dear !lazyweb is VirtualBox still th way to go for a VM or is there a 'Libre VM' yet?

@gbraad but that's Linux-only, not a true alternative I'm afraid - I need it for Windows and Max OS X as well
-
@marjoleink in that case there is not much choice.
-
@marjoleink: I think virtualbox is still your best best. I'd have said #kvm as @gbraad did, but that's indeed linux only
-
@gbraad thanks anyway, I'll go with VirtualBox for now then - keeping an eye out for a 'Libre' X-platform version
-
@marjoleink VirtualBox OSE is GPLv2-licensed. Assez libre? Also, QEMU/KVM
-
@marjoleink: Use VirtualBox OSE.
-
@gdk OSE? what/where?
-
@gdk if that means compiling from source - I don't have a compiler. So that's out.
-
@gdk the 'about logo is fun though! http://www.virtualbox.org/about_1024px.png
-
@marjoleink OSE is standard in Ubuntu, Debian, ... don't know about Windows.
-
@gdk well, I'll remember that, but for Windows I just need the prebuilt exe
-
@marjoleink No, VirtualBox is GPL v2, the Extension Pack is not.
-
@gdk I have no choice since I cannot compile on Windows
-
@marjoleink: They changed it since v4. VB is GPL for all platforms, the Extension Pack is proprietary, The old v3 had an OSE and a non OSE.
-
@gdk oh, I see. Good to know, but I still don't have any choice, do I?
-
@marjoleink: VirtualBox 4 is GPL, as long as you don't use the Extension Pack, for all platforms.

The #virtualbox about splash is fun! http://www.virtualbox.org/about_1024px.png /via @marjoleink
