @t3knomanser, and much can be derived from small samples.
-
@jasonriedy I agree, but data about connections is most useful whene you can connect it.
-
@t3knomanser Yeah. I should have included ssh in that list.
-
@harpsichord Microsoft envy. They were successful with an OS; now everyone wants an one.
-
@narc How is it vague? It was so specific before.
-
@harpsichord The term "OS" was never specific. It could mean "kernel", or "kernel + glue", or maybe a hypervisor, or BIOS, or...
-
I remember having a discussion about the "OS" term and its vagueness with @josh, I think.
